¡¾´ð°¸¡¿Dear Mr. Craige,

I¡¯m willing to tell you something about the 10th English Speaking Contest I took part in last week in our school.

I got the ¡°Top Ten Prize¡± out of 30 competitors, which was totally beyond my imagination. When I heard the final result, I couldn¡¯t believe my ears and jumped with joy.

It¡¯s because of your effort that I have made such rapid progress in my spoken English. Before the contest, whenever you had free time, you would help me practice my spoken English. Besides, you communicated with me as much as possible, and corrected my pronunciation, intonation as well. What¡¯s more, you taught me some helpful speaking skills and made me full of confidence. Without your help, I wouldn¡¯t have achieved such a good result. Also, I have benefited a lot from this competition. All in all, I really appreciate your help.

Thank you again for your advice and kind help. I sincerely invite you to my home for dinner and have a good time.

Yours

Li Hua

¡¾ÌâÄ¿¡¿Homework is a good thing. It helps you practice what you¡¯ve learned during the day and establish study habits that will be important in college. ¡¾1¡¿ What you need to do is take control of your homework.

Set a good mood for studying.

Create a good study area with all the things you will need (for example, a dictionary, pens and textbooks).

Know where to start in your study.

Make a list of everything you need to do in order so you cannot use ¡°I don¡¯t know where to start.¡± as an excuse. Don¡¯t over-schedule yourself. ¡¾2¡¿ Study at the same time every day.

Even if you don¡¯t have homework, use the time to review your notes. ¡¾3¡¿ What¡¯s more, you¡¯ll become good at using time in this way.

¡¾4¡¿

Do you ever feel like you cannot stay awake to read something? Keep your mind from wandering by taking notes, underlining sentences, discussing topics with others.

Celebrate your achievements.

¡¾5¡¿ However, if you have some problems about the amount or type of the homework, you should talk to your teachers.

A. Take advantage of your time.

B. Get more involved in your study.

C. Try to find the best methods that work for you.

D. If you do that, it will be easy for you to fail to stick to your study plan.

E. Once you achieve your goal, offer yourself some reward for it.

F. It can also help you prepare for your classes and get a sense of progress.

G. If you accept homework as part of your day, you¡¯ll deal with in more easily.

¡¾ÌâÄ¿¡¿Everyone makes mistakes. ¡¾1¡¿. Making a mistake at work, however, can be more serious. It may cause problems for your employer and even affect the company¡¯s bottom line. Evil consequences will finally come down to you. Simply correcting your mistake and moving on may not be an option. When you make a mistake at work, your career may depend on what you do next.

Admit your mistake.

Tell your boss about your mistake immediately. The only exception is that you make an insignificant error that will not affect anyone. Otherwise, don¡¯t try to hide your mistake. ¡¾2¡¿.

Present your boss with a plan to fix your mistake.

When you go to your boss to admit your mistake, you must have a plan for correcting it. Present your plan clearly. Tell your boss how long it will take to carry out your plan and if there are any costs involved.

Don¡¯t blame anyone else for your mistake.

¡¾3¡¿. Encourage those who may share responsibility to follow your lead in admitting to your boss.

¡¾4¡¿.

There¡¯s a big difference between admitting your mistake and beating yourself up about it. Take responsibilitybut don¡¯t blame yourself for making it, especially in public.

Correct your mistake on your own time.

If you have to spend extra hours at work to correct your mistake, don¡¯t expect to be paid for that time. ¡¾5¡¿.

A. You can use your lunch hour or come into work early

B. You will look terrible if someone else discovers it

C. Apologize for your mistake but don¡¯t beat yourself up

D. Pointing fingers won¡¯t help you if you make a mistake

E. Strengthen your friendship with your boss

F. You¡¯ll feel ashamed if your colleague takes the responsibility for you

G. Usually you can correct your error or just forget about it and move on

When I¡¯m in the trouble, I always take out a book and read quiet. Soon I¡¯ll forget all the troubles. It is in this way which I¡¯ve formed the habit of read at any time. As a boy, I was interesting in picture books and storybooks. I was attracted them. After I entered middle school I begin to read novels, plays, essays and so on. I found I could get many from them. Little by little I took greatly interest in literature but last term I won first prize in the composition contest among middle-school students in our city.

