13.Mary will never forget the first time she(41)saw(see) him.He suddenly appeared in class one day,(42)wearing(wear) sunglasses. He walked in as if he had bought the school. And the word quickly got around that he was (43)fromNew York City.
For some reason he sat beside Mary.Mary felt (44)pleased(please),because there (45)were(be) empty seats in the room. But she quickly realized that it wasn't her,it was probably the fact that she sat in the last row.
If he thought he could escape attention by (46)sitting(sit) at the back,he was wrong. It might make it a little (47)harder(hard) for everybody because it meant they had to turn around, but that didn't stop the kids in the class.Of course whenever they turned to look at him, they had to look at Mary,(48)whichmade her feel like a star.
"Do you need those glasses for medical reasons?"the teacher asked. The new boy shook his head."Then I'd appreciate it if you didn't wear them in class.I like to look at your eyes when I'm speaking(49)toyou."The new boy looked at the teacher for a few seconds and all the other students wondered what the boy would do.Then he took them off, gave (50)thembig smile and said"That is cool".

43.from 考查介词.be from意为"来自于",是固定搭配.
44.pleased 考查过去分词.feel是系动词,后接形容词作表语.
45.were 考查主谓一致.在there be结构中,be与主语empty seats一致,用复数were.
49.to 考查介词.speak to意为"对…讲",是固定搭配.
50.them 考查代词.them指代上文中all the other students.

5.Wearing ties was originally the mark of Britain's most powerful classes,which made the tie itself a symbol of power and respect.And that led it to be adopted by a much larger tribe-the business tribe.
You cannot wear a tie if you work with machinery.So wearing a tie became a sign that you were a man who used your brain to make a living,rather than your hands.It showed you were serious.It showed you were a professional.It meant that everyone who wanted a job in business had to wear one.It was just impossible to take seriously a man who didn't wear a piece of colored silk around his neck.
This is how millions of people came to be wearing ties across the world.They are part of the uniform of business.
"Ties offer a point of difference,"says John Milne,head of the British Guide of Tie Makers."They give a chance to say something about their own personality."
So if you happen to meet a man with a very brightly colored tie,there is a good chance that he is the office joker.There is also a good chance that he will be wearing brightly colored socks.
Is there a future for ties?The signs are not promising.Tie wearing seems to be rare among entrepreneurs(企业家) in the Internet and new technology industries.Many political leaders,including British Prime Minister Tony Blair,now go without ties.This shows they are men of the people-but not the people wearing ties.
Up until around 1960,it was common for men across the Western world to wear hats as part of their business uniform.That changed with the election of John F.Kennedy to the presidency of the United States.Kennedy never wore a hat in fact his nickname was"hatless Jack".Seeing that the most powerful man in the world did not have to wear a hat,millions of
other men decided that they did not have to,either.Perhaps"tieless Tony"(UK Prime Minister Tony Blair) will have the same effect as"hatless Jack".

A.millions of people will go to work without a tie

3.Most American students go to traditional public schools.There are about 88,000public schools all over the US.Some students attend about 3,000independent public schools called charter schools.
Charter schools are selfgoverning.Private companies operate some charter schools.They are similar in some ways to traditional public schools.They receive tax just as other public schools do.Charter schools must prove to local or state governments that their students are learning.These govern-ments  provide  the  schools  with  the  agreement called a charter that permits them to operate.
Charter schools are different because they don't have to obey most laws governing  traditional public schools.Local,state or federal governments cannot tell them what to teach.Each school can choose its own goals and decide the ways it wants to reach them.Class size is usually smaller than in traditional public schools.
Governments strongly support charter schools  as a way to reorganize public  schools that are  failing to educate students.But some education agencies and unions oppose charter schools.One teachers'union has just made public the results of the first national study comparing the progress of students in traditional schools and charter schools.
The American Federation of Teachers criticized the government's delay in releasing the results of the study,which is called the National Assessment of Educational Progress.Union education experts say the study shows that charter school students  performed  worse in math and reading tests than students in regular public schools.
Some experts say the study is not a fair look at charter schools because students in those schools have more problems than students in traditional schools.Other education experts say the study results should make charter school officials demand more student progress.
9.If a private company wants to operate a charter school,it mustD.
A. try new methods of teaching
B. prove its management ability
C. obey all local and state laws
D. get the government's permission
10.Charter schools are independent becauseC.
A. they make greater progress
B. their class size is smaller
C. they enjoy more freedom
D. they oppose traditional ways
11.What can we learn from the text?D
A. More students choose to attend charter schools.
B. Charter schools are better than traditional schools.
C. Students in charter schools are well educated.
D. People have different opinions about charter schools.
