    17．What's black and orange and growing for the first time in decades？India's tiger population!On Monday，officials announced the results of the latest tiger count．The census（统计） totaled 1，706tigers in forests across the Asian country-about 300more than four years ago．"These numbers give us hope for the future of tigers in the world，"said Jim Leape，international director of the World Wildlife Fund．
    A century ago，about 100，000tigers lived in India's forests．But by 2002，a count showed that there were only 3，600left．The number dropped to 1，411in 2007．What caused India's tiger population to shrink so dramatically？
    More than anything else，experts say，development has taken a toll．People have moved into tiger territory and destroyed much of the animal's habitat．Today，tigers live on a just small part of the land they occupied 100years ago．
    Illegal hunting has also contributed to the decline．Poachers（盗猎者） can demand high fees for tiger parts，which are a key ingredient in traditional Chinese medicine．The parts from one tiger can sell for tens of thousands of dollars．
    India's news is a step in the right direction．But while the number of tigers has increased there in the last four years，the animals'habitat has shrunk．Roads and construction projects have blocked off many tiger corridors-routes used by the big cats to go from one forest to another．"Securing these corridors should be taken up as a priority，"says Rajesh Gopal，of the National Tiger Conservation Authority．
    Last November，leaders from the 13countries that are home to wild tigers met in St．Petersburg，Russia，to develop a plan to help the endangered cats．They set a goal to double the world's tiger population by the year 2022．Will we reach that goal？With India's tiger population on the rise and conservationists around the world focused on helping the big cats，it seems it just might happen．

    5．Parents are often amazed at how fast their child grows and develops．New research has determined that the ability to quantify may develop much sooner than most parents realize．
    Kristy vanMarle，professor of the University of Missouri，has determined that contrary to what previous studies have shown，infants（婴儿）are able to quantify substances（物质）-like sand or water-as early as 10months．As long as the difference between the two substances is large enough，infants will choose the larger amount，especially when it comes to food．

    "Several studies throughout the last 15years have shown that infants are very good at telling how many objects they see； however，infants don't seem to count things like water or sand，"vanMarle said．"What we're saying is that they can quantify substances； it's just much harder．The infants can see how much food goes into each cup and compare that in their memories．They decide which amount is larger，and they almost always select the larger one．"

    12．Poverty is not first thing that comes to mind when you think of Japan．After all，there are no children begging on the streets in major cities here．You do not often see Japanese citizens publicly letting out their complaints over the country's economic decline．But senior government researcher Aya Abe says Japan has the fourth highest rate of child poverty among developed countries．
    She says she sees that poverty in schools where students admit to only bathing once a week．Some cannot afford to buy pencils for class．
    "They may not be on the streets begging or they may not be turning into criminals，but it's there．It's just that we have to open our eyes and see，"Abe said．
    Abe owes the increase in child poverty to the country's changing demographics（人口统计），struggling economy and high social security premiums（保险费）．She says fewer people live in three-generation households，where the parents and grandparents work．The number of single mothers has increased．The salary for young fathers has declined with the economic downturn．Social security premiums have increased in the last 20years，putting families on the edge of poverty．
    Abe says studies conducted by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development （OECD ） point to rising poverty in Japan before the global economic crises in 2008．But the Japanese government and the public refused to acknowledge it until then partly because of the shame associated with poverty．
    "It was very unpopular for Japanese media to say anything about Japanese poverty，"said Abe．"Even though OECD Japan announced it in Japanese，Japanese media didn't make it into the articles．"
    Abe says new Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama has taken one important step to help alleviate （缓解） the problem．Next year，his Democratic Party of Japan plans to double monthly child care allowances given to families．
    But Abe wants the government to expand its financial help even more．She wants it to simplify the process to apply for public assistance and provide educational grants for students struggling to pay for tuition at high schools and colleges．The country now only offers loans．
    Abe also says the government must act quickly because she says the problem will only get worse in the next few years．
