You get on an almost-empty bus, but the next passenger decides to ignore all the empty seats to sit right next to you. While you are waiting in line at the supermarket, the next
customer stands just behind you shouting into his phone.
These are attacks of the personal space invaders(侵略者). Though preferences for personal space differ from culture to culture, we Britons do love our independence and personal space.
As the British customs website Debrett has said, as a British person, somebody standing too close may make you “focus less on what somebody is saying than on how close they are to you”. Simple acts like putting an arm around someone you don’t know that well may seem friendly in China, but they can make us very uncomfortable. The ediplomat.com website explains: “The British are not back slappers (拍打者) or touchers and generally do not show affection (喜欢) in public.”
Being a British person around people from other countries can therefore be full of problems. People from many European countries such as France and Spain kiss each other on the cheek when they meet, yet to us this seems too friendly and “touchy-feely”.
Simple matters like how close others stand can be problems to Britons who want to keep their own personal space. Giving advice on how to behave around a British person, Debrett’s says that “if you can feel the warmth of their worried breath upon your face, then you’re standing too close”.
So, are British people unfriendly? No. The ediplomat.com website explains that we are not as “indifferent” as we may seem, but “very friendly and helpful to foreigners”. However, we do have different ideas about our own space to many people from other countries. Just let us know if you’re going to come any closer than arm’s length, and you’ll be fine!
1.What is the article mainly about?
A. How to make friends with British people.
B. Some tips on British table manners.
C. Ways in which British people show affection.
D. British people’s preference for personal space.
2.If you were meeting a British person for the first time, it would be polite of you to ______, according to the article.
A. kiss him/her on the cheek
B. put an arm around him/her
C. keep an arm’s length away from him/her
D. slap his/her back or shake his/her hands
3.The underlined word “indifferent” in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to “_____”.
A. cold B. modest
C. gentlemanlike D. independent
4.What can we conclude from the article?
A. British people like to sit next to others on empty buses.
B. British people are helpful, although they may not appear to be.
C. British people do not like staying with other Europeans.
D. British people are happy to show affection in public.

Two sculptures of life-size lions, each weighing about 5 tons in ancient times, have been discovered in what is now Turkey. The discovery of the massive lions, along with other pieces such as a large stone basin about 7 feet in diameter, left the archaeologists with a mystery ——what were they intended for?
A search of the surrounding area revealed no evidence of a Hittite settlement dating back to the time of the statues. Also, the steep size of the sculptures meant that the sculptors likely did not intend to move them very far.
Summers assumes that, rather than being meant for a palace or a great city, the lions were being created for a monument to mark something else- water
“I think it's highly likely that that monument was going to be associated with one of the very abundant springs that are quite close,” he said in the interview, ”There are good parallels (平行线) for association of Hittite sculptural traditions with water sources”
Indeed one well-known monument site, known as Eflatun Pnar, holds a sacred pool that "is fed by a spring beneath the pool itself,” write Yiit Erbil and Alice Mouton in an article that was published in the most recent edition of the Journal of Near Eastern Studies. The two researchers were writing about water religions in ancient Anatolia (Turkey).
"According to the Hittite cuneiform(楔形文字)texts, water was seen as an effective purifying element,” Erbil and Mouton write, "used in the form of cleaning or even full baths during ritual performances, its cleaning power is self-evident."
To the Hittites the natural world, springs included, was a place of great religious importance, one worthy of monuments with giant lions. "These things (water sources) were sacred, just as their mountains were sacred,” Summers said.
1.According to the text ,how did the two life-size lions impress the archaeologists?
A. Very massive B. Well-constructed
C. Unbelievable D. Mysterious
2.According to Summers' assumption, why were the lions carved ?
A. They were intended to be moved far away,
B. They were used as a monument in honor of their ancestor.
C. They were created as a monument to mark water.
D. They were built to mark their territory.
3.What can be inferred from the text ?
A. Water was highly valued by the Hittites.
B. There was a serious shortage of water in ancient Anatolia
C. Lions were of great religious importance
D. The Hittites used to fight over water resources.
4.What would be the best title of the text ?
A. The Hittite cuneiform
B. What were the lions intended for?
C.A confusing archaeological find
D. Digging up lions

