Sometimes people call each other “scared-cat”, but have you ever thought about this expression? When a cat is frightened, its heart starts beating faster, its muscles (肌肉) get tense, and there are changes in the chemicals in its blood-stream.
Although the cat doesn’t 36  this, its body is getting ready for action. If the danger continues, this animal will do one of the two things. It will 37 itself, or it will run away as fast as it can.
38 , when people are excited, angry, scared, or aroused by other emotions, our bodies also go through many 39  changes. Our hearts beat faster, and our muscles get tense. All of these changes make us more alert and ready to react. We, too, get ready to defend ourselves 40  run.
Human beings, 41  , have a problem that animals never face. If we give way to our feelings and let them 42  , we can get into trouble. Have you ever said something in anger, or hit somebody and regretted it later? Have you ever shouted at a teacher, told someone you were lonely, or said you were in love, and then 43  later you had kept your mouth shut? It isn’t always 44  to express your feelings freely.
Does this mean that it’s smarter always to 45  our feelings? No! If you 46  feelings of anger, sadness, and bitterness hidden away or bottled up inside, your body stays47  . Physical illnesses can develop. It can actually be48  for your health.
Feelings that you keep all bottled up inside, don’t just 49  . It’s like you bought some bananas and stuck them in a cupboard. You might not be able to see them, but 50  you’d smell them. And if you opened the cupboard, you’d  51  little fruit flies hovering (盘旋) all over them. They’d be rotten.
You can try to treat emotions 52  they were bananas in the cupboard. You can 53  they don’t exist, but they’ll still be 54  . And at last you’ll have to 55  them, just like those bananas.

Most of the news in the newspapers is bad but sometimes there is a story with good news. This is one of those stories. Millions of people around the world suffer from AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis, and other serious diseases. There are medicines to treat these diseases but for people in poor countries, these medicines are too expensive to buy. When a pharmaceutical(制药的)company produces a new medicine, they receive a special license called a patent. This license means that the new medicine or drug is protected for a period of 20 years. The company that produced the drug can fix the price of the drug and no other company is allowed to produce the same drug or a copy of the drug for 20 years. At the moment, these patents operate all over the world, both in rich countries and in poor countries. The drugs companies say that they need patents so that they can get the money to pay for research to find new drugs and medicines. In rich countries people usually have enough money to pay for these drugs but in poor countries people can’t afford to buy them and cannot treat diseases like AIDS and malaria.
Last month, however, a group of experts published a report which says that patents are very bad for poor countries. The report says that drug companies do not want to find new medicines for diseases of poor people in poor countries. It says that poor countries should be allowed to buy cheap drugs without patents from other countries.
The authors of the report were lawyers, scientists and a senior director from the drug company Pfizer. Of course, the pharmaceuticals industry doesn’t agree with the report, “We need patents so that we can develop new medicines to fight disease both in the developed and developing world,” said a spokesman. But the report is the first sign that there might be a change in the patent system. This change could save millions of lives in the world’s poorest countries. This really is good news.

A.Millions of lives will be saved in poor countries.

How to make friends with people from a different culture? The rules are as follows:
Appreciate the Person.
Most Americans like to be recognized as individuals as someone special with unique personalities. Therefore, never say, “You’re from America so I want to be your friend.” Also don’t imply that the reason why you approached them is that you wanted someone to practice your English with. That turns people off. Instead try saying,” You seem like a real nice and interesting person and I would like to get to know you better.” This way, they are much more inclined to be friendly because you see them as a three dimensional person and appreciate them for who they are in the inside. And by doing so, you not only learn about Americans and practice your English, but also gain a real friend in the process.
Quit Calling Us Foreigners.
Please avoid calling a foreigner a foreigner especially in his face. The word makes people feel like an outsider, and even unwelcome, suggesting separation and insurmountable differences, widening an already existing gap in the situation. When Americans travel, they rarely say, “ I’m foreign to your place.” They tend to say, “ I’m new in town. I’m new here.” The reason is because new and unfamiliar things can become old and familiar. But can foreign things become native? Aha? You catch my drift.
Just Do It.
Some students like to be told about American culture but are less interested in spending the time and the effort to actually experience it. As Americans always say, “ Get your hands dirty.” You should have first hand and hands on experience, or you’ll never really know anything.
Find that Common Language.
Now I must stress the importance of finding a common language. By that I don’t mean English, Chinese, German, French, etc. I mean finding something you have in common with another person on a spiritual and philosophical level: likes, dislikes, worldviews, ways of thinking , and attitudes toward life. And to start, you must first enhance your knowledge of the particular culture from which your potential new friend comes form.
小题1:The underlined sentence “ Get your hands dirty” means    .
A.get involvedB.start with dirty work
C.talk about American cultureD.don’t wash your hands too often
小题2: Americans prefer to make friends with those who    .
A.avoid talking about their homeland
B.recognize their personalities
C.obey rules of communicating with friends
D.needn’t practice English while playing together
小题3:According to the passage, which of the following is friendly?
A.I am longing to make friends with an American.
B.This is my friend Tom, who is a foreigner.
C.There must be a gap between us in many things.
D.You’ve got a great personality.

