Stop eating yourself stupid we all know that poor nutrition can lead to bad health and even weight gain. Now add “lack of intelligence” to the growing list. A recent study has found that what you eat could very likely play a role in how smart you are.

According to the study, rats fed a high-fat diet for 10 days showed signs of weakness and even had trouble finding food that was waiting for them. 1.  Actually a high-fat diet could weaken our intelligence--but so can a low-calorie diet. The trick appears to lie in finding a nice balance.

Here are ways to achieve that happy balance and make you smarter through diet, exercise and improving your brain power.

Figure out how many calories you need to maintain your weight. __2.__ If you need to drop a few pounds, take away the number you get by 400 calories; consume that number of calories each day until you drop the weight.

__3.__Aim for healthy foods that include good amounts of protein, fiber, fruits and vegetables, healthy whole grains, healthy fats and plenty of water. Well! Remember: All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Read a book. Try a new recipe. Do some puzzles. __4.__

Exercise regularly with a positive attitude. Aim for at least three 30-minute training sessions a week(but more is better). I like simple exercise such as walking, but anything that raises the heart rate is good. _5._  Combine them! Some people like to listen to classical music such as Bach or Mozart, but rock music lovers will be happy to learn that this kind of music can help make them smarter as well.

A.You may be fond of music, too.

B.Your health depends on your exercise plan.

C.Aim to get this number of calories each day.

D.Don’t forget to exercise your mind while doing so.

E.You may be wondering what this has to do with us.

F.These are all good ways to help increase your intelligence.

G.Eat the right foods in addition to getting the right number of calories.

【答案】

1.E

2.C

【解析】

试题分析:本文主要讲述的是我们吃的东西对我们的智力也是有一定的影响的,所以我们要注意饮食的合理性。

1.E 推理题。根据前一句rats fed a high-fat diet for 10 days showed signs of weakness and even had trouble finding food that was waiting for them.可知给老鼠喂10天富含脂肪的食物,这些老鼠就会显示出智力方面的下降。那么这样的问题好不好出现在人类的身上呢。故E项符合上下文。

2.C 推理题。根据下一句Figure out how many calories you need to maintain your weight.可知你要搞清楚要维持你的体重,你需要多少的能量。然后你就努力每天都摄入这么多的能力即可。故C正确。

3.G 推理题。根据下一句Aim for healthy foods that include good amounts of protein可知我们要立志获得健康的食物,这些食物要含有适合数量的营养物质和能量。故G正确。

4.F 根据前面2行Remember: All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Read a book. Try a new recipe. Do some puzzles可知劳逸结合,阅读等等都是提高我们智力的好方法。故F项符合上下文。

5.A 推理题。根据前面2句. I like simple exercise such as walking, but anything that raises the heart rate is good可知任何能够提高智力的方法都好。

Can trees talk? Yes--but not in words. Scientists have reasons to believe that trees do communicate with each other. Not long ago, researchers learned some surprising things. First a willow tree(柳树)attacked in the woods by caterpillars(毛毛虫)changed the chemistry of its leaves and made them taste so terrible that the caterpillars got tired of the leaves and stopped eating them. Then even more astonishing, the tree sent out a special vapour--a signal causing its neighbours to change the chemistry of their own leaves and make them less tasty.

Communication, of course, doesn't need to be always in words. We can talk to each other by smiling, raising our shoulders and moving our hands. We know that birds and animals use a whole vocabulary of songs, sounds, and movements. Bees dance their signals, flying in certain patterns that tell other bees where to find nectar(花蜜)for honey. So why shouldn't trees have ways of sending messages?

Rules on how to be a fit kid

Being fit is a way of saying a person eats well, gets a lot of physical exercise, and has a healthy weight.   1.  If you’re a kid who wants to be fit, here are three rules to live by.

1. Eat a variety of foods.

You may have a favorite food, but the best choice is to eat a variety.   2.   Taste new foods and old ones you haven’t tried for a while. Some foods, such as green vegetables, are more pleasing the older you get. Shoot for at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day--two fruits and three vegetables.

2.    3.

What does it feel like to be full? When you’re eating, notice how your body feels and when your stomach feels comfortably full. Sometimes, people eat too much because they don’t notice when they need to stop eating.   4.   And over a period of time, overeating can lead to unhealthy weight gain.

3. Limit screen time.

What’s screen time? It’ s the amount of time you spend watching TV or DVDs, playing video games, and using the computer. The more time you spend on these sitting-down activities, the less time available for active stuff, like basketball, bike riding and swimming.   5.

These rules aren’t magic. However, follow them most of the time and you can become a fit kid sooner or later.

A. Drink water and milk.

B. Listen to your body.

C. Eating too much can make you feel uncomfortable.

D. There’re a lot of discussions these days about fit kids.

E. Try to spend no more than 2 hours a day on screen time.

F. Ask your parents to help you do your favorite activities regularly.

G. If you eat different foods, you’re more likely to get the nutrients your body needs.

Dr. Sylvia Earle wants you to stop eating fish. It's not because fish are endangered, though wild fish stocks in many oceans are very low. It's not because they're bad for you, though fish in many areas are exposed to poisonous substances in the water. It’s because they're smart.

"Fish are sensitive, they have personalities," says the marine biologist. For Earle, eating a fish would be like eating a dog or a cat. "I would never eat anyone I know personally."

There's a lot more to fish than meets the eye: they talk to each other, they like to be touched, and they engage in behavior that can seem very human. They can remember things and learn from experience. Earle and a growing number of animal rights activists see these as strong arguments against eating fish altogether.

The activists also point out that fish feel pain and fish suffer horribly on their way from the sea to the supermarket. "While it may seem conspicuous that fish are able to feel pain, like every other animal, some people think of fish as swimming vegetables," says Dr. Lynne Sneddon. "Really, it's kind of a moral question. Is the enjoyment you get from fishing (or eating fish) more important than the pain of the fish?"

Fishermen and (fried) fish lovers are skeptical. "I've never seen a smart fish," says Marie Swaringen as she finishes off a plate of fish at a Seattle seafood restaurant. "If they were very smart, they wouldn't get caught."

"For years, everyone's been telling us to eat fish because it's so good for us," says another diner. "Now I've got to feel guilty while I'm eating my fish? What are they going to think of next? Don't eat salad because cucumbers have feelings?"

1.According to Dr. Sylvia Earle, he would stop eating fish as a result of the following reasons EXCEPT ___________ .

A.Fish are sensitive and have personalities

B.He knows fish very well

C.Fish are dangerous to eat because the water is polluted

D.Fish are clever

2.Dr. Lynne Sneddon describes the behavior of eating fish in a(n) _______ tone.

A.opposed          B.optimistic          C.indifferent         D.supportive

3.Which word below can take the place of the underlined word “conspicuous” in Paragraph 4?

A.obvious           B.easy              C.impossible         D.necessary

4.It can be inferred from the last paragraph that _____________ .

A.Human beings should stop eating fish

B.We would feel guilty if we continued eating fish

C.People eat fish because fish are delicious

D.Cucumber is a kind of vegetable or fruit

5.What was the author’s purpose when writing this passage?

A.To advise people to stop eating fish.

B.To introduce a topic of whether people should eat fish.

C.To advise people not to stop eating fish.

D.To tell us that fish will feel pain when caught and transported.