Dear Ms. Wang,
I am writing to inform you of some arrangements about my composition course and Latin course next year.
I’ve decided to re-establish the 5-paragraph essay as the goal for the composition course. I interviewed some of my former students and they all agreed that being able to write critically and continuously was important to them.
So next academic year, Term 1 will be like always: sentences to paragraphing. And Term 2 will work toward the 5-paragraph essay. The final 3 weeks of Term 2 will be reserved to introduce writing for TOEFL and CEE. By that time, if the students have done their job correctly, then they should be able to write quite well.
As for the Latin course, I will post notices around campus next week so that the students will understand what’s on offer before I actually introduce the course. A number of students already emailed me about the course.
I am sure you don’t understand what a big deal our opening this program at our school is. People around the world are interested in what we plan to do. There are many rewards available to the students who succeed in the course. Please share what I have said with the administration. I want them to understand the importance of this course. The reason I have contacted these colleagues (actually Oxford contacted me) is that I have confidence in our students and in myself. I know that when those professors meet our students and hear them speaking and reading Latin, they are going to be amazed. It will open all sorts of doors for students that they never even thought of knocking on.
Well, that’s it for now. I’ll see you soon.
Yours,
Edward Johnson

But what wanghong offer their fans is much more than many pretty pictures. “There is a longing for the effortless of life,” commented China Youth Daily.
Though their lifestyle may seem “effortless”, some wanghong take great pains to run their Taobao stores, communicate with their fans and think of ways to keep their viewership(收视率), for example.
Zhang Dayi, a famous wanghong with over 4 million followers on Sina Weibo, revealed some of her secrets for attracting fans. “Usually people look up to celebrities at a 45-degree angle. In the Pacific Northwest there is a kind of owl (猫头鹰) that serves as a unique piece to the Northwest habitat (栖息地) — the northern spotted owl.
Northern spotted owls are known to be curious. When seeing you, these owls will come down close and check you out.
The northern spotted owl has been a savior of old-growth forests. Old-growth forests are forests that have been around for a long time without significant disturbances. One way the spotted owl has become a protector of old-growth forests is simply by being there. The northern spotted owl has become endangered, and so to protect them from dying out, the government has to protect their habitat. So now any destruction of old-growth forests is illegal. Another way the owls help their habitat is by eating small animals. This helps create a balance in the forest.
So, if the northern spotted owl is in a habitat that is protected by laws, why are they still endangered?
Unfortunately, a cousin of the northern spotted owl has moved into its neighborhood. The bigger, more aggressive “barred owl” has grown in population and due to loss of the forests they lived in on the East Coast of the United States, they have begun to move to the west coast.
These owls are taking the food source and pushing northern spotted owls out of their own home. Although the barred owl is able to live in different habitats, the northern spotted owl can only live in old-growth forests.
Many government officials have been at a loss to find an answer to the difficult question, “What do we do with the non-native barred owls?” Some methods include shooting them. It is a difficult problem to deal with. Can you think of any possible solutions?
1.The northern spotted owl ________.
A. is particular about its food
B. has difficulty adapting to a new habitat
C. seems dangerous and aggressive
D. is a common bird in the USA
2.Old-growth forests seem to ________.
A. become less safe for the owls
B. benefit from northern spotted owls
C. be in danger of dying out
D. regrow at a fast speed
3.Northern spotted owls are in danger mainly because of ________.
A. illegal hunting
B. the destruction of the forests
C. another kind of owl
D. environmental pollution
4.The methods being used to help northern spotted owls are ________.
A. creativeB. far-sightedC. unbearableD. ineffective
