One day a man found a cocoon(茧)of a butterfly in the forest. He sat there for several hours and watched the butterfly. Suddenly a small opening appeared, and the butterfly made its great effort to force its body through that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could and it could go no further.

So the man decided to help the butterfly. He cut off the remaining bit of the cocoon so that the butterfly could come out easily. But to his surprise, the butterfly got a heavy body and very small wings when it came out of the cocoon.

The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that the body would grow smaller at any moment and the wings would become larger and be able to fly. But neither happened. In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling(爬)around with a heavy body and small wings. It was never able to fly.

The man was in his kindness, but he did not understand the nature rules. Before the butterfly came out of the cocoon, fluid(流体)from its body must be forced into its wings, and then it would be ready for flying. It must have a hard struggle to get through the small opening to get its freedom from the cocoon.

Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our life. If God allowed us to go through our life without any difficulties, it would make us fail. We would not be as strong as we could have been; we could never fly.

1.What was the butterfly doing at the beginning of the story?

AIt was trying to make a cocoon for itself.

BIt was struggling to get out of its cocoon.

CIt was flying among the trees in the forest.

DIt was crawling around quietly on the ground.

2.The man cut off the remaining bit of the cocoon .

Ato take the butterfly home

Bto help the butterfly come out easily

Cto kill the butterfly

Dto stop the butterfly growing bigger

3.What do you think of the man?

Apatient but cruel Bcareful and wise Ckind but unwise Dbrave and funny

4.What does the last paragraph tell us?

AStruggles are sometimes necessary in our life

BNothing is difficult if we put our heart into it

CEvery good deed will come back with a good result

DThe greatest happiness in the world is to help others

5.What is the best title for the story?

AThe love for the cocoon. BThe joy of helping each other

CThe lesson of the cocoon DThe expectation for the butterfly

根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Ten years ago, I used to be very fit. __1.__ I used to play tennis a lot and go for long walks. In those days, I didn’t earn very much. I had a job in an office. It wasn’t a very good job but I had a lot of time to do the things I enjoyed doing.

__2.__ The pay was better, but the hours were a lot longer. I bought a car and drove to work every day. I began to take people out to lunch. And I began to put on weight, too. I stopped playing tennis and going for long walks at weekends because I just didn’t have any time for things like that any more.

There’s a lot of stress (压力) in my job. Perhaps that’s why I started drinking more than I used to. For example, I used to have only half a glass of whisky when I got home, but then I started filling my glass to the top. Then I had another glass, and then another. __ 3.__ I never used to smoke at all.

Two months ago, I had a heart attack. At first I just couldn’t believe it. “I’m too young.” I said. Luckily it wasn’t very serious. I was in hospital a few days and they did a lot of tests. __4.__ He also advised me to work less and get more exercise. But I just haven’t any time! __5.__

Sometimes I wonder if I should get another job. Perhaps I could do something like I used to do. But if I do that, I won’t earn as much. I have a family to support. I have to think of them, too. I just don’t know what I should do. What do you think?

A. Then, about eight years ago, I got a much better job.

B. My job takes everything out of me!

C. I rode a bike to work and I got a lot of exercise at weekends.

D. Drinking became part of my life.

E. I started smoking a lot, too.

F. Ten years later, I lost my first job.

G. The doctor advised me to stop smoking and to eat less.
