阅读表达(共5小题;每小题3分,满分15分)

阅读下面的短文,并根据短文后的要求答题。(请注意问题后的字数要求)

[1]When we were children, it seemed that father knew everything. When we grew up and father became older, sometimes we quarreled about our own views. So I try to get on well with father.

[2]Remember the age of father. Being aware of father’s age will help us to understand him better. He has lived in the years when attitudes towards matters, such as poverty, unemployment, higher education, were quite different from those in our time. Thus it is impossible for him to change mind totally.

[3]Listen to father. As we grew up, what our father has told us often sounds not sophisticated(圆滑的)enough from the world we live in today. Yet I have found that sometimes the words that my father told me long time ago are remarkably useful. If father knows we respect his point of view, even if we do not share it, it will help him feel close to us.

[4]Remember that father has a past. When he was young, he lived a hard life. He came from remote village. How to stay in a strange city and how to earn money are problems he met first. He must work hard and face all kinds of difficulties. Full of wisdom, courage and hope,

at last. It is a part of his life that must have affected him deeply.

[5]Accept personality from father. Most of us have mixed feelings about taking after our father. We might feel fine about it when we are considering his admirable qualities. But we have realized that we and our fathers share those characteristics we do not admire. Accepting what we have inherited(继承)is important.

[6]Adopting any approach to get on well with our father is the issue of how we manage ourselves. We should keep a sense of humor with our father. Remember we will have our own child and surely we will be parents. Accepting and understanding our father is a part of our life.

They say that soon, we will be able to receive more than 500 television networks on cable or by satellite. Some people think that it’s useless to have that many channels. Their usual criticism(批评) goes something like this: "I already get more channels on my TV than I have time to watch. No one needs to see that much TV. There’s not enough time in the day to watch all that!"They also say that most of what’s on television now isn’t worth watching in the first place.
I think they’re missing the point. If the local library wanted to add another 5,000 books, would we say, "That’s silly, we’ll never have time to read all those books"? The point is that we would have more choices.
I don’t believe that most people should watch more television. And if we had 500 or even 1,000 channels to choose from, we wouldn’t have to spend more time watching TV. We would, however, have more programs to choose from. That means that the quality of our viewing time would be improved.
I think the more channels we have, the better. Give me more choices! If they’re not worth my time, I’ll just hit the "off" button.

Most people call it "body language" —the clues(线索) to the meaning that we get from gesture, facial expressions, posture —everything that isn't spoken.Experts call it "nonverbal communication," but it means the same thing: a second source of human communication that is often more reliable to understanding what is really going on than the words themselves.
Understanding body language is important to success, whether in the business world or in our personal lives. However, most of our ideas about body language are wrong, according to modern communication research.
There is a belief that people with shifty (变化的) eyes are probably lying. As Paul Ekman says, "When we asked people how they could tell if someone was lying, too much blinking(眨眼) and shifty eyes were the winners. But sometimes people act like that because they are shy.Liars pretend to be calm in order not to be caught.
Ekman goes on to argue against such a wrong belief.Although this kind of body language is probably an expression of nervousness, it is not always because the person is lying.Shyness can, for example, make people shift their eyes.To understand what someone's behavior means, you have to watch them carefully.
There is also a belief that when meeting someone, the more eye contact, the better. As a result people would like to make initial (开始的) contact in formal situations, like a job interview, by staring fixedly at the other human.Yet Ekman points out that most of us are comfortable with eye contact lasting a few seconds, but any eye contact that is longer than that can make us nervous.
In short, you must carefully consider the speaker and the speaking environment.Experts suggest that unless you know about someone's basic communication style, you will have little hope in understanding their true feelings through body language. In other words, body language carries important but not always true messages.

I entered high school having read hundreds of books. But I was not a good reader. Merely bookish, I lacked a point of view when I read. Rather, I read in order to get a point of view. I searched books for good expressions and sayings, pieces of information, ideas, themes-anything to enrich my thought and make me feel educated. When one of my teachers suggested to his sleepy tenth-grade English class that a person could not have a "complicated idea" until he had read at least two thousand books, I heard the words without recognizing either its irony (嘲讽) or its very complicated truth. I merely determined to make a list of all the books I had ever

read. Strict with myself, I included only once a title I might have read several times. (How, after all, could one read a book more than once?) And I included only those books over a hundred pages in length. (Could anything shorter be a book?)

There was yet another high school list I made. One day I came across a newspaper article about an English professor at a nearby state college. The article had a list of the "hundred most important books of Western Civilization." "More than anything else in my life," the professor told the reporter with finality, "these books have made me all that I am." That was the kind of words I couldn't ignore. I kept the list for the several months it took me to read all of the titles. Most books, of course, I hardly understood. While reading Plato's The Republic, for example, I needed to keep looking at the introduction of the book to remind myself what the text was about. However, with the special patience and superstition (迷信) of a schoolboy, I looked at every word of the text. And by the time I reached the last word, pleased, I persuaded myself that I had read The Republic and seriously crossed Plato off my list.

1. On hearing the teacher's suggestion of reading, the writer thought______.

    A. one must read as many books as possible.

    B. a student should not have a complicated idea.

    C. it was impossible for one to read two thousand books.

    D. students ought to make a list of the books they had read

2. While at high school, the writer_________.

    A. had plans for reading                  B. learned to educate himself

    C. only read books over 100 pages           D. read only one book several times

3. The underlined phrase "with finality" in the second paragraph probably means_________.

    A. firmly         B. clearly        C. proudly        D. pleasantly

4. The writer's purpose in mentioning "The Republic" is to________.

    A. explain why it was included in the list[

    B. describe why he seriously crossed it off the list

    C. show that he read the books blindly though they were hard to understand

    D. prove that he understood most of it because he had looked at every word

5. The writer provides two book lists to________.

    A. show how he developed his point of view

    B. tell his reading experience at high school

    C. introduce the two persons' reading methods

    D. explain that he read many books at high school