What is red but green, open but closed and old but new?
The answer is: London’s new double-decker(双层)buses.
Red double-deckers are a symbol of the city. Their status was sealed (确定) in 2008 when one bus made the longer-than-usual trip to Beijing to collect a special passenger: the Olympic Flame.
On November 11, a life-size model of the new bus was shown to the media. The Guardian reported that the new design shares some of the features of the much-missed double-decker Routemaster bus. The original Routemaster was introduced in 1956 but December 2005 saw the end of the old bus’s general service. It was because the bus was difficult for some passengers to use and not environmentally friendly. But it can still be seen on two heritage routes in the city.
Its replacements —boxy, modern double—deckers—have failed to win Londoners’ affection.
London mayor Boris Johnson told the BBC that the new buses were “a combination of nostalgia(怀旧)and the latest technology”. “Standing on the back platform of this bus brings a sense of nostalgia but also shows the best part of the latest technology and design, making this bus fit for the 21st Century,” he said.
The new bus also returns to the driver—and—conductor model—a key feature of the original version. It will be quieter than the old type and have a platform offering passengers the traditional hop—on hop—off service.
The first five new buses will be seen on the roads by early 2012.
小题1:Which of the following shows that red double—deckers are a symbol of London?
A.They have a long history and are seen everywhere in London.
B.They have nothing in common with the traditional Routemaster bus.
C.One such bus went from London to Beijing to collect the Olympic Flame.
D.They carried British athletes from London to attend the Beijing Olympics.
小题2:Which of the following is true of the original Routemaster?
A.The bus came into use in the 1960s.
B.The bus was banned because it was harmful to the environment.
C.Passengers didn’t like the bus because it was slow.
D.Visitors to London cannot see such buses on the roads any more.
小题3:According to London mayor Boris Johnson, the new Routemaster          .
A.has not been as well received as was expected
B.will be widely used in London in 2012
C.is the most environmentally friendly bus in the UK
D.combines the latest technology with key traditional features
小题4:What is the characteristic of the new red double – deckers?
A.The buses will make no noises.
B.The buses will have no conductors.
C.They will be equipped with air – conditioning.
D.The bus platform will offer passengers a traditional service.

There is a boy called Bill in my gym class who has unbearably yellow teeth that almost make everyone feel unpleasant.Recently another boy told Bill that he should "go Ajax" his teeth.Bill was crushed. If the other boy had been thinking, he would have realized that there is a better way to handle such a situation. He could have dealt with it with tact.He could have showed this hurtful truth in a more careful, sensitive way—that's "tact".
If a person isn't sensitive to another's feelings, there is no way he or she can be tactful.Yesterday, my 5-year-old brother proudly announced that he had cleaned the screen on our television set.Unfortunately, he used furniture polish, which produced an oily film on the television screen. My mother smiled arid thanked him for his efforts—and then showed how to clean the screen properly. Her sensitivity enables my brother to keep his self-respect.Yet, sensitivity alone does not make tact.
"Tactfulness" also requires "truthfulness".Doctors, for example must be truthful. If a patient has just been disabled in an accident, a tactful doctor will tell the truth—but express it with sensitivity. The doctor may try to give the patient hope by telling them curing techniques under study or about advanced equipment now available.Doctors must use tact with patients' relatives as well.Instead of bluntly saying, "Your husband is disabled," a doctor might say, "I'm sorry, but your husband has lost feeling in his legs and..."
Tact should not be confused with trickery.Trickery occurs when a nurse is about to give a patient an injection(注射) and says, "This won't hurt a bit." Instead of trickery, the nurse might guarantee the patient that the discomfort of the injection is a small thing compared to the benefits of it.It would also be thoughtful for the nurse to tell the patients about some of these benefits.
Tact is a wonderful skill to have, and tactful people are usually admired and respected.Without tact our society would become an intolerable place to live in.
小题1:The underlined word "crushed" in the first paragraph probably means____.
A.surprisedB.cheatedC.regretfulD.painful
小题2:According to the author, his mother's praise for the brother is ____.
A.sensitive and tactfulB.sensitive but not tactful enough
C.truthful but not tactful enoughD.sensitive but trickish
小题3:Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?
(The numbers stand for the paragraphs)
