According to a new US study, couples who expect their children to help care for them in old age should hope they have daughters because they are likely to be twice as attentive as sons overall.

The research by Angelina Grigoryeva, a sociologist at Princeton University, found that, while women provide as much care for their elderly parents as they can manage, men do as little as they can get away with and often leave it to female family members.

Her analysis of the family networks of 26,000 older Americans concluded that gender(性别) is the most important predictor(预示物) of whether or not people will actively care for elderly parents.

In a paper being presented at the annual conference of the American Sociological Association in San Francisco, she concludes that simply having a sister makes men statistically likely provide less care.

Using data from the University of Michigan Health and Retirement Study, a study which has been tracking a cross-section of over-50s for the last decade, she calculated that women provide an average of 12.3 hours a month of care for elderly parents while men offer only 5.6 hours.

“Whereas the amount of elderly parent care daughters provide is associated with limitations they face, such as employment or childcare, sons’ caregiving is associated only with the presence or absence of other helpers, such as sisters or a parent’s spouse(配偶),” she explained.

“Sons reduce their relative caregiving efforts when they have a sister, while daughters increase theirs when they have a brother.”

“This suggests that sons pass on parent caregiving responsibilities to their sisters.”

In the UK, the 2011 census(人口普查) showed that there are now around 6.5 million people with caring responsibilities – a figure which has risen by a tenth in a decade.

But many are doing so at the risk of their own health. The census showed that those who provide 50 hours or more of care a week while trying to hold down a full- time job are three times more likely to be struggling with ill health than their working counterparts(相对应的人) who are not carers.

1.What’s the most important factor to predict if people will actively care for the elderly?

A. Gender. B. Education.

C. Career. D. Family networks.

2.The US study finds that _______.

A. sons are twice as likely as daughters to care for parents in old age

B. having a sister makes men less likely to do their fair share

C. sons and daughters seem to give equal care to their parents

D. sons are unwilling to leave caregiving responsibilities to female family members

3.What does the author stress in the last paragraph?

A. People should give up their jobs to care for the elderly.

B. Many care providers work longer hours than others.

C. People shouldn’t pass on caring responsibilities to others.

D. Many care providers have potential health problems.

4.The author develops the text by _______.

A. explaining social networks of careers

B. describing people’s experiences

When it comes to the Internet, people talk about the password most. Actually, it’s been under fire for a long time. Research has shown that passwords are not a very good way to protect sensitive information.

People would use some random characters, numbers and symbols. Furthermore, a unique password would be used for every site or application the user uses. Unfortunately, the longer and more complex passwords become, the more people are likely to forger them. Therefore, they use the same password for every service or application. These are all big no-noes and essentially defeat the purpose of a password.

Google is trying to kill off passwords on Android devices by introducing the Trust API, which does what simple passwords cannot and gives developers a framework for securing their application using a number of security systems and metrics(衡量标准)on the device. A Trust Score will be generated based on a number of metrics including your device location, face scanning, fingerprints, and the things like your typing speed or the way you speak. Taken one at a time, these metrics are not secure. But taken together, these metrics will help recognize the real “you”.

The good news is that Google has already been testing this on real world data. Google has proven the Trust API works. Next Google will run tests will some banks to see if the Trust API meets their needs before rolling out the system on Android phones later. It may take another year for apps and popular sites to start using the Trust API.

This is a pretty exciting change. Passwords have been around for a lone time. Although the security of systems has been improved, the usability of systems hasn’t been proved much. Google appears to have the best of them. Maybe that never-ending conflict between security and convenience will be able to take a break once the Trust system comes out.

1.What is implied in the underlined sentence in Para. 2?

A. Users make mistakes in using passwords.

B. Users should know the purpose of passwords.

C. Users have learnt to say no to their passwords.

D. Users misunderstand the meaning of passwords.

2.How is the key part of the Trust API generated?

A. By taking one metric at a time.

B. By combining various metrics.

C. By developing security systems.

D. By analyzing complex passwords.

3.What can we know about the Trust system from the text?

A. It needs to be improved in the future.

B. It hasn’t been proven to be effective.

C. It will be used on Android devices first.

D. It is secure and convenient for the users.

4.What would be the best title for the text?

A. How does Google develop the Trust API?

B. Will the Trust API meet the users’ needs?

C. Will passwords soon be a thing of the past?

D. How do passwords protect personal information?

In 1999,twelve percent of public elementary schools in the United States required students to wear uniforms. Just three years later, the amount was almost double that.

