    4．Dear Daughter，
    As we drove off from Columbia，I wanted to write to tell you all that is on my mind．First，I want to tell you how proud we are．Getting into Columbia is a real testament （证明） of what a great well-rounded student you are．You should be as proud of yourself as we are．
    Your college years will be the most important of your life．It is in college that you will discover what learning is about．This will be the period when you go from teacher taught to master inspired，after which you must become a self-learner．So do take each subject seriously，and even if what you learn is of no practical use in real life，the learning skills you get will be something you will value forever．
    Follow your passion in college．Take courses you think you will enjoy，don't be bothered by what others think or say，but make up your own mind．Most importantly，make true friends and be happy．Don't worry about their hobbies，grades，looks，or even personalities．
    Start planning early what you'd like to do．Where would you like to live？What would you like to learn？I think your plan to study fashion is good，and you should decide where you want to be，and get onto the right courses．I will always be there for you，but the time has come for you to be in the driver's seat-this is your life，and you need to be in control．Being in control feels great．Try it，and you'll love it!
    So please treasure your college years-make the best use of your free time，become an independent thinker in control of your destiny，and learn through your successes and challenges．
    May your years at Columbia be the happiest of your life，and may you grow into just what you dream to be．

    Two months later，I shared the newspaper obituary with the banjo teacher．We both shed tears for a surprisingly clever banjo student．
    Several months later，an old woman came into the store carrying a plant．"This is for Carl's banjo teacher，"she said．"I'm his wife，Mary．"

    16．You are watching a film in which two men are having a fight．They hit one another hard．At the start they only fight with their fists．But soon they begin hitting one another over the heads with chairs．And so it goes on until one of the men crashes （撞击） through a window and falls thirty feet to the ground below．He is dead！Of course he isn't really dead．With any luck he isn't even hurt．Why？Because the men who fall out of high windows or jump from fast moving trains，who crash cars or even catch fire，are professionals．They do this for a living．These men are called stuntmen．That is to say，they perform tricks．There are two sides to their work．They actually do most of the things you see on the screen．For example，they fall from a high building．However，they do not fall on to hard ground but on to empty cardboard boxes covered with a mattress （床垫）．Again，when they hit one another with chairs，the chairs are made of soft wood and when they crash through windows，the glass is made of sugar!But although their work depends on trick of this sort，it also requires a high degree of skill and training．Often a stuntman's success depends on careful timing．For example，when he is"blown up"in a battle scene，he has to jump out of the way of the explosion just at the right moment．
      Naturally stuntmen are well paid for their work，but they lead dangerous lives．They often get seriously injured，and sometimes killed．A Norwegian stuntman，for example，skied over the edge of a cliff （悬崖） a thousand feet high．His parachute failed to open，and he was killed．In spite of all the risks，this is no longer a profession for men only．Men no longer dress up as women when actresses have to perform some dangerous action，for nowadays there are stuntgirls，too．

    14．Whenever my dog，Barney，comes into the house after having been for a ride in the car，he runs to the pen（围栏） we have set up for him by the back door．It's not something we intentionally trained him to do．The habit came simply because my husband tended to put him in his pen whenever they came in．After doing it a few times，Barney just figures that's what you do when you come inside after a car ride．

    For example，when you were a kid，you may have been told not to"talk back"and to just keep quiet about things that were bothering you．These are habits that might have worked to keep you safe and out of trouble when you were young．
    Now that you're grown up，you may be finding that these previous strategies are actually causing you problems．In a relationship，not communicating isn't going to work as your partner can't read your mind．What works when you're a child may not work when you become an adult．
    When you decide you need to change your thoughts，your brain may at first feel that it's not a safe thing to do．Lots of practice and years of experience says it's not．Also，you don't know to question the thought．It's a truth for you．The trick is to look at your results and see if your thoughts are the cause．Be willing to question your thinking and ask yourself if there are thoughts that are hindering （妨碍） you．As you are now in a different phase of your life，different strategies may be needed．
