Safety in thehighway is not totally out of hands. Here are four
ways we canprotect ourselves when we travel.
You are safer in a  large car. People in small cars are
injured more often and more severely than  people traveling in
large cars. Factories of small cars are strengthening their
products' safety, which helps. But the mix of large cars and
small cars on the road is the main reason of the problem.
Being thrown into glass and metal car parts, or being
thrown from the car, can really damage to you. That's why
safety belts should be worn. The safety belt's main purpose is
if your car has a sudden crash with another vehicle or
object, or if it rolls over. A belt can reduce the chance of fatal
injury by 45% and the chance of serious injury by 50%.
Air bags are important. More than half of all new cars sold
have air bags. Air bags provide protection in frontal ( 正面的)
crashes-the type of crash that kills the most drivers-
when they are also wearing safety belts. Most people are
demanding air bags in the cars they buy. But the protection
provided by air bags is limited in side or rear crashes; effective
as they are, they can't take the place of safety belts.
Drunk driving crashes are less likely to happen if you don't
drink. Drunk driving is the most serious problem. Many people
have realized that drunk driving can lead to death and injury,
prison time and other results. There are movements to
strengthen penalties ( 处罚) for drinking and driving.

    任务型阅读 (共10小题; 每小题1分,满分10分)

    请认真阅读下列短文,并根据短文的内容要点完成文章后的表格列单。

    注意:补全填空应符合语法和搭配要求,每格只填一个单词。

Even British People Can’t Speak English Properly

There are different regional accents across the UK, and a number of regions have several different dialects, that is, they have their own unique vocabulary and grammatical phrases. There were at least six different accents born to London the last time I counted.

Worse than that, it is not just where a person is born in the UK that decides their accent. For example, a language and its accents often vary across class or level of education. Another example is how language can differ among age groups in the UK. The words and pronunciations used by young people in the UK can be radically different compared with those used by adults.

    Yoof culture

The word ‘yoof’ is a slang spelling of ‘youth’. Some people consider ‘yoof’ to be a negative term, since its pronunciation is easier and lazier than ‘youth’. Other people see the term as positive, because it describes how young people are creating their own language, concepts and identity. When people find it difficult to understand their children, the children can say more things than without censorship(审查,检查) of their parents. In this way, young people are starting to find freedom, independence and self-expression. They are creating a ‘yoof culture’.

It is not possible to come up with a complete list of words used by yoof. By the time the list was completed, it would be out of date. New words come and go like fashions. However, a few features of the yoof style of language are as follows:

◆instead of saying something like ‘That’s good!’ or ‘I understand’, yoof will use a single adjective like ‘Safe!’, ‘Sorted!’, ‘Sound!’, ‘Cool!’ or ‘Wicked!’.

◆instead of ‘He then said no!’, yoof will say ‘She was like: no!’

◆Instead of ‘She’s attractive!’, yoof will say ‘She’s fine!’ or ‘She’s fit!’

◆Instead of ‘I don’t care!’, a yoof will say ‘Whatever!’.

    New social and political language

Certain groups of society feel threatened by ‘yoof culture’ or by the British working classes having more social freedom. As a result, a negative term now commonly used in the UK is ‘chav’. It is insult and is meant to describe someone who is uneducated and anti-social (e.g. ‘He’s a chav!’). A young person who wears a jacket with a hood(风帽,头巾) (after all, it rains a lot in the UK) is sometimes called a ‘hoodie’. It is a negative term and suggests that the young person is interested in committing crime.

    Where does that leave us?

Learners of English often feel that the best test of their English is how well they can talk to a native speaker. Yet learners should not worry about communicating with native speakers so much. Research conducted by the British Council shows that 94 per cent of the English spoken in the world today is spoken between non-native speakers of the language. In fact, when we think about ‘international English’, there is no such thing as native or non-native speakers. The UK no longer owns the English language.

