Dear Sir,

Recently, we have had a discussion on the question: “Would you go shopping with your friend at his request while you are going over your lessons?”

My classmates Li Lei and Tom have different viewpoints. Li Lei thinks that he can’t refuse his friend’s request even though his studies will be affected. Good friends should try their best to do whatever they are asked to do and it is not important whether his studies will be affected. Friendship comes first. But Tom thinks oppositely. He says he won’t meet all requests from his friends. Shopping can be done in spare time. As students, studying is more important than shopping.

In my opinion, either Li Lei or Tom is right to some extent. We may meet our friends’ request, but that depends. If we have difficulties, we should let them know.

How fit are your teeth? Are you lazy about brushing them? Never fear: An inventor is on the case. An electric toothbrush senses (感觉) how long and how well you brush, and it lets you track(跟踪) your performance on your phone.

The Kolibree toothbrush was exhibited at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week. It senses how it is moved and can send the information to an Android phone or iPhone via a Bluetooth wireless (无线的) connection.

The toothbrush will be able to teach you to brush right (don’t forget the insides of the teeth!) and make sure you’re brushing long enough. “It’s kind of like having a dentist actually watch your brushing on a day-to-day basis,” says Thomas Serval, the French inventor.

The toothbrush will also be able to talk to other applications (设备)on your phone, so developers could, for example, create a game controlled by your toothbrush. You could score points for beating monsters among your teeth. “We try to make it smart and fun,” Serval says.

Serval says he was inspired by his experience as a father. He would come home from work and ask his kids if they had brushed their teeth. They said “yes,” but Serval would find their toothbrush heads dry. He decided he needed a brush that really told him how well his children brushed.

The company says the Kolibree will go on sale this summer, from $99 to $199, and the U.S. is the first target market. ( 目标市场)

Family traditions were important in our house, and one was more appreciated than our annual trip to the woods for the perfect Christmas tree.

“Dad, can we watch when you trim(修剪) it?” my eldest son ,John ,asked on the way home.

“I won’t be cutting this year,” my husband said.” You and your brother Dan are old enough to measure things, fit the tree to the stand and do it by yourselves. Think you boys can handle it?”

They seemed to grow six inches in their chairs at the thought of such an amazing responsibility. “We can handle it,” Dan promised. We won’t let you down.”

A few days before Christmas, Dan and John rushed in after school. They gathered the tools they’d need and brought them out of yard, where the tree waited. I left the older boys to their work and brought David inside for his early supper. A moment later I heard the happy sounds as the boys carried the trees into the living room. Then I heard the sound become dead silence. I hurried out to them. The tree was too short. John crossed his arm tight across his chest. His eyes were filled with angry tears.

The tree was central to our holiday, but it was not what I worried about. I didn’t want the boys to feel ashamed every time they looked at it. We had a terrible problem on our hands. I couldn’t lower the ceiling, and I couldn’t raise the floor either. There was no way to repair the damage. If I couldn’t fix the problem, maybe I could get creative with it. A thought came to my mind, which turned to the solution.

I followed them back into the living room.. “We can’t make the tree taller,” I said. “But we can put it on a higher position.” Dan turned his head sideways, measuring the distance with his eyes . “We can put it on the coffee table and put the lights and decorations on before we lift it up . Thus, we won’t need a ladder. It just might work! Let’s try it!”

When my husband got home and looked at the big tree on top of the coffee table, Dan and John held their breath.

“What a good idea!” he declared, as if the boys had gone beyond all his expectations. “Why didn’t I ever think of such a thing ?”

John broke into a grin. Dan’s chest swelled with pride. David squealed.

1.Who trimmed the Christmas trees this year?

A. David B. The writer

C. The children D. The writer’s husband

2.By “ grow six inches” ( Paragraph4), the writer means that the children might feel _____.

A. excited B. nervous C. terrible D. worried

3.What was the writer worried about according to Paragraph 6?

