1.A. in case“万一”;B. even if“即使”;C. so that“为了…;结果是…”;D. as if“仿佛,好像”。

2.A. fortunately“幸运地”;B. frequently“时常、经常”;C. impossibly“不可能”; D. Hardly“几乎不”。

4.A. finally“最终”;B. immediately“立即”;C. suddenly“突然”;D. naturally“自然地”。

5.borrowed an Indian style shirt. C. dress.

6.A. talk to“和…谈话”;B. look for“寻找”;C. say hello to“和…打招呼”;D. shake hands with“和… B. look for.

7.A. carefully“仔细地”B. clearly“清晰地”C. completely“完全地”D. easily“容易地”根据本段后半部分出现的,我发现“it was not Kalyani at all”。 Clearly.

8.A. experienced“经历”;B. learned“学到”;C. suffered“遭受苦难”;D. changed“改变”,根据语境,尤其是下一句“She looked a little fat now”(她现在看起来有点胖了),所以,该空填D.changed.(我觉得她“变”了一些)。

故正确答案为A.shook.

10.A. slowed (down)“放慢,减速”;B. looked (down)“俯视”;C. calmed(down)“镇定下来”D. settled down“坐下来;安顿下来”,在该情景中,无论如何我还是“坐了下来”等待着婚礼的仪式。 D. settled down.

11.D. congratulate.(congratulate sb“祝贺某人”)。

C. present.

14.it was not Kalyani at all. D.surprise.

15.A. noisy“嘈杂的、喧闹的”;B. wrong“错误的”C. strange“奇怪的、陌生的”D. splendid“极好的、壮丽的”,根据前一句“…it was not Kalyani at all.

B. hide.

17.A. Otherwise“否则”;B. Moreover“而且”;C. Therefore“所以”;D. The water was cold but I took a shower anyway.

A. waiting.

In every school there is a "top" crowd that sets the pace, while the others follow their lead. For example, the top crowd decides that it is smart to wear bright red sweaters. Very soon everybody is wearing a bright red sweater.

There is nothing wrong with that, except the fact that bright red is not suitable on some people at all.

The situation can even become dangerous, if the top crowd decides that it is smart to drink or to drive cars at 70 miles an hour. Then the people who follow the lead are causing danger to people's lives. They are like sheep being led to the slaughterhouse (屠宰场).

Perhaps you have come across situations like these more than once in your life. In fact, at one time or another you probably did something you knew to be wrong. You may have excused yourself by saying, "The crowd does it." Well, let the crowd do it, but don't do it yourself. Learn to say, "No." Make your own judge (判断). If you know the crowd is planning something with which you disagree, have the courage to leave them politely. You'll have the satisfaction of standing on your own feet.

B. will lose friends

A. in every school there is a "top" crowd that sets the pace

Hurricane Sandy was a hurricane that destroyed parts of the Caribbean and the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern United States during late October 2012, with minor impacts in the Southeastern and Midwestern states and Eastern Canada. Sandy, classified as the eighteenth named storm and tenth hurricane of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season, was a Category 2 storm at its peak intensity. While it was a Category 1 storm off the coast of the Northeastern United States, the storm became the largest Atlantic hurricane on record. Previous estimates of losses due to damage and business interruption are estimated at $65.6 billion, which would make it the second-costliest Atlantic hurricane, behind only Hurricane Katrina. At least 253 people were killed along the path of the storm in eight countries.

Sandy developed from a tropical wave in the western Caribbean Sea on October 22, quickly strengthened, and was upgraded to Tropical Storm six hours later. Sandy moved slowly northward toward the Greater Antilles and gradually becoming stronger. On October 24, Sandy became a hurricane, made landfall near Kingston, Jamaica, a few hours later, entered into the Caribbean Sea again and strengthened into a Category 2 hurricane. On October 25, Sandy hit Cuba, and then weakened to a Category 1 hurricane. Early on October 26, Sandy moved through the Bahamas. On October 27, Sandy briefly weakened to a tropical storm and then restrengthened to a Category 1 hurricane. Early on October 29, Sandy turned from north to northwest and then moved ashore near Atlantic City, New Jersey, as a post-tropical cyclone with hurricane-force winds.

In the United States, Hurricane Sandy affected 24 states, including the entire eastern seaboard from Florida to Maine and west across the Appalachian Mountains to Michigan and Wisconsin, with particularly severe damage in New Jersey and New York. Its storm hit New York City on October 29, flooding streets, tunnels and subway lines and cutting power in and around the city. Damage in the US is estimated at over $63 billion.

1.According to the passage, which of the following wind forms is the strongest?

A. Tropical wave. B. Tropical storm.

C. Category 1 hurricane. D. Category 2 hurricane.

2.We can learn from the passage that_______.

A. Sandy caused 253 deaths totally in the USA.

B. Sandy reached its strongest in the Caribbean Sea.

C. Sandy resulted in great loss in most states in the USA.

D. Sandy is the second largest Atlantic hurricane ever recorded.

3.Which of the following graph shows the development of Sandy?

A. B. C. D.

4.What is the writer’s purpose of writing this passage?

A. To tell us how terrible Sandy is.

B. To teach us what to do in face of hurricanes.

C. To inform readers of Sandy and its damage.

D. To warn readers of the dangers caused by hurricanes.
