Choosing the right job is probably one of the most important decisions we have to make in life, and it
is frequently one of the hardest decisions we have to make.
1 There are people who can answer an insignificant(无关紧要) advertisement in the local paper and
land the best job in the world; others writes to all sorts of places, and never seem to get a reply at all,and
then there are those who, through no active decision of their own, just seem to be in the right place at the
right time.  2  He used to spend a lot of his free time down by the sea watching the tall ships, but never
thinking that he might one day sail one of them. One day, on his usual wandering, he heard the captain of
a ship complaining that he could not sail because one member of his crew was sick. Without stopping to
think, the young man offered to take his place.  3
This story also illustrates the importance of seizing an opportunity when it presents itself. If the young
man had gone home to ponder(考虑) his decision for a week, he might have missed his chance. It is one
thing to be offered an opportunity.  4
Sometimes we hear stories about people who break all rules and still seem to land the well-paid jobs. When you go for a jod interview or fill out an application, you are expected to say nice things about the
company to which you are applying.   5  And within a year this person had become general manager of
the company.
A. But there was one person who landed an excellent job by telling the interviewer all the company's
faults.
B. It is very important to seize an opportunity when it presents itself.

More than one million children in the United States do not go to school. Instead, they learn at home.
They are taught by adults, like tutors (家庭教师).  1  Educational companies, libraries, and the Internet
provide many families with teaching material.
2  Some choose it because of their religious beliefs. Others say it provides more time for the family
to be together. They say home offers a better place for learning. Some parents believe home-schooling
avoids problems of traditional schools. These include classes that have too many students. Critics,
however, say children need to attend school with other children.
They also say that some home-schooled children do not get a good education.  3  Some states(州)
do not require much preparation made by parents or testing of children. Other states have more
requirements for home-schooling. Home-schooling in the United States began when the country was
established. In farm areas, people often lived far from a school. Widespread home-schooling took place
until about the middle of the 19th century. Then, in 1852, the state of Massachusetts passed the first law
    requiring children to attend school.
Over the years, the American public education system strengthened and grew. By the 1960s and
1970s, however, some Americans believed that traditional education was not helping their children.   4
Home-schooling expert Linda Dobson says many people have helped the movement grow. She says
some parents began teaching their children at home after changes in tax laws forced some private religious schools to close. That happened in the 1980s. And, most recently, she says many kinds of people have
joined the movement.  5  They represent many races, religions and political beliefs. Ms. Dobson says the
number of home-schooled children has increased by an estimated fifteen to twenty percent each year
    during the last fifteen years.

    A. So a number of parents began home-schooling.
    B. They are mainly rich people.
    C. However, all fifty American states and the District of Columbia permit home-schooling.
    D. She says these include rich people and poor people.
    D. Home-schooling is not accepted by all the people.
    E. Parents choose home-schooling for several reasons.
    F. Most often, their parents are their teachers.

                                                         The Meanings of Dreams
Sleep and dreams have interested people for centuries. Scientists are learning more about sleep, but
they still know very little about why we dream.
1   First, we have most of our dreams during REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. At this time, the
brain is very active. Second, everyone dreams - even if we cannot remember doing so when we awaken.
2   While we are asleep, it works more slowly and sometimes puts our thoughts and memories together
    in strange ways.
3   Some believe that our dreams are associated with thoughts and feelings that we experience
while we are awake. Many dream researchers think that a dream about death, for example, is really
about an important life change.    4   Dreams about a car or travel often represent feelings about your
own life. Dreams about teeth - especially broken or loose ones may indicate stress and fear. Dreams in
which you are flying often represent freedom or escape.
Researchers think people in our dreams can tell us something about ourselves. If the person in the
dream was yelling (叫喊), for example, maybe you are angry.    5
There is still a lot about dreaming that we do not understand. By learning more about our dreams, we
    may learn more about ourselves.

    A. Dreams may be more important than sleep.
    B. Scientists do not know for certain why we dream.
    C. If he or she was terrified, then maybe you are afraid of something.
    D. Modern research can tell us some important things about dreams.
    E. There are three things you should pay attention to to have a sweet dream.
    F. Finally, a part of our brain helps us to understand daily experiences we have.
    G. Dreams about telephones are thought to be about giving or receiving an important message.

No fight can end, and no friendship can move on, until everyone says these little words: I'm sorry.
Sometimes, though, they can be difficult to say,  1  .
         It's not about winning.
Friendships aren't like the Super Bowl, and there should never be a winner and a loser. When you start
fighting with a friend, it may feel important that you "win" the fight by proving you're right and he is wrong, or by making him be the first to apologize.
            2
You may have heard the expression "His pride stood in the way." It is usually used to describe a
person who is so determined to be"right"that he lets an opportunity for happiness pass him by forever.
3   Remember: as time goes on, we usually forget who was right and who was wrong in a disagreement, and only remember the sadness of losing a friend.
       Take the first step.
Are you sick of fighting? Do you think this fight is just not important enough to ruin your friendship?
4   You don't have to take full responsibility for starting the fight, or even say that your feelings were
wrong. But you should find something you did or said that's worth apologizing for. Maybe you're sorry
that you let the fight go for so long, of that you overreacted(反应过度的) to something your friend did.
If you say you are sorry, it's like an invitation for your friend to do the same.      5

    A. Then try to be the first to apologize.
    B. Stop thinking about your pride.
C .It's about taking some resposibility for the argument.
    D. Don't let this happen to a friendship you care about.
    E. Here are some things to keep in mind.
    F. There are some special cases when you shouldn't be the one to apologize first.
    G. Once you've both said it, you'll both feel a million times better.

Shoppers who carefully plan their visit to the grocery store  can save money on their grocery bills.
    __1__
Shoppers should visit the grocery store on a full stomach  by scheduling their trip immediately after a
large meal. If that's not possible, they should find something healthy to eat while preparing a grocery list.
      __2__
Although having a list and sticking to it is the most important factor in saving money, shoppers must
prepare lists wisely in order to save.   _3_ Many special buys are announced  through the local
newspapers, so buying the "grocery issue" is  worth the investment(投资). However, it's important to
remember that many newer, more expensive products first offered  through coupons(优惠券) may not
yield enough savings for shoppers to  give up the product they usually buy.
_4__ Once at the store, the shopper who wants to save  money should follow a few more rules. The
shopper should not stay longer than necessary, because bills go up each minute the shopper is in the store. So, setting a time limit and a cost limit can hold down the bill.   __5_  If the grocery list is a short one,
some shoppers choose to use the small handheld basket instead of the roomy grocery cart.
    A. A carefully planned list should include in season produce and any items on sale or discounted through
    coupons.
    B. Of course, the shopper should stick strictly to the shopping list and resist the temptation to buy
    additional items.
    C. People who are full are less tired and more likely to buy what they want.

    F. Most shoppers are less persuaded to buy extra goods when they are not hungry.
    G. Shopping when not hungry, sticking to a grocery list, and following a few simple rules will
