Chinese car makers have narrowed the quality gap with their foreign rivals in the world’s largest vehicle market to the smallest level in seven years, according to research.

But the improvements have not been enough to see an obvious drop in the market share for local car companies this year, raising questions about their ability to be global competitors.

The annual quality survey of China’s car market by J.D. Power, a Californian market research company, tracks the number of mechanical and design problems reported per 100 vehicles by more than 21,000 Chinese drivers.

It documented 131 problems per 100 domestic(国内的) vehicles, compared with 95 per 100 foreign vehicles. The 36-point gap was the narrowest in the study’s seven-year history. When China overtook the US as the world’s largest car maker in the 2009, the gap between domestic and foreign cars was 145 points. “It’s evidence to the improvements that domestic brands have been making,” said Geoff Broderick, head of J.D. Power’s operations. “By 2018 the domestic and the global brands will be equal in terms of quality.”

Despite the steady improvement in quality, local vehicle makers have been performing poorly this year. According to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, domestic brand’s share of the market for cars—not including SUVs—has fallen from about 25 percent to 20 percent.

“Chinese customers are very picky in the world because they have been trained to distrust products,” said Mr Broderick, citing scandals(丑闻) affecting baby milk powder and toys.

“They go into a situation expecting there could be quality issues, whereas in the West we trust the brands.

1.What was the gap between Chinese vehicles and foreign vehicles in 2016?

3.J.D. Power is ________.

A. a name of a company

B. a car maker

C. a head of an association

D. a milk brand

4.According to what Mr. Broderick said in the last two paragraphs, we can learn that ________.

A. Chinese car market will be optimistic as is expected

B. Chinese and western consumers have different attitudes to products

C. he doesn’t like Chinese customers because they don’t trust products

Children grow quickly, especially their feet, but many families cannot buy new shoes each time a child needs them. As a result, about 300 million children around the world go barefoot. Those children risk picking up diseases and parasites from the soil.

An American man may have a solution for those barefoot kids — a shoe that grows with the child. Kenton Lee is the creator of The Shoe That Grows. He explains how the shoe works and how it is able to last so long.

“It grows in three places: the front; it can also grow on the side with Velcro; and on the back with our buckle. It can last up to five years. The bottom is compressed rubber like tire rubber. The top is just high-quality leather.” The shoe comes in two sizes: small that fits children aged 4 to 9 and large for children aged 9 to 14.

Lee says he got the idea for the shoe while working as a volunteer in an orphanage in Kenya. “… and there was a little girl in a white dress walking next to me. And I just remember looking down and seeing how small her shoes were. They were just way too small for her feet. They were so small that she had to cut open the front of her shoes to let her toes stick out. And I just remember thinking, wouldn't it be nice if there were a pair of shoes that could grow with her feet?”

However, Lee says it was not easy to turn his idea into a reality. “I kept writing down I should do this because of this or because of that. All these reasons why it really was important for me to try to make the shoes that could grow and try to help.” Finally, in 2009 Lee founded a non-profit organization called Because International. In the office of Because International, Lee keeps a pair of his own shoes to help him remember his promise. “I told myself I would not get new shoes until the idea was done. So, those are the shoes that I wore for a little over five years.”

1.Which of the following is the characteristic of the newly invented shoes?

A. They are more expensive.

B. They are not so comfortable.

C. They can grow with a child.

D. They come in different sizes.

2.Who is this kind of newly invented shoes intended for?

A. All the teenagers.

B. Children aged 4 to 14.

C. Middle-aged women in Africa.

D. Senior citizens with low income.

3.What does Para. 4 mainly talk about?

A. How the shoes work.

B. How Lee got his inspiration.

C. How to make the new shoes.

D. Where to order this kind of shoes.

4.Why does Kenton Lee keep a pair of his own shoes in the office?

A. To remind him of his promise.

B. To copy the design of them.

C. To get a change conveniently.

D. To use them as an example.

“We are good mothers,” I said to my friend, as we sat on our comfortable beach chairs under our beach umbrella and watched our children playing in the waves.

