Aristotle once wrote that “happiness is a state of activity”. In other words, whether you, re
Seeking life-long satisfaction or a few moments of good cheer, you’ve got to move forward. We’ve interviewed the experts and found five steps to take toward a sunny mood(心情):
Over a 30-year period, University of Illinois researchers asked nearly 120, 000 people how income, education, political participation volunteer activities and close relationships affected their happiness. Reported Newsweek, s Sharon Begley on the findings, “The highest levels of happiness are found with the most stable and satisfying relationships. ”
Singing aloud, talking to a stranger, raising your hand: all may increase a feeling of happiness, according to a study from Wake Forest University. Participants(参与者)followed the development of their moods for two weeks and reported feeling happier when they were more outgoing and less happy when reserved or withdrawn.
The editors of forbes. Com gave $5 or $20 to 46 strangers by chance. Half the group was told to spend the money on themselves, while the other half was told to spend it on others. Those who’d shared the wealth felt much happier at the end of the day than those who’d spent it on themselves. There was no difference in happiness between those who spent $5 or $20, suggesting that it, s not how much money you spend, but how you spend it, that inspires the spirit.
Studies from the Positive Psychology Center showed that discouraged people who wrote down three good things that happened to them each day for six months reported an improved attitude.
Drinking water really can help keep you cheerful. A small 2012 study from the University of Connecticut suggested that even slight dehydration(脱水) affected the moods of its female participants.

Recently we told you about a finding that more years of school could help students get higherscores on intelligence tests. That was the finding of a study of teenage males in Norway. Now,other research shows that physical activity may help students do better in their classes .
The research comes as educators in some countries are reducing time for activities like physical education. They are using the time instead for academic subjects like maths and reading. The studies appeared between 2007 and 2013.They included more than 55,000 children, aged 6 to 18.
Amika Singh:“Based on the results of our study,we can conclude that being physically active is beneficial for academic performance. There are, first,Physiological explanations, like more blood flow, and so more oxygen to the brain.Being physically active means there are more hormones(荷尔蒙)produced like endorphins(内啡肽).And endorphins make your stress level lower and? your mood improved, which means you also perform better.”
Also, students involved in organized sports learn rules and how to follow them. This could improve their classroom behavior and help them keep their mind on their work.
The study leaves some questions unanswered,however.Ms.Stash says it is not possible to say whether the amount or kind of activity affected the level of academic improvement. This is because of differences among the studies .
Also.they were mostly observational studies. An observational study is where researchers do not do controlled comparisons. They only describe what they observe. So they might observe a link that students who are more active often have better grades. But that does not necessarily mean being active was the cause of those higher grades.
The researchers said they found only two high - quality studies. They called for more high-
quality studies to confirm their findings. They also pointed out that “outcomes for other parts of the world may be quite different. ”
Still, the general finding was that physically active kids are more likely to do better in school.Ms.Singh says schools should consider that finding before they cut physical education programs. Her paper on “Physical Activity and Performance at School”is published in the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine.
1.The passage mainly tells us that ____
A.a research on physical education has been done by the researchers
B.there exists a possibility that physical activity leads to higher grades
C.the amount or kind of activity directly affects academic level
D.the research shows that the children aged 6 to 1 8 don't do sports

A.Being mentally active is good for academic subjects.
B.The more hormones you have, the more stressed you will get.
C.They have found many high-quality studies to prove the research.
D.The educators in the research think studies, not exercise, mean much to students.

A.good marks result from high-quality study
B.findings probably vary in different areas
C.physical activity will spread all over the world
D.academic performance depends on the surroundings
4.What's the purpose of writing the passage?

Something that has always interested me about Abraham Lincoln is,not surprisingly, his sense of humor. As far as I can tell,he's the first American President to have one.
That's because the term“sense of humor” really wasn't in common usage until the eighteen-sixties and seventies. In the eighteen-forties and fifties,it was called“the sense of the ridiculous," and didn't have the positive connotations(隐含意义)that“sense of humor" has today. Back then, what was ridiculous was what invited ridicule(讥笑).Funniness and cruelty went hand in hand.Of course, they still do a lot of arm-in-arm walking in our day as well.
Lincoln’s humor was very different because, for one thing,it was actually "humor"as what the word meant in his time. We don't make the distinction between "wit(风趣)”and "humor”anymore; but in the nineteenth century people did.Wit was unpleasant and offensive while humor was pleasant and sympathetic. It’s the difference we note now when we distinguish between "laughing with”and“laughing at.”Lincoln was much more about "laughing with”than "laughing at.”And when“laughing at,”it was often himself he was teasing.
In the famous Lincoln-Douglas debates, when Douglas accused Lincoln of being two-faced,Lincoln replied, referencing his plain looking,“Honestly,if I were two-faced,would I be showing you this one?”And,in a way,Lincoln's face itself tells us much about his sense of humor.
You can comb through thousands of photographs of politicians, soldiers, and the like from Lincoln's time and not find a single smile.
True, the long exposures(曝光)required for photographs of that time made smiling difficult.Yet Lincoln alone,as far as I can tell, overcame that difficulty.
Interestingly, while having a sense of humor,or at least the appearance of one provided by comedy writers has become a necessary characteristic for an American President in our time,in the nineteenth century, too much humor was considered problem. And that was the case for Lincoln.A journalist covering the Lincoln-Douglas debates commented that“I could not take a real personal liking to the man, owing to an inborn weakness. . .that he was extremely, fond of jokes, anecdotes, and stories.”
1.We can infer from Paragraph 2 that__
A .the American President could influence the use of English
B. the term "sense of humor”wasn't invented until the 1860s
C .what is funny to someone might be offensive to someone else
D. the concept of humor remains the same despite the passing of time
2.The underlined words“this one”in Paragraph 4 refer to__.
A. Lincoln's unattractive face
B. Lincoln's sense of humor
C. the debate they were having
D.cruelty that went with funniness
3.We rarely see people from Lincoln's time wear smile in their photos because_.
A. being humorous was considered inappropriate
B. they found it quite funny to smile before camera
C. not smiling for photographs was the fashion
D. photography technology then was not advanced
4.What might the writer think of the journalist covering the Lincoln-Douglas debates?
A. His comment accurately reflected his time
B. He created a false picture of Lincoln
C. He was prejudiced and self-centered
D. He was brave to point out Lincoln's weakness
