I will never forget the Christmas I spent in Germany a few years ago.

My family bitterly opposed us when my brother and I said ¡¾1¡¿ were going to spend the Christmas holidays abroad. But nothing could persuade us ¡¾2¡¿ (stay). Two days ¡¾3¡¿ Christmas, we went to a small town in Southern Germany. We spent ¡¾4¡¿ whole Christmas Eve sightseeing.

There were so many activities in the town that they added to our ¡¾5¡¿ (excite). The streets were crowded with people, ¡¾6¡¿ the shops were full of wonderful things. In the evening, we went to listen to Christmas songs sung by children around the ¡¾7¡¿ (bright) decorated Christmas tree in the main street. We returned to our hotel late that night, greatly ¡¾8¡¿ (look) forward to the next day when we planned to have a meal at the best restaurant in town. But in the morning the streets were empty. To make matters worse, all the shops including the restaurants ¡¾9¡¿ (shut). At last we had to return to our hotel, feeling very miserable(ÐÄÇéÔã¸âµÄ). Our Christmas ¡°feast¡± was a bag of fruits, which my brother had happened to buy the day before. Our thoughts sadly turned to home, ¡¾10¡¿ the entire family must have been wishing us a ¡°Merry Christmas¡± at that moment.

Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, Akashi Strait, Japan

It took 10 years to construct the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge. It connects the city of Kobe, on Japan¡¯s mainland, with Iwaya on Awaji Island. Before it opened, the only way to get between the two cities was by ferry. However, the waterway was at the mercy of severe storms and when two ferries overturned in 1955, killing 168 people, public anger convinced the government of the need for a bridge. It's the longest suspension bridge in the world, with a length of 1,991 meters.

Panama Canal, Panama

More than 4. 5 million cubic yards of concrete were used in the construction of this canal¡¯s locks and dams. The Panama Canal is a 47-mile long waterway that connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The earth and rubble dug to make way for it was enough to bury Manhattan to a depth of four meters. A series of locks allows ships to pass through the water. Each lock door weighs 750 tons and each lock fills with 52 million gallons of water to accommodate the 15,000 ships that use the canal every year.

Grand Canyon Skywalk, Arizona

The Skywalk¡¯s foundation is strong enough to support 71 million pounds , Located 1,219 meters above the Colorado River, the Grand Canyon's Sky Walk consists of one million pounds of steel and 83,000 pounds of glass. It was the creation of Las Vegas businessman David Jin, who approached the Hualapai Tribe with the idea of a glass walkway over the Grand Canyon in 1996. The Sky walk was assembled on site.

How to make friends

Choosing friends

Before you make friends, you have to decide who you want to be your friends. Most people like to have friends who like to do the same kind of things as they do.That doesn¡¯t mean you have to be exactly like each other, just that you enjoy some of the same things.Think about your favorite things to do and try to talk to your classmates at lunch or rest about your hobbies. You are sure to find at least one person who¡¯s excited about the same things that excite and interest you, too.

Making friends

¡ñThe quickest way to make a friend is to smile. When you smile, people think you are friendly and easy to talk to.It may not be easy at first to smile. But you can practice smiling in front of a mirror. When you look at yourself in the mirror, think if you¡¯d rather talk to your smiling face or your usual scared or angry face.

¡ñOne easy way to start a conversation with someone is to say something nice about them.Think about how great you feel when someone says something nice to you.Doesn¡¯t it make you want to talk to him?

¡ñAsk your new friends questions about themselves. It¡¯s the only way to get to know what they¡¯re like and it¡¯s the only way they¡¯ll know that you are interested in them.

¡ñMake sure you have something to add to the conversation, too. When someone asks you a question,do have an answer for them. There is nothing that will stop a conversation quicker than a shrug(Ëʼç) for an answer.

Activities

After you¡¯ve made a friend who shares the same interests with you,it¡¯s always fun to plan activities together that you¡¯ll both enjoy.Inviting a friend to your house after school is a great way to make your friendship closer.

If you know a game your friend likes to play, you can plan to do that together. When you play a computer game, one person is always left sitting with nothing to do but watch. Not fun.

¡¾1¡¿Before you make friends with someone, make sure .

A.both of you are exactly like each other

B.both of you enjoy some of the same interests

C.you have talked to him or her at lunch or rest about your hobbies

D.you have little in common with each other

¡¾2¡¿When you want to make friends with someone, you should do all the following except .