A.The Christmas tree B. The husband’s health

C. The holiday D. The boys’ pride

4.How was the short tree turned into a perfect one?

A. By making it taller B. By lowering the ceiling

C. By placing it on a table D. By raising the floor

5.What the writer’s husband said in the end shows that ________.

A. he expected too much of the children

B. he was satisfied with what the children had done

C. it was stupid of the children to think of such an idea.

D.the children shouldn’t have given up the responsibility

Below is a passage adapted from the network edition of China Daily.

Event

Li Yang, one of China’s most famous English teachers, apologized for beating his American wife more than a week after she posted photos of her injuries on the web and set off a bomb of criticism.

“I wholeheartedly apologize to my wife Kim and my girls for committing domestic violence. This has caused them serious physical and mental damage,” Li said on his microblog at Weibo.com, the country’s most popular social media site, on Saturday. Li, 42, is a mechanics major but is best known for his “Crazy English,” a popular method of language learning that involves yelling at the top of one’s lungs.

He was at the center of public criticism after his wife Kim Lee put up posts on the web accusing him of abuse, showing her swollen forehead and knees.

Voices

@Xuemanzi, angel investor

Anti-domestic violence laws should be made as soon as possible, giving protection to the rights of women and children lawfully. Police should not stand back from domestic violence any longer, even if no one reports them. Society, as a whole, should attach greater importance to the crime.

@Zhangxiaomei

Chinese are never taught about marital(婚姻的) relations, which mean not merely living together. A good marriage needs to overcome three differences: family background, gender and personalities. In addition to these, there is cultural gap in Li Yang’s case. If the effects of these differences are not well understood, after the honeymoon period, they will turn into conflicts and endanger the marriage. Li’s domestic violence is a reminder that China needs such education.

@Wuxiaolong, Sina Weibo user

Li Yang’s choice to resort to domestic violence really reflects his character. Students who have attended his Crazy English Camp may know what I mean: Li wants his students to worship him as an idol. I still remember he once had his students kowtow(叩头) to him. He always teaches English by imposition(权威强制), which directly reflects his desire for power.

@Sikaozhe, Sina Weibo user

In the US, the punishments for domestic violence are even more severe than stealing. If the police arrive at the wife’s call during a fighting between a couple and find injuries on her, they will immediately arrest the husband. Even if the wife doesn’t call the police, they may also show up as neighbors could well do their part.

@ykxin Sina Weibo User

Don’t blindly worship anyone, because in every closet there may hide a skeleton. As a famous Chinese saying goes, “Only they who do well in their daily routine tasks can fulfills their dreams on great occasions”. Not surprisingly, one who focuses too much on his career and ignores his family, like Li Yang, will fail in both. Don’t judge a person by his career success, wealth, or any other material aspect, because what finally decides a person is his character.

Aftermath(余波)

Although Li Yang publicly apologized to his wife, promising to love his daughters even if he and Lee divorce, the damage, perhaps permanently, has been done to his wife, his three daughters and the whole family.

Wang Xingjuan, founder of the Maple Women’s Psychological Consulting Center, a non-profit organization, said nearly half of domestic violence abusers are people who have higher education, senior jobs and social status. She said this was probably because such people were usually under more mental stress.

1.This passage is focused on Li Yang’s .

A.microblog article

B.domestic violence

C.English-teaching career

D.international marriage

2.Zhangxiaomei holds the view that .

A.laws should be passed to protect women and children

B.crazy personality accounts for violence and ill temper

C.overcoming background gap is necessary for marriage

D.Li is wrong to have his students worship him as an idol

3.Who thinks that character plays the most important role in one’s life?

A.@Xuemanzi B.@Sikaozhe

C.@ykxin D.@Zhangxiaomei

4.According to Wang Xingjuan, .

A.people of higher education won’t easily lose temper

B.people under stress tend to have domestic violence

C.people in lower social status often beat their wives

D.people with senior jobs seldom have family trouble