I was thinking about helping her when a man come up to comfort her. Then he bought her a ticket with his own money. The old Lady was so moving that she could hardly say a word. She grasped his hand and asked for his name or address. But he only smile and said, ¡°It¡¯s my pleasure.¡± Then he left away quickly. ¡¾ÌâÄ¿¡¿E-mail systems at thousands of companies and government offices around the world were attacked by a virus(²¡¶¾)called ¡°Melissa¡± that disguises(αװ)itself as an ¡°important message¡±from a friend. In spite of a weekend of warnings£¬more than 50 000 computers at about 100 places around the world have been attacked by the virus£¬computer security experts said on Monday.

The virus began to show up last Friday and spread rapidly on Monday by making computers fire off dozens of infected(±»´«È¾µÄ)e-mails. Although the virus causes no serious damage to a computer£¬its effect was far reaching.

To make matters worse£¬a similar virus called ¡°Papa¡± was discovered on Monday. Papa is programmed to send out even more infected e-mails than Melissa.

The Melissa virus comes in the form of an e-mail£¬usually containing the subject line¡°Important Message¡±. It appears to be from a friend. The body of the e-mail message says£¬¡°Here is that document you asked for...,don¡¯t show it to anyone else.¡± Attached(¸½)to the message is a document file.

Once the user opens that file£¬the virus digs into the user¡¯s address book and sends infected documents to the first 50 addresses. E-mails from the Papa virus include an attached spreadsheet(µç×ÓÊý¾ÝÎļþ)file. When the user opens that file£¬the virus sends 60 infected e-mails.

The reason why this is spreading so fast is that you are getting it from people you know. You should never open documents or attachments from people you don¡¯t know. People who get an unexpected e-mail with the ¡°important message¡± subject line should delete it immediately and not open the message.

¡¾1¡¿Thousands of computers were attacked by the Melissa virus _______________.

A. covered with an important message

B. under cover of a message needing immediate attention

C. under the clothes of an important e-mail

D. with a beautiful coat

¡¾2¡¿The Melissa virus made a computer _____________________.

A. receive tens of bad e-mails

B. fire at many sick e-mail messages

C. send out scores of infected messages

D. burn with a fire because of many infected e-mails

¡¾3¡¿After the attack by the Melissa virus a computer ________________.

A. was slightly damaged

B. became entirely out of order

C. could not send out any e-mail any longer

D. would have to be thrown away

¡¾4¡¿If you opened an infected file by Melissa virus£¬the virus would ______________.

A. damage the user¡¯s address book at once

B. soon spread through the user¡¯s list of address

C. let the first 50 addresses go out of the computer

D. change the user¡¯s address book in the computer

Imagine going to bed not knowing where your next meal is going to come from. ¡¾1¡¿ Today, nearly 11 percent of people on Earth suffer from hunger, according to a recent State of Food Insecurity in the World report published by the United Nations. But it turns out that this number is something to celebrate!

Though the numbers look like a lot, the number of hungry people in the world has actually decreased by about 209 million since 1992. This has been mainly due to the hard work of organizations such as the UN, the FAO and the WFP.

According to the WFP, the world produces enough food to feed the entire population of 7 billion people. ¡¾2¡¿ There are many reasons why food does not go from the producers to the consumers.

People living in poverty cannot afford nutritious foods. This makes them weaker and it is harder for them to earn money to escape from poverty and hunger. ¡¾3¡¿ An average person in the US spends just 6.6% of the income on food.

Drought is one of the most common causes of food shortage in the world. ¡¾4¡¿ In many countries, climate change is worsening the situation.

Conflicts around the world can disrupt farming and food production. Fighting forces millions of people to flee their homes. These people don¡¯t have the means to feed themselves.

¡¾5¡¿ Food that is wasted uses up precious natural resources.

A. How can we solve the problem?

B. Each nation has its own challenges.

C. One-third of all food produced is never consumed.

D. But not everybody has access to food when they need it.

E. That is the fate of nearly 805 million people in the world.

F. Natural disasters such as flood and tropical storms can impact food output too.

G. Do you know in poor countries people spend over 80% of their earnings on food?
