There have been many great inventions that changed the way we live. The first great invention was one that is still very important today—the wheel. This made it easier to carry heavy things and to travel long distances. For hundreds of years after that there were few inventions that had as much effect as the wheel. Then in the early 1800's the world started to change. There was little unknown land left in the world.People did not have to explore much anymore. They began to work instead to make life better. In the second half of the 19th century many great inventions were made.Among them were the camera, the electric light and the radio. These all became a big part of our life today.

The first part of the 20th century saw more great inventions. The helicopter in 1909.Movies with sound in 1926.The computer in 1928.And jet planes in 1930.This was also a time when a new material was first made.Nylon came out in 1935.It changed the kind of clothes people wear. The middle part of the 20th century brought new ways to help people get over disease. They worked very well. They made people healthier and let them live longer lives.By the 1960's most people could expect to live to be at least 60.By this time most people had a very good life.

Of course new inventions continued to be made. But man now had a desire to explore again. The world was known to man but the stars were not.Man began looking for ways to go into space.Russia made the first step. Then the United States took a step.Since then other countries, including China and Japan, have made their steps into space. In 1969 man took his biggest step away from the earth.Americans first walked on the moon. This is certainly just a beginning though.

Nothing could stop Dad. After he was put on disability for a bad back, he bought a small farm in the country, just enough to grow food for the family. He planted vegetables, fruit trees and even kept bees for honey.

And every week he cleaned Old Man McColgin’s chicken house in exchange for manure. The smell really burned the inside of your nose. When we complained about the terrible smell, Dad said the stronger the manure, the healthier the crops, and he was right. For example, just one of his cantaloupes filled the entire house with its sweet smell, and the taste was even sweeter.

As the vegetables started coming in, Dad threw himself into cooking. One day, armed with a basket of vegetables, he announced he was going to make stew. Dad pulled out a pressure cooker and filled it up with cabbages, eggplants, potatoes, corns, onions and carrots. For about half an hour, the pressure built and the vegetables cooked. Finally, Dad turned off the stove, the pot began to cool and the pressure relief valve sprayed out a cloud of steam. If we thought Dad's pile of chicken manure was bad, this was 10 times worse. When Dad took off the lid, the smell nearly knocked us out.

Dad carried the pot out and we opened doors and windows to air out the house. Just how bad was it? The neighbors came out of their houses to see if we had a gas leak!

Determined, Dad filled our plates with steaming stew and passed them around it didn't look that bad, and after the first wave had shut down my ability to smell, it didn't offend the nose so much, edible, and we drank up every last drop of soup!

1.What can we infer about Dad’s stew?

A.It is popular among the neighbors.

B.It contains honey and vegetables.

C.It looks very wonderful.

D.It tastes quite delicious.

2.What does the underlined word “offend” in the last paragraph mean?

A.To attract. B.To upset.

C.To air. D.To shut.

3.What can we learn about Dad from the text?

B.He is a troublesome father.

C.He has a positive attitude to life.

D.He suffers a lot from his disability.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

I regularly train at a local boxing gym and I’m lucky enough to meet an amazing man, Adrian Charter. Adrian comes to the gym to train, just like me. The difference is, I’m 31 years old, and Adrian is 72!

I watched Adrian as he was training, early on a Sunday morning, and he was hitting the punching bag harder and quicker than most men in their twenties would. Adrian was a former boxer whose last professional fight was in 1972. Even though he has stopped competing as a boxer, his discipline(纪律) still makes him stick to a training rule.

It simply amazed me as to how a 72-year-old man could train so hard. Believe me, boxing is one of the most difficult sports on the earth, needing much patience, skill, and effort.

What surprised me even more was that a few days earlier he did some running. He ran 9 kilometers. He does this on a regular basis. For me, I can run 5 kilometers at most.

When I questioned him about how he kept such discipline, he calmly replied, “It is all in my mind.”

I thought about it for a moment. If discipline can push a 72-year-old man to train so hard and enjoy it, could I imagine how discipline could serve every single human being on the earth? Right at this point, as you read this story, please pause and ask yourself, “What is my level of discipline?”

Adrian’s example told me that the power of discipline will get us to the finishing line! The bigger the challenge is, the more our discipline can serve us and the sweeter the taste of success will be!

1.The author noticed Adrian Charter mostly because Adrian Charter _______ .

A. was a famous former boxer

B. was the oldest in the boxing gym

C. acted faster even than young people

D. didn’t want to compete any longer

2.What does the author think of boxing?

A. It has high requirements.

B. It has strict training rules.

C. It has a limit to people’s age.

D. It makes people become quick and strong.

3.The underlined sentence in the last paragraph probably means “______ ”.

A. Rome was not built in a day

B. no pains, no gains

C. failure is the mother of success

D. early birds can catch worms

4.What can be the best title for the text?

A. Grasp every chance to keep fit

B. An unforgotten experience

Each spring brings a new blossom of wildflowers in the ditches(沟渠)along the highway I travel daily to work.

There is one particular blue flower that has always caught my eye. I've noticed that it blooms only in the morning hours; the afternoon sun is too warm for it. Every day for approximately two weeks, I see those beautiful

flowers.

This spring, I started a wildflower garden in our yard. I can look out of the kitchen window while doing the dishes and see the flowers. I've often thought that those lovely blue flowers from the ditch would look great in that bed alongside other wildflowers. Every day I drove past the flowers thinking, "I'II stop on my way home and dig them." "Gee, I don't want to get my good clothes dirty.,." Whatever the reason, I never stopped to dig them. My husband even gave me a folding tool one year for my trunk to be used for that expressed purpose.

One day on my way home from work, I was upset to see that the highway department had removed the ditches

and the pretty blue flowers were gone. I thought to myself, "Way to go, you waited too long. You should have done it when you first saw them blooming this spring."

A week ago we were shocked and sad to learn that my oldest sister-in-law has a serious brain disease. She is20 years older than my husband and unfortunately, because of age and distance, we haven't been as close as we all would have liked. I couldn't help but see the connection between the pretty blue flowers and the relationship between my husband's sister and us. I do believe that God has given us some time left to plant some wonderful

memories that will bloom every year for us.

And yes, if I see the blue flowers again, you can bet I'll stop and transplant them to my wildflower garden.

1. Why does the writer want to start a wildflower garden in her yard?

A. Because the flowers bloom only in the morning hours.

B. Because she can see the flowers every day for two weeks.

C. Because the flowers can remind her of her oldest sister-in-law.

D. Because she enjoys the way of life in company with the flowers.

2. Which statement is NOT true according to the passage?

A. The blue flowers in the ditches always draw my attention.

B. We don't get on well with the sister-in-law in practice.

C. I never stopped to dig the flowers for some reason.

D. The sister-in-law lives far from us.

3. According to the passage, the writer will .

A. stop to find the flowers whenever she drives along the highway

B. plant a variety of flowers in the garden in her yard in future

C. get as wonderful memories with the sister-in-law as before

D. get more close to the sister-in-law in the following days

4. What is the theme of the story?

A. Actions speak louder than words.

B. No sweets without sweat.

C. Time and tide wait for no man.

D. Opportunity belongs to whoever is prepared.