    任务型阅读。根据短文内容,请从以下选项中选出符合各段意思的小标题,选项中有一项是多余选项。

    A.Be in a Good Mood
    B.Don’t Try to Multitask
    C.Don’t Break the Signal
    D.Stay Focused on the Road
    E. Keep Your Vehicle in Good Condition
    F. Drinking and Driving Has Fatal Consequences
    Traffic Safety Tips
If you are among those who think that traffic safety tips are something that need to be given to children and not adults, you are so very young. Being an adult, it is our responsibility to set a good example for others. Remember when you are driving a car with your teenaged son or daughter sitting next to you, he or she is watching you and observing how you drive. So make sure that you follow all the necessary traffic rules to set a good example. Some of the effective traffic safety tips are mentioned below.
    Put Your Seat Belt On
The first thing that you are supposed to do, and make sure that others in the car also do, is to put your seat belt on. In case there is a child in the car between the age of 4 and 8, a booster seat(儿童座椅)should be used as safety belts are not meant for small children and cannot protect them in case of accidents. Kids under the age of 12 should never sit on the front seat.
    1.________________
Do you drive, listen to music, eat your sandwich and speak on the phone all at the same time? If you do this, you are not displaying your super powers but allowing multiple things to distract you. Once you are driving, be it alone or with your friends and family, you are responsible for everyone
present in the car. So stop doing other things and focus on driving safe.
    2._________________
Teenagers and young adults especially, don’t realize the risks they are putting themselves into. Alcohol influences your mood and mind and may not give you the judgment and control that you need to have when driving safe. Even smoking should be avoided and drugs should not be consumed if you are planning to drive.
    3._________________
Driving under pressure with your mind occupied with issues at work or at home would easily allow you to distract your mind off the road leading to an accident. So make sure that you don’t let the things outside your car affect you when you are in the car. Sleep properly and stay relaxed before hitting the road.
    4._________________
Your emotions or impatience may make you break the signal at times. Or break the speed limit because you are getting late. Don’t do that! The consequences for that may actually be enough to separate you from your driver’s license on a permanent basis. Make sure you obey the traffic rules and guidelines and do all to be a responsible citizen.
    5. _________________
Last but not the least, keep your car in good condition. Make sure you are giving your car for servicing and maintenance on time. Make sure you always check your vehicle tires before hitting the road and don’t run out of gas!
So these were some of the main traffic safety tips that should be followed by one and all in order to stay safe and be an example for others. Remember, rules and regulations are made for your own benefit and safety. So make sure that you obey them. Take care and have a safe ride.

    五.任务型阅读(10分)

Could your cellphone give you cancer? Whether it could or not, some people are worrying about the possibility that phones, powerlines and wi-fi (路由器) could be responsible for a range of illnesses, from rashes to brain tumours.

For example, Camilla Rees, 48, a former investment banker in the US, moved out of her apartment in San Francisco because of the radiation coming from next door. Rees told the Los Angeles Times that when her neighbors moved in and installed a wi-fi router she lost her ability to think clearly. “I would wake up dizzy in the morning. I’d fall to the floor. I had to leave to escape that nightmare,” she said. Since then, she’s been on a campaign against low-level electromagnetic fields, or EMFs(低频电磁场).

And she’s not alone. Millions of people say they suffer from headaches, depression, nausea and rashes when they’re too close to cellphones or other sources of EMFs.

Although the World Health Organization has officially declared that EMFs seem to pose little threat, governments are still concerned. In fact, last April, the European Parliament called for countries to take steps to reduce exposure to EMFs. The city of San Francisco and the state of Maine are currently considering requiring cancer-warning labels on cellphones.

If these fears are reasonable, then perhaps we should all be worried about the amount of time we spend talking on our phones or plugging into wi-fi hotpots.

Some say there is evidence to support the growing anxieties. David Carpenter, a professor of environmental health sciences at the University at Albany, in New York, thinks there’s a greater than 95% chance that power lines can cause childhood leukemia. Also there’s a greater than 90% chance that cellphones can cause brain tumours.

But others believe these concerns are unreasonable paranoia (猜疑). Dr Martha Linet, the head of radiation epidemiology at the US National Cancer Institute, has looked at the same research as Carpenter but has reached a different conclusion. “I don’t support warning labels for cellphones,” said Linet. “We don't have the evidence that there’s much danger.”

Studies so far suggest a weak connection between EMFs and illness — so weak that it might not exist at all. A multinational investigation of cellphones and brain cancer, in 13 countries outside the US, has been underway for several years. It’s funded in part by the European Union, in part by a cellphone industry group.

According to Robert Park, a professor of physics at the University of Maryland in the US, the magnetic waves aren’t nearly powerful enough to break apart DNA, which is how known threats, such as UV rays and X-rays, cause cancer.

Perhaps it’s just psychological. Some experts find that the electro-sensitivity syndrome seems to be similar to chemical sensitivity syndrome, which is a condition that’s considered to be psychological.

Whether EMFs are harmful or not, a break in the countryside, without the cellphone, would probably be good for all of us.
