A Writing Kind of Day:  Poems for Young Poets by Ralph Fletcher is an unusual book.On one hand,  it is an interesting,   sometimes heartbreaking and often enjoyable,   collection of poems written in the voice
of a boy in middle school who enjoys writing poetry. One the other hand,   it is a book of poetry for teens
about the creative process of writing poetry. The book contains 27 poems,   one per page. The poetry itself focuses on family,   middle school,   worries,   and writing. The book covers a number of different
topics-from the serious,   like his grandmother's increasing loss of memory,   to the very funny.
While the book can be enjoyed just as an interesting book of poetry,   it also provides a lot of
information and inspiration that will be helpful to young poets.Fletcher's poems about writing show the
boy's great interest in writing,   his love of words,   and his constant search for ideas. In the poem,
"Poetry Recipe",   the boy writes about trying to write a poem using the recipe,   suggested by his friend
and finding that it doesn't work for him;   he needs his own ingredients.
A Writing Kind of Day is suitable for young teens who enjoy reading poetry or who want to write
poetry. It mentions a lot of things,   such as homework,   aging relatives,   tests,   which middle schoolers
deal with. And it would be an excellent book to use in a middle school language arts classroom to show
how easily poetry can be reached. Finally,   middle school boys who are reluctant (勉强的)readers might
enjoy reading it because the book is far shorter than a traditional novel.

Edinburgh is one of Scotland's two big cities, the capital. It is affectionately known and has enormous
historical significance. Situated on the east coast of Scotland, Edinburgh proudly offers a window to past.
Indeed Edinburgh has been Scotland's royal city since 1437. Most of Edinburgh's sights are contained within
two districts: the old town and the contrasting new town. The largely medieval Royal Mile which stretches
for a statute (法定的)mile and the 107 yards from Edinburgh Castle to the Palace of Hollyroodhouse, dominates
the city's central area. The Royal Mile has been quoted as being: The largest, longest and finest street for
buildings and density of inhabitants, not only in Britain, but in the world.
To millions of visitors, Edinburgh Castle is a must see because there are many treasures. Princess Street
is located in Edinburgh's new town directly below the castle. Next to Princess Street, in the shadow of
Edinburgh Castle lies the broad green Princess Street Gardens. This is one of the most delightful gardens I
have even visited.
Another marvelous site to visit is Calton Hill. I sat for hours on it, just happy to breathe the fresh air.

Parsley (欧芹)  is an ancient green and a respected addition to many foods. But at other times, its
job is just to make a mealtime plate look pretty. Poor parsley, valued for its looks, then is thrown away.
Yet parsley is a good source of vitamins and other nutrients. The taste is a little strong for some people,
but others chew on parsley to freshen their breath.
Curly parsley is the king that often ends up being used just for appearance. Flatleaf parsley is easier
to work with for cooking. This kind is often called Italian or French parsley. Do you know about a third
kind of parsley? Hamburg parsley has flat leaves that can be used for the same purposes as other parsley. But hamburg parsley has a large root which is used as a vegetable to add flavor to soups.
Parsley is used in foods such as tabouli, a traditional Lebanese salad and is often served with lamb,
fish and beef dishes. Parsley is a herb if you use just the greens. If the root is used, then parsley is
considered a vegetable.
Some gardeners suggest that to get the besttasting parsley, you should plant new seeds every year.
You can get parsley to grow faster by pouring warm water over the seeds. Leave the seeds in the water
overnight. Then you can grow them in containers indoors or plant them outside. Parsley grows best when
temperatures are below twentyone degrees Celsius. It likes to grow in sunny places. The seeds need rich
soil. Plant the seeds about fifteen to twentyfive centimeters apart. Water them regularly during the first
month. After that, parsley does not need very much water. You can harvest parsley by cutting most of
the plant or leave more of the plant in the ground for a second crop.
1. From the passage we can learn that________.
A. people don't like parsley's strong taste at all
B. people don't attach great importance to parsley's value
C. parsley has been widely planted in the world
D. only ancient people used parsley as an addition
2. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A. The Planting of Parsley
B. To Parsley's Regret
C. Parsley
D. The Use of Parsley
3. It seems________to the writer that parsley is valued for its looks.
A. regretful
B. unbelievable
C. confusing
D. doubtful
4. The last paragraph mainly deals with________.
A. how to use parsley

I paid a visit to Cambridge last January.  Though the trip took me 5 hours and it rained the whole day
with strong winds there, the town deserved a visit.
The bus started at 6:10 a. m. It stopped at 4 airports before we finally arrived, which wasted more
time than we expected. Tired with long sitting, one passenger stood up to relax his numbed legs. The
driver asked him to sit down but in vain. So he pulled up and said seriously, "Either you get off or sit
down. "To him, safety is the first policy.
Cambridge consists of nearly thirty colleges.  The oldest part of the university was built in the 13th
century while the newest was founded in the mid 1960s. The number of the students is so great that many
students live in lodgings(出租房)and move into college for their final year.
Cambridge is called a university town because there is no clear separation between the university
buildings and the rest of the city. The university is not just one part of the town; it is all over the town. The
heart of Cambridge has shops, pubs, and supermarkets, but most of it is university-colleges, departments,
libraries, clubs and other places for university staff and students. Students fill the shops, cafes, banks and
churches, making these as well part of the university.
With over 10, 000 undergraduates and postgraduates, the town is a busy place indeed. Students here
are not allowed to keep cars. If you happen to be walking in the street during a break, better stop a
moment to avoid the boiling sea of bicycles hurrying in all directions, carrying students from one college or
lecture room to another.

1. The writer believed that the trip took more time because of________

A. bad weather
B. unexpected stops of the bus
C. one passenger
D. an accident on the way

2. Why is Cambridge called a university town?

A. It has 10, 000 undergraduates and postgraduates.
B. There are nearly thirty colleges in the town.
C. All the students and staff live in the town.
D. The university and town are fully combined.

3. It can be inferred that most Cambridge students take________as their first means of transport.

A. boats
B. cars
C. bicycles
D. buses

For five days, Edmonton's Downtown Park is transformed into one huge stage where artists are
able to share their talents, and where people are able to celebrate and enjoy themselves. Since its
beginning in 1980, the Edmonton Folk Music Festival has been commemorating(纪念) the true
feeling of what folk music is all about and that's the traditional togetherness(友爱) that is felt when
people gather to share stories and feelings through song.
This year will be the sixth year when volunteer Riedel will be offering up her time to the festival.
"People coming off a busy spring and summer have a moment of relaxation," Riedel said."It's really
easy to relax,  and it's great seeing family and friends have fun together." These families and friends
come from all different kinds of musical tastes. People who take pleasure in Blues are there, so are
people who love Bluegrass. This festival does its best to develop everyone's musical interests.
With so many years of experience, the festival has become a welloiled machine, and does whatever
it can to make attendees feel as comfortable as possible. There are free water stations throughout the
venue(举办地)for people to fill up their travel cups. When people buy food, reusable dishes are given
a $2 plate fee, but that is returned when the plate is brought back.
The festival has completely sold out of tickets,  and in record time. But with big names such as Van
Morrison and Jakob Dylan,  it's easy to see how that was going to happen. There is no parking area
during the festival, so using the Park & Ride system or Edmonton Transit is highly recommended. A
bike lockup area is provided and will be available Thursday until Sunday one hour before the gates
open until 45 minutes after the gates close.
The Edmonton Folk Music Festival begins on Wednesday, Aug. 4 with Van Morrison playing the
special donation fund(基金) concert,  and will finish up on Sunday, Aug. 8.
