It may help you to know that there is no such thing as a perfect speech. At some point in every speech, every speaker says something that is not understood exactly as he has planned.Fortunately, such moments are usually not obvious(明显的) to the listeners. Why?Because the listeners do not know what the speaker plans to say. They hear only what the speaker does say.If you lose your place for a moment, wrongly change the order of a couple of sentences,or forget to pause at a certain point,no one will be any the wiser. When such moments occur, don’t worry about them.Just continue as if nothing happened.

Even if you do make an obvious mistake during a speech, that doesn’t really matter. If you have ever listened to Martin Luther King’s famous speech—“I Have a Dream”,you may notice that he stumbles(结巴) over his words twice during the speech. Most likely, however, you don’t remember. Why?Because you were fixing your attention on his message rather than on his way of speech-making.

People care a lot about making a mistake in a speech because they regard speech-making as a kind of performance rather than as an act of communication(交流).They feel the listeners are like judges in an ice-skating competition. But,in fact, the listeners are not looking for a perfect performance. They are looking for a well-thought-out speech that expresses the speaker’s ideas clearly and directly.Sometimes a mistake or two can actually increase a speaker’s attractiveness by making him more human.

As you work on your speech, don’t worry about being perfect.Once you free your mind of this, you will find it much easier to give your speech freely.

The underlined part in the first paragraph means that no one will _______.

A.be smarter than you                                       B.notice your mistakes

C.do better than you                                         D.know what you are talking about

You don’t remember obvious mistakes in a speech because _______.

A.your attention is on the content

B.you don’t fully understand the speech

C.you don’t know what the speaker plans to say

D.you find the way of speech-making more important

It can be inferred from the passage that _______.

A.giving a speech is like giving a performance

B.one or two mistakes in a speech may not be bad

C.the listeners should pay more attention to how a speech is made

D.the more mistakes a speaker makes, the more attractive he will be

What would be the best title for the passage?

A.How to Be a Perfect Speaker

B.How to Make a Perfect Speech

C.Don’t Expect a Perfect Speech

D.Don’t Expect Mistakes in a Speech

For a while, my neighborhood was taken over by an army of joggers(慢跑的人). They were there all the time: early morning, noon, and evening. There were little old ladies in gray sweats, young couples in Adidas shoes, middle-aged men with red faces. “Come on!” My friend Alex encouraged me to join him as he jogged by my house every evening. “You’ll feel great.”

Well, I had nothing against feeling great and if Alex could jog every day, anyone could. So I took up jogging seriously and gave it a good two months of my life, and not a day more. Based on my experience, jogging is the most overvalued form of exercise around, and judging from the number of the people who left our neighborhood jogging army. I’m not alone in my opinion.

First of all, jogging is very hard on the body. Your legs and feet are a real pounding(沉重的脚步) running down a road for two or three miles. I developed foot, leg, and back problems. Then I read about a nationally famous jogger who died of a heart attack while jogging, and I had something else to worry about. Jogging doesn’t kill hundreds of people, but if you have any physical weaknesses, jogging will surely bring them out, as they did with me.

Secondly, I got no enjoyment out of jogging. Putting one foot in front of the other for forty-five minutes isn’t my idea of fun. Jogging is also a lonely pastime. Some joggers say, “I love being out there with just my thoughts” Well, my thoughts began to bore me, and most of them were on how much my legs hurt.

And how could I enjoy something that brought me pain? And that wasn’t just the first week—it was practically every day for two months. I never got past the pain level, and pain isn’t fun. What a cruel way to do it! So many other exercises, including walking, lead to almost the same results painlessly, so why jog?

I don’t jog any more, and I don’t think I ever will. I’m walking two miles three times a week at a fast pace, and that feels good. I bicycle to work when the weather is good. I’m getting exercise, and I’m enjoying it at the same time. I could never say the same for jogging, and I’ve found a lot of better ways to stay in shape.

1.From the first paragraph, we learn that in the writer’s neighborhood _________.

A.Jogging became very popular

B.People jogged only during the daytime

C.Alex organized an army of joggers

D.Jogging provided a chance to get together

2.The underlined word “them”(Paragraph 3) most probably refers to _____.

