How can you find out what is going on inside a person' s body without opening the patient up? Regular X-rays can show a lot. CAT scans can show even more. They can give three-dimensional(三维) view of body organs(器官).

What is a CAT scan? CAT stands for Computerized Axial Tomography(层面X线照相术). It is a special X-ray machine that gets a 360 - degree picture of a small area of a patient's body.

Doctors use X-rays to study and examine diseases and injuries within the body. X-rays can find foreign objects inside the body or to take pictures of some organs inside if special things as dyes or special liquids are added to the organs to be X-rayed.

A CAT scanner, however, uses a beam(光束) of X-rays to give a cross-sectional view of a particular part of the body. A fine beam of X-rays is scanned across the body and circled around the patient from many different angles(角度). A computer analyzes(分析) the information from each angle and produces a clear cross-sectional picture on the screen. This picture is then photographed for later use. Several cross-sections, taken one after another, can give a clear "photo" of the entire body or of any body organs. The newest CAT scanners can even give a clear picture of active, moving organs just as a fast-action camera can "stop the action" giving clear pictures of what appear only mistily(模糊) to the eye. And because of the 360 - degree pictures, CAT scans show 3-dimensional views of organs in a manner that was once only seen during surgery or autopsy (examining a dead body).

69. According to the first two paragraphs, doctors can see the inside of a patient's body by ______.

A. giving the patient an operation

B. checking body organs

C. getting a 360-degree picture of a small area of a patient's body

D. examining the CAT

From the last paragraph, we can infer that ______.

A. the newest pictures become more misty

B. many pictures can be taken at the same time

C. the information about the scanned patient is not highly valued

D. some pictures of the scanned parts of the body are developed for further examinations in the future

The best title of this passage might be ______.

A. Modern X-ray               B. Three-dimensional View

C. Fast - moving Camera       D. CAT Scan

In October 1949 the United Nations brought a number of specialists on food on Geneva, to discuss the problems of eating habits and food supplies of people throughout the world. One problem that interested the specialists particularly was a form of illness, about which little was known among the children in Africa.

Two doctors were chosen to make the study. They flew to Africa and during the next two months visited ten countries. They found that serious diseases of poor eating, often mistaken for other diseases, existed in all parts of Africa. The diseases were similar and could therefore all be named kwashiorkor(恶性营养不良).

The diseased children are usually from one to four years old. As the illness progresses, the child’s stomach becomes swollen(肿胀的) by liquid collecting in the body. The skin changes colour and may break out in open sores(伤口). The hair changes colour and starts to fall out. The patient loses all interest in his surroundings and even in food, and becomes so weak that he wants to lie down all the time. Stomach liquids are no longer produced.

The doctors reasoned that kwashiorkor was found in the young children of this age in many parts of Africa because of lack of milk or meat. Their mothers, after stopping their breast-feeding, gave them foods full of starches(淀粉) instead of greatly needed proteins(蛋白质). They found that the addition of milk to the food of children suffering from kwashiorkor saved many lives.

It was necessary that the children of Africa be helped to eat better. The doctors suggested that the production of foods rich in protein be increased; they thought that more fish should be caught and more nuts should be grown. That urged education plans to teach mothers better ways of feeding children. They suggested that the United Nations should send large quantities of powdered milk to hospitals and child-health centres. Finally, they suggested closer study of all the special problems connected with kwashiorkor.

71. Kwashiorkor is a disease which is caused by _______ .

A. poor living conditions

B. another unknown disease

C. having no food

D. not having enough protein

72. One difficulty in discovering kwashiorkor is that _______ .

A. people know nothing about it

B. it is like other diseases

C. it is hard to see signs of it

D. it does not last long

73. A main sign of the disease is that children who have it _______ .

A. cannot sit still

B. cannot walk

C. have a large stomach

D. are always hungry

74. A good way to cure the disease is by _______ .

A. eating better B. eating more starches

C. eating fruits D. drinking pure water

75. The United Nations can help to put an end to kwashiorkor by sending _______.

The World Health Organization (WHO) planned to study the relationship between the eating habits of the people and the disease. Two doctors were chosen to make the study. They flew to Africa south of the Sahara and during the next two months visited ten countries. They found that serious diseases of poor eating, often mistaken for other diseases, existed in all parts of Africa. The diseases were similar and could therefore all be named kwashiorkor. The diseased children are usually from one to four years old. As the illness progresses, the child’s stomach becomes swollen by liquid collecting in the body. The skin changes color and may break out in open sores(疼痛). The hair changes color and starts to fall out. The patient loses all interest in his surroundings and even in food, and becomes so weak that he wants to lie down all the time. Stomach liquids are no longer produced.

The doctors reasoned that kwashiorkor was found in the young children of this age in many parts of Africa because of lack of milk or meat. Their mothers, after stopping their breastfeeding, gave them foods full of starches(淀粉)instead of greatly needed proteins. They found that the addition of milk to the food of the children suffering from kwashiorkor saved many lives.

The unbelievable thing about kwashiorkor is that the very existence of the disease—which has been killing thousands of children for centuries—was not even recognized in Latin America as recently as ten years ago. The deaths of those children were mistakenly listed as due to other diseases. It was the WHO’s work in Africa that led to the discovery of the problem in Central America.

A. it has no symptoms at all

B. it is hard to identify signs of it

3.What is mentioned as a simple but reasonable way of curing this disease?

A. Taking a special medicine.

B. Avoiding any food containing starch.

C. Having more meat or milk.

D. Taking medicine full of proteins.

4.What’s the best title for the article?
