In his speech addressed to the students of Tsinghua University on Nov.16, 2005, California Gov.Arnold Schwarzenegger told them of his early experience as a weightlifter.

“…Now, I remember the first real workout(训练)I had.Eight miles away from my home village in Austria there was a gymnasium, and I rode there on a bicycle and trained for half an hour, because they said that after half an hour you should stop, otherwise, your body would get really sore(疼痛).But after half an hour I looked at my body, and nothing had happened. So I said,‘I'd better work out for another half an hour.'So I lifted some more.My strength didn't improve; I didn't see the muscles pop out or anything like that, so I trained for another half an hour. Then I left the gym and rode home, but after the first mile, I got numb(麻木;失去知觉)-I couldn't feel the handle of the bicycle anymore-and I fell off the bike.I got up and tried it again. After another few yards.I fell off again. And I tried it three or four more times and couldn't ride my bicycle because my body was so numb and my legs felt like noodles.

The next morning when I got up, my body was so sore that I couldn't even lift my arms to comb my hair. But I learn a very important lesson-that pain means progress.Pain is progress. Each time my muscles were sore from a workout, I knew that they were growing and that they were getting stronger…”

答案:
解析:
Things that bring us pain make us grow

Arnold Schwarzenegger described his first training as a weightlifter and drew the conclusion that it is through pain that we strengthen ourselves and make progress.

From his story, we know that we shouldn't be afraid of pain and that things that bring us pain make us grow.If he hadn't exercised more than usual and had given up, his muscle would not have grown much stronger.

His experience reminds me of my first year in senior high school.I entered my name for the 3,000-metre race in the sports meet and started training for it.But a few days later, my legs were so sore that I wanted to quit. However, with my classmates' encouragement, I picked up my courage again and went on training. As a result, I took the first place in the race and was highly praised by the school.

Many an example shows that we shouldn't be afraid of painful experiences which will help us grow stronger both physically and mentally.

As I got into a taxi one afternoon, the driver was very angry about something that had happened to him earlier that day. Here’s how he told the story:

“One of my fares (旅客) left a wallet in my cab this morning. Nearly three hundred dollars in it. I spent more than an hour trying to trace the guy. Finally I found him at his hotel. He took the wallet without a word and glared at me as though I’d meant to steal it.”

“He didn’t give you a reward?” I asked.

“Not a cent. But it wasn’t the money I wanted,” he fumbled, then exploded, “If the guy had only said something…”

Why was the driver so upset? All he wanted was something simple, but even more valuable than money: to be thanked for his efforts. In short, what he wanted, what he needed but did not get, was a little bit of gratitude.

The way people hold the belief that a fun-filled, pain-free lifestyle equals happiness actually reduces their chances of ever obtaining real happiness. If fun and pleasure are equal to happiness, then pain must be equal to unhappiness. But in fact, the opposite is true: more often than not things that lead to happiness contain some pain.
As a result, many people avoid the very attempts that are the source of true happiness. They fear the pain inevitably (不可避免地) brought by such things as marriage, raising children, professional achievement, religious commitment, self-improvement.
Ask a bachelor why he resists marriage even though he finds dating to be less and less satisfying. If he is honest,he will tell you that he is afraid of making a commitment, for commitment is in fact quite painful. The single life is filled with fun, adventure and excitement.Marriage has such moments, but they are not its most distinguishing features.
Couples, with infant children, are lucky to get a whole night’s sleep of a three-day vacation. We don’t know any parent who would choose the word fun to describe raising children. But couples that decide not to have children ever know the joys of watching a child grow up or playing with a grandchild.

Understanding and accepting that true happiness has nothing to do with fun is one of the most liberating realizations. It liberates time: now we can devote more hours to activities that can really increase our happiness. It liberates money: buying that new car or those fancy clothes to increase our happiness now seems pointless. And it liberates us from envy: we now understand that all those who always have so much fun actually may not be happy at all.

请认真阅读下面的短文,并根据所读内容在文章后的空格内填入最恰当的单词。每空格1个单词。

Weddings are so important in China that couples are willing to fork out about 20 times their monthly income on getting hitched and everything that comes with it.

China's newly-weds in cities spend 126,600 Yuan (16,600 U.S. dollars) on average in 2006 when getting hitched, Thursday's Chongqing Youth Daily reported, citing a recent survey by the Ministry of Commerce.

An analysis of 60,000 couples living in cities showed that about 64 percent of the spending went on house decoration, furniture and household appliances and the rest was spent on the wedding, such as the ceremony, photography, wedding dresses and feast.

The survey said the wedding expenditure was only a small share of the overall marriage cost as most Chinese young couples in the cities tended to buy an apartment and a car before tying the knot.

The survey said that about 81.6 percent of the newly-weds admitted that they had got economic support from parents as their monthly income on average was only about 6,240 yuan.

The survey also showed that about 88.4 percent of the newly-weds chose having wedding photography as a priority and 78.74 chose hosting a wedding banquet.

In contrast, young couples in the countryside spent about 40,000 yuan on average on marriage-related issues, less than one third of their city peers, according to the report.

About 8.49 million couples got married in China in 2006.
