8.It came as something of a surprise when Diana,Princess of Wales,made a trip to Angola in 1997,to support the Red Cross's campaign for a total ban on all anti-personnel landmines.Within hours of arriving in Angola television screens around the world were filled with images of her comforting victims injured in explosions caused by landmines."I knew the statistics,"she said,"But putting a face to those figures brought the reality home to me; like when I met Sandra,a 13-year-old girl who had lost her leg,and people like her."
The Princess concluded with a simple message:"We must stop landmines".And she used every opportunity during her visit to repeat this message.
But,back in London,her views were not shared by some members of the British government,which refused to support a ban on these weapons.Angry politicians launched an attack on the Princess in the press.They described her as"very ill-informed"and a"loose cannon (乱放炮的人)."
The Princess responded by brushing aside the criticisms:"This is a distraction we do not need.All I'm trying to do is help."
Opposition parties,the media and the public immediately voiced their support for the Princess.To make matters worse for the government,it soon emerged that the Princess's trip had been approved by the Foreign Office,and that she was in fact very well-informed about both the situation in Angola and the British government's policy regarding landmines.The result was a severe embarrassment for the government.
To try and limit the damage,the Foreign Secretary,Malcolm Rifkind,claimed that the Princess's views on landmines were not very different from government policy,and that it was"working towards"a worldwide ban.The Defence Secretary,Michael Portillo,claimed the matter was"a misinterpretation or misunderstanding".
For the Princess,the trip to this war-torn country was an excellent opportunity to use her popularity to show the world how much destruction and suffering landmines can cause.She said that the experience had also given her the chance to get closer to people and their problems.

56.Princess Diana paid a visit to Angola in 1997A.
A.to voice her support for a total ban of landmines.

C.to investigate the sufferings of landmine victims.
D.to establish her image as a friend of landmine victims.
57.What did Diana mean when she said"…putting a face to those figures brought the reality home to me"(Para.1)?D
A.She just couldn't bear to meet the landmine victims face to face.
B.The actual situation in Angola made her feel like going back home.
C.Meeting the landmine victims in person made her believe the statistics.

59.What did Princess Diana think of her visit to Angola?B
A.It had caused embarrassment to the British government.
B.It had brought her closer to the ordinary people.
C.It had greatly promoted her popularity.
D.It had affected her relations with the British government.

I took the bus to work for many years. No one knew each other; the passengers all sat there sleepily in the morning. The bus was cheerless and silent.

One of the passengers was a small gray-haired man who took the bus to the center for senior citizens every morning. No one ever paid very much attention to him.

One July morning he said good morning to the driver and smiled. The driver nodded guardedly(戒备地). The rest of us were silent.

The next day, the old man boarded with a big smile and said in a loud voice: “A very good morning to you all!” Some of us looked up, amazed, and murmured “Good Morning” in reply.

The following weeks, our friend was dressed in a nice old suit and tie. His thin hair had been carefully combed. He said good morning to us every day and we gradually began to nod and talk to each other.

One morning he even had a bunch of wild flowers in his hand. The driver turned around smiling and asked: “Have you got yourself a girlfriend, Charlie?” We never got to know if his name really was “Charlie”, but he nodded shyly and said yes. The other passengers whistled and clapped at him. Charlie waved the flowers before he sat down on his seat.

Every morning after that Charlie always brought flowers. Some passengers also brought flowers for him. The bus became a happy place.

Then, one morning, as autumn was closing in, Charlie wasn’t waiting at his usual stop. When he wasn’t there the next day and the day after that, we started wondering if he was sick or—hopefully – on holiday somewhere.

When we came nearer to the center for senior citizens, one of the passengers asked the driver to wait. We all held our breaths when he went to the door.

The old gentle man was fine, but one of his close friends had died over the weekend. How silent we were the rest of the way to work.

The next Monday Charlie was waiting at the stop, stooping (弯腰) a bit more, a little bit more gray, and without a tie. Inside the bus was silent. Even though no one had talked about it, all of us sat there silently, our eyes filled with tears and a bunch of wild flowers in our hands.

17.During March break,I had an opportunity to go to Ecuador on a mission trip.In Quito,the capital city,slums dominate,stray dogs exist on every street comer and walls topped with broken glass or nails frame the city streets.Most of the city seems to be held together by pure will,from the one room shack resting on the side of a mountain,to a wall leaning so far over.It doesn't feel safe to walk beside.
In North America,we try to hide our problems behind shiny glass and steel buildings.We cover our emotions with stuff (物质).The world sees the proud face put forth by the cities and economies of the western world.In reality,something important is lacking beneath our skyscrapers.Personally,what the average family cares about is what you own and what you do for a living.Families fall apart and the days of knowing your neighbors are long gone.
In Ecuador,many people face problems:poverty,abuse,alcoholism,unemployment and broken homes.Yet they are the happiest,most optimistic people I have ever met.They are always smiling and greeting people.If you get close enough,they'll pull you into a hug and talk to you in Spanish even though you can't understand a single word.
As I worked alongside the Ecuadorians,it became clear that the things North Americans are missing are the relationships and sense of community that hold the people together.These are the key elements to our happiness.
The people of Ecuador lack so much,yet they have so much more to give.The children are raised by a community,and their expressions of love are far more effective than our North American attempts to love our children with stuff.The Ecuadorian people help each other in all ways possible.They pulled me in and shared their love with me.In one of the strangest places I have ever been,I felt at home.
In North America,we need to share and give love like the people of Ecuador.Under our mask of steel and glass,we are more damaged than some of the least privileged people in the world.I went on this trip to help people,but in the end,they helped me more than I could ever help them.
68.Which is the best title for this passage?A
A.Discovering What We lack
B.Bringing Happiness to the Poor
C.Helping for Love in Return
D.Building International Relationship
69.Which of the following sentences can be put in the blank in Paragraph 1?C
A.People don't share many common interests in North America and Ecuador.
B.North America is very unique from Ecuador but also similar in some ways.
C.The differences between the North American world and Ecuador are vast.
D.Some serious economic problems exist in North America and Ecuador.
70.Which of the following is TRUE?B
A.Ecuadorians are blind to their social problems.
B.Material needs are overstressed in North America.
C.Ecuadorians love their children with stuff more effectively.
D.Emotional problems are obvious to be noticed in North America.
71.The writer convinces the readers byD.
A.explaining causes