Out of nowhere, the children took off running. About fifty yards from us, a man—maybe in his fifties—was fishing. The children stood next to him and watched with their little mouths hanging open as he cast the fishing lines. He smiled at them. They ran back to us—all except my three-year-old daughter, Drew.

My heart beat fast with horror. “Drew! Come here! Play with your friends!” I shouted, very aware that my speeches about not talking to strangers weren’t working. It seemed that many parents heard of horrible stories about children being taken away by strangers. Responsible mothers should teach their children that the world is a dangerous place. So I felt relieved when Drew ran towards me and took hold of a shovel (铲子). Then she looked me in the eye: “I want to be with the person.”

Again, she approached the middle-aged man, and started digging next to him.

Several seconds later, she returned, waving something shiny.

“Look, Mommy! A toy fish!”

It was, indeed, a toy fish—yellow and rubber. This must have been what he was using to attract the fish. And he’d given it to Drew. The three other children were deeply impressed, and they didn’t try to hide how jealous(妒忌的)they were—clearly, they all wanted the fish.

“My friend gave me that fish!” Drew shouted loudly. The sand in front of the umbrella turned into a preschool cage match with a yellow rubber fish flying through the air. I felt like I might cry myself.

Unexpectedly, there he was: the man, standing right next to us with three more rubber fish in hand. He handed them to each of the children. By their faces, you would have thought he was actually the really kind big brother.

“Thank you,” I said, realizing that there is good and kindness in strangers.

1. How did the author feel when Drew stood beside the man?

A. relieved B. angry C. concerned D. calm

2. What does the author think good mothers should do?

A. be around their kids

B. warn their kids of danger

C. teach their kids to behave well

D. devote themselves to helping their kids

3. When was the author at a loss(迷茫)?

A. Drew handed her the toy fish

B. The kids fought for the toy fish

C. The toy fish was covered with sand

D. The stranger appeared from nowhere

4. What would be the best title for the text?

A. Give a kid a fish

B. We are good mothers

C. The world is dangerous

D. Teach kids to be kind

The stories we share with one another are important. They show wisdom and provide inspiration. They are important to our development. But sometimes people choose not to tell.

Consider the negative effects of not sharing a story in the news: People are wondering if public health officials are holding back too much information about the recent outbreak of Ebola.

There is a danger in holding back stories that ought to be told. Bobette Buster said it was like this, “The fact is, history has shown us that stories not told can become like a dangerous genie (妖怪) left in a bottle. When they are finally uncorked, their power to destroy is set free.”

There are a number of reasons why we hide parts of our story: they often show our weaknesses or expose our disadvantages; they require courage and strength to share; and of course, there are some stories that should be kept secret—especially those that embarrass someone else.

Most of us have two selves: the one we display on the outside and the one we actually are on the inside. And the better we get at hiding the stories that show our true selves, the more damage we may be causing to ourselves and to others.

Honesty and openness is important. It proves we are trustworthy. It displays we are human. We are not perfect or better. It highlights the importance of hard work and personal development. Hard work may not allow us to overcome our disadvantages completely. But with hard work, we do not have to be restricted to our mistakes.

Does this mean we admit every weakness, every disadvantage, and every secret regret to everybody we meet? No, of course not. There is a time and a place and a certain level of relationship necessary for some stories to be told in an appropriate manner.

1.What’s the function of the example in Paragraph 2?

A. It reflects that people are concerned about the spread of Ebola.

B. It shows the bad effect caused by sharing a story.

C. It proves not sharing a story can cause trouble.

D. It concludes that one should share a story at a proper time.

2.One of the reasons why people are unwilling to share experiences is that ________.

A. story-sharing highlights the importance of hard work

B. people are used to exposing their weaknesses

C. people sometimes have no courage to share their stories

D. some stories make people feel sad

3.Which is close in meaning to the underlined word “uncorked” in Paragraph 3?

A. freedB. brokenC. unfoldedD. untouched

4.The writer aims to convince us to ________.

A. be open to people close to you by sharing some secrets

B. share stories appropriately for the good of others and ourselves

C. remove the dangers that can be caused by untold stories

D. realize the importance of being honest when making friends
