You know that pearls grow inside oysters(牡蛎), but would you ever think to look for diamonds inside an ostrich(鸵鸟)? Well, a hunter once shot an ostrich and discovered, to his great surprise, that the big bird had swallowed a bunch of diamonds. How could such a strange thing happen?
Like many other birds, the ostrich swallows small stones that stay inside its “gizzard”. The gizzard is a bird’s second stomach. It is where the food is ground up. The small stones help to grind up the food so it can be digested. The small stones do the chewing because birds don’t have teeth. In that case of the ostrich with the diamonds, the bird simply had expensive taste in rocks. It used the diamonds to digest its dinner.
Diamonds and stones aren’t all that an ostrich will swallow. If there are no stones around, it will eat just about anything. Sadly for ostriches in zoos, this can be a fatal habit. The tendency to swallow anything it sees has caused the death of many an ostrich. Cruel or careless people often throw things into the bird’s living space. They throw keys, coins, and even large objects such as horseshoes. The ostrich swallows them without hesitation. Coins can be the worst. Inside the ostrich they wear down to a razor-sharp edge. They will cut open the bird’s gizzard from the inside. When one young zoo ostrich died, 484 coins weighing more than eight pounds were found in its gizzard.

科目:高中英语 来源:2015届浙江省宁波市高一上学期期中考试英语试卷(解析版) 题型:阅读理解

One night recently, I was driving down a two-lane highway at about 60 miles an hour. A car approached from the opposite direction at about the same speed. As we passed each other, I caught the other driver’s eye for only a second. I wondered whether he might be thinking, as I was, how dependent we were on each other at that moment. I was relying on him not to fall asleep, not to be distracted (分心) by a phone conversation, not to cross over into my lane and bring my life to a sudden end. Though we had never spoken a word to each other, he relied on me in just the same way.

Multiplied a million times over, I believe that is the way the world works. At some level, we all depend upon one another. Sometimes that dependence requires us simply not to do something like crossing over the double yellow line. And sometimes it requires us to act cooperatively, with friends or even with strangers.

As technology makes our world smaller and smaller, the need increases for cooperative action among nations. In 2003, doctors in five nations were quickly organized to identify the SARS virus, which saved thousands of lives. The threat of international terrorism has shown itself to be a similar problem, one requiring team action by police and intelligence forces across the world. We must recognize that our fates are not ours alone to control.

In my own life, I used to put great stock in personal responsibility. But, as time has passed, I’ve also come to believe that there are moments when one must rely upon the good faith and judgment of others. So, while each of us faces the case of driving alone down a dark road, what we must learn with experience is that the approaching light may not be a threat, but a shared moment of trust.

1.The author considers it very important ______.

A.to drive with a companion

B.to have personal independence

C.to gain certain responsibility

D.to share trust and cooperation

2.The author said that they depended on each other in the same way because ______.

A.the approaching car was very dangerous

B.they both drove their car at a terrific speed

C.he might be killed out of the other’s careless driving

D.it was dark and the road was not wide enough

3. From the second paragraph, we know the author drew the important lesson from ______.

A.only one experience

B.many similar experiences

C.a driver on a dark road

D.many friends and strangers

4.The need for cooperation increases because ______.

A.people’s fates can’t be controlled by themselves

B.certain viruses can spread in a quick way

C.terrorism can happen everywhere and every day

D.the world has become much more dangerous

5.We can infer from the last paragraph that the author has ______.

A.believed in one’s own personal responsibility

B.counted upon himself alone in everything

C.had no trust in others’ good faith and judgment

D.had a change on his viewpoint of life

In the United States, when one became rich, he wants people to know it. And even if he does not become very rich, he wants people to think that he is. That is what ‘keeping up with the Joneses’ is about. It is the story of someone who tried to look as rich as his neighbours.

The expression was first used in 1913 by a young American called Arthur Momand. He told this story about himself. He began earning $ 125 a week at the age of 23. That was a lot of money in those days. He got married and moved with his wife to a very wealthy neighbourhood outside New York City. When he saw that rich people rode horses, Momand went horseback riding every day. When he saw that rich people had servants, Momand and his wife also hired a servant and gave big parties for their new neighbours.

It was like a race, but one could never finish this race because one was always trying to keep up. The race ended for Momand and his wife when they could no longer pay for their new way of life. They moved back to an apartment in New York City.

Momand looked around him and noticed that many people do things just to keep up with rich lifestyle of their neighbours. He saw the funny side of it and started to write a series of short stories. He called it ‘Keeping up with the Joneses’ because ‘Jones’ is a very common name in the United States.’ “Keeping up with the Joneses”came to mean keeping up with rich lifestyle of the people around you. Momand’s series appeared in different newspapers across the country for over 28 years.

People never seem to get tired of keeping up with the Joneses. And there are ‘Jonses’ in every city of the world. But one must get tired of trying to keep up with the Joneses because no matter what one does, Mr. Jones always seems to be ahead.

1.Some people want to keep up with the Joneses because they ______.

A.want to be as rich as their neighbours

B.want others to know or to think that they are rich

C.don’t want others to know they are rich

D.want to be happy

2.It can be inferred from the story that rich people like to ________.

A.live outside New York City

B.live in New York City

C.live in apartments

D.have many neighbours

3.The underlined word “neighbourhood” in the second paragraph means ________.

A.a person who lives near another

B.people living in an area

C.an area near the place referred to

D.an area in another town or city

4.Arthur Momand used the name ‘Jones’ in his series of short stories because’ Jones’ is ________.

A.an important name

B.a popular name in the United States

C.his neighbour’s name

D.not a good name

5.According to the writer, keeping up with the Joneses is ________.

A.correct
