Day 1

I first heard of “Show Racism (种族歧视) the Red Card” when my friend Jill asked me to support their work. Basically, it’s an organization which uses professional (职业的) footballers to help fight racism in sport and society. A few weeks later, he asked me if I wanted to do a bit more for them. I thought he probably meant for me to give money or do some voluntary work. But then he told me that a group of about 20 people were getting sponsored (赞助) to play the highest ever game of rugby (橄榄球) at 5,140 meters on Mount Everest.

Day 4

We’re making our way up to the base camp — that’s where most climbers start their final climb to the top — and then, we’ll play our game. Today we started out at 8 am. We had to cross three suspension bridges (悬索桥). One of them was so high that you couldn’t see the bottom. Then we walked through some beautiful forest areas before we started a two-hour uphill hike to Namche Bazaar.

Day 10

Base camp is basically just a lot of stones and tents. The walk up was really exhausting. Maybe if I was fitter, I wouldn’t find this so hard, but then it was not just me — all of us got very short of breath.

Day 11

Today we played our game. It was supposed to be a “friendly” game, and last night, we had agreed we’d just walk and not run. However, it was a really heated game and two players were even sent off. We only played for 14 minutes. I think someone would have got hurt if we’d played any longer! My team won and I scored the last try! Of course, none of this matters. What’s really important is that we did it and we’ve raised a load of money.

1.The first time the author was asked to do something for Jill’s work, he _____.

A. got a big shock

B. accepted his request

C. looked down upon Jill

D. spread the news to 20 people

2.What can we learn about the game of rugby on Mount Everest?

A. It got little attention.

B. It was a bit competitive.

C. It ended because someone was injured.

D. It was held on the top of Mount Everest.

3.The author’s trip to Mount Everest can be described as _____.

A. frightening and fruitless

B. relaxing and interesting

C. hard but successful

D. short but fantastic

Last night, when watched the annual Ten People Who Moved Chinese the Most in the CCTV, I learn some deeds of helping the poor children. It makes me have a firm belief what there are still many kind but generous people around us. What do Tom Sawyer and jumping frogs have in common? Stories about both of them were created by one man:Mark Twain. Born Samuel Langhorne Clemens, Mark Twain was his pen name. When Twain was 4, his family moved to Hannibal, Missouri, lying on the west bank of the Mississippi. Twain grew up there and was attracted greatly with life along the river - the steamboats, the big wooden boats, and the people who worked on them.

The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras Country is one of Twain's best-loved short stories, and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is one of his most famous novels. Both these works are celebrated by events held during National Tom Sawyer Days. There's also a fence-painting competition to see who can paint the fastest. The idea for this competition comes from a scene in Tom Sawyer, in which Tom has been told to paint the fence in front of the house he lives in. It's a beautiful day, and he would rather be doing anything else. As his friends walk by, he persuades them to paint with him for fun, and they all join in the "fun". By the end of the day, the fence has three coats of paint!

Although the story of Tom Sawyer is not true, it's based on fact. If you go to Hannibal,, you'll see the white fence, which still stands at Twain's boyhood home.

1.Mark Twain created Tom Sawyer and jumping frogs .

A. at the age of four B. in the same book

C. in different stories D. on the steamboats

2.The fence-painting competition comes from .

A. Mark Twain's suggestion

B. a story in Jumping Frog

C. the life of people in boats

D. a scene in Tom Sawyer

3.The sentence "the fence has three coats of paint!" means that" ".

A. all of Tom's friends wear three coats

B. the fence has been painted three times

C. three new coats are hanging on the fence

D. they have drawn three coats on the fence

Life can be so wonderful, full of adventure and joy. It can also be full of challenges, setbacks(挫折)and heartbreaks. Whatever our circumstances, we generally still have dreams, hopes and desires—that little something more we want for ourselves and our loved ones. Yet knowing we can have more can also create a problem, because when we go to change the way we do things, up come the old patterns and pitfalls(陷阱)that stopped us from seeking what we wanted in the first place.

This tension between what we feel we can have and what we are seemingly able to have is niggling(烦人的) suffering, the anxiety we feel. This is where we usually think it is easier to just give up. But we are never meant to let go of the part of us that knows we can have more. The intelligence behind that knowing is us—the real us. It’s the part that believes in life and its possibilities. If you drop that, you begin to feel a little “dead” inside because you are dropping “you”.

So, if we have this capability but somehow life seems to keep us stuck, how do we break these patterns?

Decide on a new course and make one decision at a time. This is good advice for a new adventure or just getting through today’s challenges.

While, deep down, we know we can do it, our mind—or the minds of those close to us—usually say we can’t. That isn’t a reason to stop, it’s just the mind, that little man or woman on your shoulder, trying to talk you out of something again. It has done it many times before. It’s all about starting simple and doing it now.

Decide and act before overthinking. When you do this you may feel a little, or large, release from the jail of your mind and you will be on your way.

1.It can be inferred from the first two paragraphs that we should ________.

A. slow down and live a simple life

B. be careful when we choose to change

C. stick to our dreams under any circumstances

D. be content with what we already have

2.Which of the following best explains the underlined part in the last paragraph?

A. Escape from your punishment.

B. Realization of your dreams.

C. Freedom from your tension.

D. Reduction of your expectations.

3.What does the author intend to tell us?

A. It’s easier than we think to get what we want.

B. It’s important to learn to accept sufferings in life.

C. It’s impractical to change our way of thinking.

D. It’s harder than we expect to follow a new course.