A.smiling at him or her before talking

B.starting a conversation first

C.asking some questions about him or her

D.giving a shrug instead of an answer

¡¾3¡¿To make your friendship last long,you shouldn¡¯t .

A.do something that interests both of you together

B.invite your friend to your house at weekends

C.be always doing something by yourself with your friend left doing nothing

D.play basketball together in your free time

Ask someone what they have done to help the environment recently and they will almost certainly mention recycling.Recycling in the home is very important of course. However, being forced to recycle often means we already have more material than we need.We are dealing with the results of that overconsumption in the greenest way,but it would be far better if we did not need to bring so much material home in the first place.

The total amount of packaging increased by 12% between 1999 and 2005.It now makes up a third of a typical household¡¯s waste in the UK.In many supermarkets nowadays food items are packaged twice with plastic and cardboard.

Too much packaging is doing serious damage to the environment. The UK,for example,is running out of it for carrying this unnecessary waste. If such packaging is burnt,it gives off greenhouse gases which go on to cause the greenhouse effect.Recycling helps, but the process itself uses energy. The solution is not to produce such items in the first place.Food waste is a serious problem, too.Too many supermarkets encourage customers to buy more than they need. However,a few of them are coming round to the idea that this cannot continue and encouraging customers to reuse their plastic bags.

But this is not just about supermarkets. It is about all of us.We have learned to associate packaging with quality. We have learned to think that something unpackaged is of poor quality. This is especially true of food. But it also applies to a wide range of consumer products, which often have far more packaging than necessary.

There are signs of hope.As more of us recycle,we are beginning to realize just how much unnecessary material we are collecting. We need to face the wastefulness of our consumer culture, but we have a mountain to climb.

¡¾1¡¿The author uses figures in Paragraph 2 to show .

A.the tendency of cutting household waste

B.the increase of packaging recycling

C.the rapid growth of supermarkets

D.the fact of packaging overuse

¡¾2¡¿According to the text,recycling .

A.helps control the greenhouse effect

B.means burning packaging for energy

C.is the solution to gas shortage

D.leads to a waste of land

¡¾3¡¿What can be inferred from Paragraph 4?

A.Unpackaged products are of bad quality.

B.Supermarkets care more about packaging.

C.It is improper to judge quality by packaging.

D.Other products are better packaged than food.

¡¾4¡¿What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A.Fighting wastefulness is difficult.

B.Needless material is mostly recycled.

C.People like collecting recyclable waste.

D.The author is proud of their consumer culture.

¡¾ÌâÄ¿¡¿When I was in primary school, sometimes I would meet a girl of the same age as me. Lisa was never active, but she was always very sweet and nice. In the 5th grade she came to my class. She was absent a lot, and one day I had the courage to ask why. She told me she was sick, and she explained she wore a wig (¼Ù·¢)because her medicine made her lose her hair. Since then, anytime Lisa came to class, I would hang around with her on the playground.

I received much ridicule (³°Ð¦)from my friends for this because they thought I was ignoring them for Lisa. My family education taught me to be nice, and I felt Lisa¡¯s needs were much more important than others I knew.

It had been months since Lisa was in our class, and one day our teacher was crying. She explained Lisa died the day before and would no longer be our classmate. She told us Lisa had fought a battle (¶·Õù) with cancer for years.

I was shocked. Lisa never spoke of her illness as if it could kill her. Well, all these years I have kept Lisa in my mind and heart. When I go through the important events in my life, I think of Lisa.

I¡¯ve had a strong wish recently to find her mother and father. I¡¯d like to tell them that though they never met me, their daughter had a sweet effect on my life. I have no idea what her parents¡¯ first names are. I write to your column (רÀ¸) and hope you can point me in the right direction.

Lisa was such a lovely girl. Maybe her parents would be comforted by the fact that after all these years they are not the only ones who remember her.

¡¾1¡¿Why was the author being laughed at?

A. Because she wore a wig to school.

B. Because she always played with Lisa.

C. Because she cried in the classroom.

D. Because she lost her friends because of Lisa.

¡¾2¡¿What can we know about the author from the passage?

A. She had known Lisa since they were born.

B. She has been to Lisa¡¯s house.

C. She has a good family education.

D. She was the first one to know about Lisa¡¯s death.

¡¾3¡¿What did the author learn from Lisa?

A. To keep your illness a secret.

B. To be nice to everyone everywhere.

C. To face challenges in life bravely.

D. To put others¡¯ needs above yours.

¡¾4¡¿The author wrote this passage mainly to .
