Though giant pandas may appear perfectly happy chewing bamboos, scientists recently discovered that they would rather have something sweeter. Scientists chose because the animals are herbivores (食草动物), which would mean that they would love sweets. However, the plant they choose, the bamboos, has a very sugar content and is therefore not considered sweet. Could this mean that pandas have their hobby for sweet things?
The pandas were given six kinds of sweet liquids that are found in fruits and vegetables. They were also given at the same time. In each of the taste tests, the animals the natural sweeter liquids and ignored the water . They ate up all the sweet liquids and the water was left untouched.
What was even more interesting is that when the scientists the water with five different man-made sweeteners, ones that humans find delicious, the pandas were not as . In these tests, they picked the water instead. The scientists believe that it could be either because pandas found them to be too or not sweet enough and that the mixture could not the pandas.
The scientists were not too by the results, since pandas in zoos have always shown a preference for treats like apples, sweet potatoes and even mooncakes. Scientists believe that the pandas may have once sweeter foods that were available in the lowland areas that they used to live in. But when human settlement in the lowland areas them to the bamboo forests in the mountains, they had no but to settle for the almost sugarless plants.

A euphemism (from the Greek words eu—well and pheme—speak) is a word or expression that is used when people want to find a polite or less direct way of talking about difficult or embarrassing topics like death or the bodily functions. Most people, for example, would find it very difficult to say in plain language that they have arranged for their sick old dog to be killed. They would soften the pain by saying "We had Ruby put down" or "We had Ruby put to sleep". Many people prefer to call someone plain than ugly, or cuddly rather than fat.
Euphemisms are an important part of every language, but it seems that English has an ever-growing number of them. The non-native speaker not only has to make sense of the euphemisms he hears, but he also has to learn which euphemisms are appropriate in any particular situation. He might be aware that his American friend needs to use the toilet when she asks where the bathroom (or restroom, or comfort station) is, but he is less likely to guess that his English friend has the same need when he says he has to see a man about a dog. He might have learned, for example, that "in the family way" is a euphemism for pregnant. If, however, he says to his boss, "Congratulations! I hear your wife is in the family way", he would be using an expression that is too familiar for the circumstances.
Schools are full of euphemisms. At Frankfurt International School, for example, the special lessons given to students who are having difficulties in their school subjects are called Study Center (in the middle school) and Academic Workshop (in the high school). Teachers rightly do not want to upset students or parents by being too frank or straight-forward, and usually choose a softer word or expression to convey the same message.
1.According to the passage, people use euphemisms in order to ________ .
A. make themselves understood
B. attract attention
C. avoid embarrassment
D. sound straightforward
2.A person who is described as plain and cuddly is in fact ________.
A. tall and handsome
B. ugly and fat
C. ugly but tall
D. pretty and slim
3.When an English lady says she has to see a man about a dog, she might want to ______.
A. go to the toilet
B. see a doctor about her dog
C. have her old dog killed
D. see a pregnant woman
4.The main purpose of Paragraph 2 is to ________ .
A. stress that euphemisms are an important part of every language
B. suggest non-native speakers use euphemisms as often as possible
C. inform readers that English has an ever-growing number of euphemisms
D. warn English learners to be careful about the meaning and use of euphemisms

Do you feel sad? Happy? Angry? You may think that the way you show these emotions is unique. Well, think again. Even the expression of the most personal feelings can be classified, according to Mind Reading, a DVD exhibiting every possible human emotion. 1.
In the mid 1800s, Darwin divided the emotions into six types—anger, fear, sadness, disgust, surprise and enjoyment.More complex expressions of emotion were probably learned and therefore more specific to each culture. But now it is believed that many more facial expressions are shared worldwide. 2. The Mind Reading DVD is a systematic visual record of these expressions.
The project was designed by a Cambridge professor. His research team first had to define an "emotion". 3. Using this definition, 412 emotion terms were identified and discussed, from "afraid" to "wanting".
Then each expression is acted out by six different actors."It was really clear when the actors had got it right," says Cathy Collis, who directed the DVD."Although they were given some direction, the actors were not told which facial muscles they should move. 4.
Someone who has tried to set such rules is the American, Professor Paul Ekman, who built database of how the face moves for every emotion. The face can make 43 distinct muscle movements.Ekman has also found that it may not be possible for people to reproduce them artificially. The most difficult expression to reproduce is the smile. It isn't only about stretching the lips, but tightening the tiny muscles around the eyes.5. If we learnt to recognize whether someone was using their eye muscle when they smiled, we would be able to distinguish true enjoyment from false.
A.It shows 412 distinct ways we feel.
B.These can be combined into more than 10,000 facial shapes.
C.These particular muscles are difficult to control, and few people can do it.
D.They decided that it was a mental state that could be introduced by "I feel" or "he looks "or "she sounds".
E.He said the expression of these feelings was universal and recognizable by anyone, from any culture.
F.It is as if they are programmed into the brains of "normal humans" wherever they are and whatever their races.
G.We thought of trying to describe each emotion, but it would have been almost impossible to make clear rules for this.

A long job search can affect your attitude, especially if you're out of a job. If it's taking you longer than expected to find a job, the following tips can help you concentrate and stay positive, as well as reducing your depression.
1.__________
When you no longer have a job to report for every day, you can easily lose motivation. Treat your job search like a regular job, with a daily "start" and "end" time. Following a set schedule will help you be more efficient and productive while you're out of a job.
2.__________
Avoid getting overwhelmed by breaking big goals into small manageable steps. Instead of trying to do everything at once, first put something ahead. If you're out of luck in your job search, take some time to rethink your goals and work out another job search plan.
3.__________
Make a list of all the things you like about yourself, including skills, characters, achievements and successes. Write down projects that you're proud of, situations where you excel and things you're good at. Review this list often to remind yourself of your strengths.
4.___________
Being out of a job can decrease your self-esteem and make you feel useless. However, volunteering can help you maintain a sense of value and purpose. Helping others can put you in a good mood. Volunteering can also provide career experience, social support and networking opportunities.
5.___________
You can't control how quickly a possible boss calls you back or whether or not he decides to hire you. Rather than wasting your energy and time on things that are out of your hands, turn your attention to things you can control during the time when you are out of a job, such as writing a great cover letter and resume to the company you want to work for, setting up meetings with your networking contacts and so on.
A.Do voluntary work
B.List your positives
C.Create a job search plan
D.Keep a regular daily routine
E.Break big goals into small ones
F.Concentrate on the things you can control
