9.Holidays are really important.Many of us will have childhood memories of summer holidays where we were taken away from home to experience new environments and learn in different ways.
But holidays are expensive and,for those on low wages or living on benefits,they are often unobtainable.Even the cheapest holidays require travel and other additional costs that are difficult for many families to meet.
For working parents,the long summer break can be a very difficult problem for childcare.When an annual leave allowance amounts to only five weeks,there is a need to spread this across the year.Couples can find themselves taking leave in turn in order to care for children who are on holiday.For some,this makes even an affordable family holiday difficult.
The schools that I visit in Nottingham are full of experienced staff committed to giving our children a caring and inspiring learning environment.The number of children receiving free school meals is quite large in Nottingham and many schools have breakfast clubs to make sure that children get a healthy start to the day.Most schools undertake programs of group or individual educational support.Schools also have an important role in safeguarding children's welfare through the ongoing touch and support with their pupils.During the long summer holidays,much of this is missed.
While teachers are holidaying in the UK,many of their pupils spend the whole six weeks on the street where they live.The lack of free school meals for six weeks can result in pressure on a family budget and an inability to afford the inspiring experiences that help children to continue their learning.
In setting out its plans for a five-term year,Nottingham City Council (委员会)is seeking to reduce the summer holiday down to four and a half weeks,with a.more balanced five terms of roughly eight weeks,each followed by a two-week break.We believe this will give real"down time"for school staff and pupils alike but will be short enough not to cause a real break in learning.
We acknowledge that this change may be difficult for some school staff,particularly whose own children are educated in other authorities.However,this must be weighed against the benefits for city children for whom we all have the greatest duty of care.

Insetting out its plans for a five-term year,Nottingham City Council (委员会)is seeking to reduce the summer holiday down to fourand a half weeks, with a more balanced five terms of roughly eight weeks, eachfollowed by a two-week break."
But holidays are expensive and,for those on low wages or living on benefits, theyare often unobtainable."
Insetting out its plans for a five-term year,Nottingham City Council (委员会)is seeking to reduce the summer holiday down to fourand a half weeks, with a more balanced five terms of roughly eight weeks, eachfollowed by a two-week break."
The lack of free school meals for six weeks can result in pressure on a family budgetand an inability to afford the inspiring experiences that help children tocontinue their learning."
We acknowledge that this change may be difficult for some school staff, particularly whose own children are educated in other authorities. However, thismust be weighed against the benefits for city children for whom we all have thegreatest duty of care."

Experts say people around the world wash their hands every day,but very few use soap at so-called important moments.These include after using the toilet,after cleaning a baby and before touching food.
Global Handwashing Day is the idea of the Public-Private Partnership for Handwashing with Soap.Partners include the United Nations Children's Fund,American government agencies,the World Bank and soap makers Unlever and Procter and Gamble.The organizers say all soaps are equally effective at removing disease-causing germ.They say the correct way to wash is to wet your hands with a small amount of water and cover them with soap.Rub it into all areas,including under the fingernails.Rub for at least twenty seconds.Then  rinsewell under running water.Finally,dry your hands with a clean cloth or wave them in the air.
The Partnership for Handwashing says soap is important because it increases the time that people spend in washing hands.Soap also helps to break up the dirt that holds most of the germs.And it usually leaves a pleasant smell.The Partnership for Handwashing also says washing with soap before eating or after using the toilet could save more lives than any vaccine(疫苗)or medicine.Hand washing could also prevent the spread of other diseases.When people get germs on their hands,they can infect themselves by touching their eyes,noses or mouths.Then they can infect others.

14.When something goes wrong,it can be very satisfying to say,"Well,it's so-and-so's fault."Or"I know I'm late,but it's not my fault; the car broke down."It is probably not your fault,but once you form the habit of blaming somebody or something else for a bad situation,you are a loser.You have no power and could do nothing that helps change the situation.However,you can have great power over what happens to you if you stop focusing on whom to blame and start focusing on how to remedy the situation.This is the winner's key to success.
Winners are great at overcoming problems.For example,if you were late because your car broke down,maybe you need to have your car examined more regularly.Or,you might start to carry along with you the useful phone numbers,so you could call for help when in need.For another example,if your colleague (同事) causes you problems on the job for lack of responsibility or ability,find ways of dealing with his irresponsibility or inability rather than simply blame the person.Ask to work with a different person,or don't rely on this person.You should accept that the person is not reliale and find creative ways to work successfully regardless of how your colleague fails to do his job well.
This is what being a winner is all about-creatively using your skills and talents so that you are successful no matter what happens.Winners don't have fewer problems in their lives; they have just as many difficult situations to face as anybody else.They are just better at seeing those problems as challenges and opportunities to develop their own talents.So,stop focusing on"whose fault it is."Once you are confident about your power over bad situations,problems are
just stepping stones for success.
28.According to the passage,winnersB.
A.meet with fewer difficulties in their lives