A.heart attacks                           B.back problems

C.hundreds of people                     D.physical weaknesses

3.From the writer’s experience, we can conclude that_____

A.Jogging can help people keep fit

B.Many physical problems result from jogging

C.Not everyone enjoys jogging

D.Jogging makes people feel greater

Having one of those days—or weeks—when everything seems to annoy you? Even if you do nothing about it, your bad mood(心情) will probably go away after some time. But with a little effort, you can forget it much faster—often within a day or two.

    Walk it off

Exercise is the most popular bad mood buster. A person who's in a bad mood has low energy and high tension. Taking a fast ten-minute walk, or doing some quick  exercises can do wonders towards changing the bad mood.

Tune it out

Listening to your favorite music for a while can also make tension go away quickly, because music starts connection with past positive experiences we've had.

Give yourself a pep talk

Stop and listen to what's on your mind. Bad moods are often started by too many negative thoughts. Write them all down on paper, the pessimistic(悲观的) messages you've been giving yourself, and then give optimistic answers. (“I still don't have a job.” vs “I have two interviews next week.”)

Reduce your stress

Relaxation techniques are wonderful moodlifters. These include deep breathing, stretching and visualizing(想像), all of which sound complicated(复杂的) but aren't. One easy way to visualize: close your eyes and picture a favorite place, such as the beach. Another simple way to distress is to make a todo list. One reason for being in a bad mood is feeling you have no options. By taking control over certain areas,  you realize you're not helpless. You can make changes in your mood and life.

Avoid things that won't improve your mood

TV may not help much: you need to increase your energy level and stimulate(刺激) your mind—something that the TV show “Neighbors” won't do. And before you reach for that piece of cake and coffee, think about how mood and food are linked. Sugar and caffeine contribute to depressed moods. The better choice? Research shows that carbohydrates, such as potatoes and pasta(面食), produce calming effects in people who have a desire for them.

1.Which of the following may help us stop a bad mood?

A. Doing nothing about it           B. Exercising and enjoying music.

C.Writing down negative thoughts    D.Talking about it with neighbors.

2.Why is it suggested that you close your eyes and picture the beach?

A. It helps remove bad mood.         B. It brings us a new technique.

C. It is not complicated to do so.       D. It is an area to be easily controlled.

3.TV may not improve your mood because it _____________.

A. shows what happens around you       B. does not energize you

C. reminds you of eating and drinking     D. produces a calming effect

4.Which would be the best title for this passage?

A. Energy Level and Stress       B. How to Beat a Bad Mood

C. Bad Mood and Our Life       D. How to Control Your Feeling

You probably know you should say “ please” and “thank you ” at restaurants. You probably know the rules of a library. You know you should respect and be nice to your classmates. But do you have music manners?

Keep It Down! You have to notice the volumeof your music. You should not play your music so loud that everyone around you can hear it. Some people might even get angry. Usually, when you play the music loud on an MP3 player, other people can’t hear the words of the song. They just hear a loud sound. Not one wants to listen to this. Very loud music can also be bad for your ears, so even if you are alone when listening to our MP3 player, you shouldn’t have it turned up too high.

Take Them off! You need to know when to turn your MP3 player off and put it away. Libraries and schools don’t allow MP3 players. There are other places, like museums, that don’t have rules, but it would be rude to have your MP3 player on. Sometimes, it just doesn’t make sense to listen to your MP3 player at event. Why would you listen to music at a play, a movie or a sporting event? You would miss what is going on and others would wonder why you even came.

Take One Out! Once in a while it’s okay just to take out one earphone and not other. Imagine you are listening to your MP3 player when someone asks you the way. It would not be rude to take out one earphone, tell him the way, and put back the earphone and continue listening. You can also do this when you order food at a fast-food restaurant or when you answer the telephone and it’s not for you.

It’s Your Choice! There are times when you need to decide what is the best. For example, some people can listen to music on their MP3 Players when reading books, while others think it is disturbing. In cases like this, you need to do what seems right for you.