A study of six big-city Ohio public schools showed students who were required to wear uniforms had improved graduation, behavior and attendance rates.Academic performance was unchanged.

Some high schools in Texas have also joined in the movement.Yet studies find mixed results from requiring uniforms. And some schools have turned away from such policies.

Supporters believe dressing the same creates a better learning environment and safer schools. The school district in Long Beach,California, was the first in the country to require uniforms in all elementary and middle schools. The example helped build national interest in uniforms as a way to deal with school violence and improve learning.

Findings in Long Beach suggested that the policy resulted in fewer behavior problems and better attendance. But researcher Viktoria, who has looked at those findings, says they were based only on opinions about the effects of uniforms.

She says other steps taken at the same time to improve schools in Long Beach and statewide could have influenced the findings. The district (the area marked by government) increased punishments for misbehavior. And California passed a law to reduce class sizes.

In Florida, for example, researcher Sharon found that uniforms seemed to improve behavior and reduce violence. In Texas,Eloise found fewer discipline problems among students required to wear uniforms, but no effect on attendance.

Sociologist David has studied school uniform policies since1998.He collected the reports in the book.In his own study,he found that reading and mathematics performance dropped after a school in Pennsylvania(宾夕法尼亚州)required uniforms.

Political and community pressures may persuade schools to go to uniforms to improve learning. But David and others believe there is not enough evidence of a direct relationship. In fact,he says requiring uniforms may even increase discipline problems.

1.Which of the following researchers are NOT supporters of school uniform policies?

A. Viktoria and Sharon. B. Sharon and David.

C. Eloise and Sharon. D. Viktoria and David.

2.The underlined word “misbehavior” in the sixth paragraph probably means ________.

A. serious crime B. bad performance

C. absence for class D. action against wearing uniforms

3.What can we infer from the passage?

A. More work is needed to get better information about uniform’s effect.

B. The number of schools requiring uniforms in the U.S.will become less sharply.

C. Wearing uniforms has little to do with behavior and learning.

D. Politicians and communities won’t vote for uniform policies.

4.What’s the main idea of this passage?

A. More and more students are required to wear uniforms in the U.S.

B. Wearing uniforms contributes to good academic performance.

C. Researchers in the U.S.argue for school uniform policies.

D. Evidence for school uniform polices in the U.S.is seen as weak.

When I walked into the house after school, I found my dad at home.

"What are you doing home already?" I asked casually.

"Andrew, I was laid off today," he answered quietly.

I was sure he was joking. "No, you weren't. Why are you really home?"

Then I noticed his expression and realized he was telling the truth. My father has always been a hard worker and prided himself on his career. My father's unemployment created many changes in our lives. He was home all day, which meant my bed had to be made, my room cleaned up, and my homework done right after school. I would come home every day to find him at the computer searching for jobs. I began to notice how down he seemed, and how losing his job had affected his self-esteem, though he tried to be optimistic. He asked my brother and me to spend less money. I gave up my allowance, which even though it wasn't much, felt like the right thing to do. I also found a part-time job.

After several difficult months of searching, my dad decided to go in a totally different direction. He explained that he never wanted to be laid off again, so he was going to start his own business. Day by day, I watched him build it, and I admired how much time and energy he devoted to it.

One evening I asked if he needed help. "Only if it doesn't interfere(打扰,妨碍) with school," he said, which sounded like a yes.

I showed up at his office the next afternoon, and most afternoons after that for two months. I always knew he was a hard worker, but watching him in action really influenced me. Although this was one of the worst experiences for our family, it taught me a lot about dealing with adversity. Now I know that through creative problem-solving, I can always find Plans, ask for help, and take risks.

1.When the father was laid off, he ________.

A. was angry with his boss

B. didn't care about it at all

C. couldn't accept the fact easily

D. was as happy as usual

2.We can know from the passage that ________.

A. it was not easy for the father to find a new job

B. the father asked his sons to give up their allowance

C. the father found a good job when he changed his direction

D. Andrew and his brother helped his father set up his business

3.The underlined word "adversity" in the last paragraph probably means .

A. poor feelings

B. bad situations

C. low spirits

D. old ideas

4.What has Andrew learned from his father?

A. The spirit of creative problem-solving.

B. The skills of surfing the Internet.

C. The experience of saving money.

D. The rich business skills.