29.The underlined word"remedy"in Paragraph 1is closest in meaning toA.
A.improve
B.accept
C.damage
D.consider
30.When your colleague brings about a problem,you shouldB.
A.blame him for his lack of responsibility
B.find a better way to handle the problem
C.tell him to find the cause of the problem
D.ask a more able colleague for help
31.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?D
A.A Winner's Opportunity.
B.A Winner's Achievement.
C.A Winner's Problem.

1.I log onto a computer at the doctor's office to say I have arrived and then wait until a voice calls me into the examination room.
There,a robotic nurse directs me onto a device and then takes my blood pressure. Some time later,in steps the doctor, who is also a robot. He notes down my symptoms and gives me a prescription (处方).I pay for my visit using a credit card machine and return home without having met another human being.
When I call my dentist's office and actually get a human being on the line,I am thrilled. And when I see the introduction of yet more self-service checkout stations at the grocery store,I feel like shouting,"When it comes to cashiers, make mine human, please!"
After all, human cashiers sometimes give you a store coupon (优惠券) for items you are buying.Even more than that,real-life cashiers often take an interest in particularly cute children, which can brighten a young mother's day.A cashier may also show compassion (同情)for an elderly person struggling to get that last penny out of her purse.
What technological device would do any of this?I don't want to go back to the Stone Age,but I'm also worried about a world run by machines.Sometimes when you're chatting with someone, you discover things you need to know.Maybe a receptionist needs prayers said for a sick child.Maybe a salesperson can offer a bit of encouragement to a customer who is feeling tired.
Machines can be efficient and cost-effective and they often get the job done just fine. But they lack an element so important to everyday life.
Call it the spirit, the soul or the heart. It is something no machine will ever have.It is being human that encourages us to smile at others, which may be what they need at that moment.

C.To warn readers of the possible dangers of robotic nurses and doctors.
D.To predict how technology can affect the way we see a doctor in the future.
25.Why does the author prefer being served by humans rather than by robots?C
A.Robots don't offer to give store coupons.
B.Robots can't provide efficient services.
C.Robots are indifferent and emotionless.
D.Robots are unable to do a job as well as humans.
26.What's the author's attitude towards machines?D
A.He wishes one day they would come to life.
B.He is absolutely against their existence in his life.
C.He is afraid they would take the place of human beings.

6.The poverty line is the minimum income that people need for an acceptable standard of living.People with incomes below the poverty line are considered poor.Economists study the causes of poverty in order to find solutions to the problem.
As the general standard of living in the country rises,the poverty line does,too.Therefore,even with today's relatively high standard of living,about 10percent of the people in the United States are below the poverty line.However,if these people had stable jobs,they could have an acceptable standard of living.Economists suggest several reasons why poor people do not have jobs.
For one thing,more than half of the poor people in the United States are not qualified to work.Over 40percent of the poor people are children.By law,children less than 16years old cannot work in many industries.And over 10percent of the poor people are old.Many companies do not hire people over 65years old,the normal retirement age.
Some poor adults do not look for jobs for a variety of personal reasons:they are sick, they do not have any motivation (动力),they have family problems,or they do not believe that they can find a job.
Other poor people look for a job but cannot find one.Many poor adults never went to high school.Therefore,when they look for jobs,they have few skills that they can offer.
At the present time, the government thinks it can reduce poverty in the country in the following ways.
First,if the national economy grows,businesses and industries hire more workers.Some of the poor who are qualified to look for jobs may find employment.Then they will no longer be below the poverty line.
Second,if society invests in the poor,the poor will become more productive.If the government spends money on social programs,education,and training for poor people,the poor will have the skills to offer.Then it is more likely that they can find jobs.
Finally,if the government distributes society's income differently,it raises some poor people above the poverty line.The government collects taxes from the non-poor and gives money to the poor.These payments to the poor are called welfare.In 2010over 18million people in the United States received welfare.
Some economists are looking for better solutions to the poverty problem.However,at the present time,many people depend on welfare for a minimally acceptable standard of living.

(Note:Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TEN WORDS.)
81.What does the poverty line in a country change with?The general standard of living.
82.Most of the American poor people are not qualified for employment becausethey are too young or too old(towork).
83.In order for the poor to have the skills to offer,the government must invest insocial programs, education, and training for poor people.
84.How do those below the poverty line enjoy the existing welfare from the government?
