Dear Sir/Madam,

I’m one of your customer. I ordered a set of books on your website two weeks ago, but I didn’t received it until yesterday. And much to my disappointment, the books were too poorly packed up that the cover of one book were torn. To make matters worse, it is not a complete set, as I found one book missed.

I’m sorry to have received such poorly service, and I believe I have every right ask you to deal with this problem. I hope you either return my money back or deliver a new set of books to me. Beside, I’d like to be informed of the process of your deal with my complaint.

I’m looking forward to your reply.

Is beauty something always positive? Almost everyone thinks attractive people are happier and healthier, have better marriages and have more respectable jobs. Personal advisors give them better advice for finding jobs. Even judges are softer on attractive defendants. But in the executive(主管的) circle, beauty can become a disadvantage.

While attractiveness is a positive factor for a man on his way up the executive ladder, it is harmful to a woman. Handsome male executives were considered having more honesty than plainer men; effort and ability were thought to lead to their success. Attractive female executives were considered to have less honesty than unattractive ones; their success was connected not with ability but with factors such as luck.

All unattractive women executives were thought to have more honesty and to be more capable than the attractive female executives. Why are attractive women not thought to be able? An attractive woman has an advantage in traditionally female jobs, but an attractive woman in a traditionally manly position appears to lack the manly qualities required.

This is true even in politics, “When the only clue is how he or she looks, people treat men and women differently, ” says Anne Bowman, who recently published a study on the effects of attractiveness on political candidates(候选人). She asked 125 college students to rank two groups of photographs, one of men and one of women, in order of attractiveness. The students were told the photographs were of candidates for political offices. They were asked to rank them again, in the order they would vote for them.

The results showed that attractive males completely defeated unattractive men, but the women who had ranked most attractive unchangeably received the fewest votes.

1. In traditionally female jobs, attractiveness ________.

A. makes women look more honest and capable

B. strengthens the manly qualities required

C. often enables women to succeed quickly

D. is of no importance to women

2.Bowman’s experiment shows that when it comes to politics, attractiveness _____.

A. turns out to be a disadvantage to men

B. has as little effect on men as on women

C. affects men and women alike

D. is more of a disadvantage than an advantage to women

3.According to the passage, people’s views on beauty are often _____.

A. practical B. one – sided

C. old fashioned D. supportive

4. The passage is mainly about _____.

A. the advantages of being attractive

B. the disadvantages of being attractive

C. equal rights for women

D. the importance of appearance

With more recognition than Halloween and less than Christmas, Valentine’s Day as an imported festival faces a dangerous situation in China, where it’s caught between forces of tradition and fashion. Valentine’s Day has a natural enemy in China. And it is not the Chinese equivalent, which falls on the seventh day of the seventh month on the lunar calendar, usually around half a year away from Feb. 14. It is the Spring Festival, also known as the Chinese New Year, that will influence the Feast of Saint Valentine.

The real disagreement between East and West probably took place over a century ago, when China’s door was forced open by Western powers and Chinese scholars supported westernization as a means to strengthenour nation’s ability to compete. The introduction of the solar calendarand Western measurements was both an acknowledgment of their influence and an effort to be accepted by the world order.

For a full century, we have had two systems running in parallel. When it comes to the eventual outcome, practicality usually beats all other concerns. Laws can help, such as the three traditional festivals of Tomb Sweeping, Dragon Boat and Mid-Autumn gaining legal status in 2008 and giving every Chinese citizen a day off, but laws cannot push what people have no feelings for. So, the celebration or boycott of imported holidaysor homegrown ones should be no cause for worry. If they are irrelevant, no social media will change the public’s mind; and if they are accepted, there must be a need which they happen to satisfy.

Since we have no global Qin Shihuang to force one system on every country, we can always rely on a dual(双重) approach by which we share with the outside world on one hand but preserve our own ways of life on the other.

1. What does the author say about Valentine’s Day in China?

A. It is better received than Christmas.

B. It brings potential danger to people.

C. It becomes increasingly popular.

D. It happens to have a natural enemy.

2. The underlined word “equivalent” in the first paragraph refers to ________.

A. theChinese Valentine’s Day

B. theSpring Festival

C. fashion

D. custom

3. Which of the following can decide what to celebrate according to the author?

A. Laws. B. Media. C. Needs. D. Tradition.

4. The author believes that ________.

A. the conflict between East and West causes more trouble

B. two different systems of festivals can co-existin China

C. westernization is a symbol of a nation’s competitive ability

D. homegrown festivals are more important than imported ones

Are you an optimist? Do you look at your glass and see it as half full? Do you believe that every cloud has a silver lining and that generally things turn out for the best? Do you believe that if something is meant to be, it will be? If you reply “yes” to all of these questions, then you are an optimist. You probably are enthusiastic, cheerful and outgoing. You may well be successful at work and in love.

But you may be misguided because things don’t turn out for the best. You may believe that when one door closes another one opens (for example, you may fail to obtain a new job, and another chance will come around soon). Wrong. When one door closes, another door slams in your face. That’s bitter reality.

Now a book has been published which confirms what we pessimists (悲观者) have suspected all along. It’s called The Positive Power of Defensive Pessimism. Its author argues that defensive pessimism can lead to positive results. Defensive pessimism is a strategy used to manage fear, anxiety and worry. Defensive pessimists prepare for things by setting low outcomes for themselves. They carefully consider everything that may go wrong and plan for ways to handle these problems. And this gives them a sense of control. Lawrence Sanno, a psychology professor, says, “What’s interesting about defensive pessimists is that they tend to be very successful people, so their low opinion of the situation’s outcomes is not realistic. They use it to motivate themselves to perform better. ”

So far, so good. This is not rocket science. Defensive pessimists prepare carefully and consider what might go wrong, whether at work, on a date or even in a sports game. It makes sense to have a back-up plan. There are many sayings in English urging caution. For example, “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket,” and “Don’t count your chickens until they hatch.” To have a confident and optimistic approach to life’s problems is good. But listen to what Woody Allen, the American comedian says, “Confidence is what you have before you understand the problem.”

There are pros and cons of being an optimist and a pessimist. Don’t feel bad if you see the glass half empty. You are a realist. But lighten up and hook up with someone who sees the same glass half full.

1. The writer would probably describe himself as ________.

A. a realist B. a scientist

C. an optimist D. an artist

2.Defensive pessimists are likely to make use of ________ to help achieve success.

A. the final outcome B. their low opinion

C. people’s motivation D. their performance

3.The underlined sentence “This is not rocket science” in Paragraph 4 means “________”.

A. it is out of the question

B. it is quite simple to understand

C. it is far beyond reach

D. it is not a worthwhile thing to do

4. Which of the following English expressions would a defensive pessimist probably believe?

A. “Every cloud has a silver lining.”

B. “Whatever will be, will be.”

C. “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.”

D. “The glass is half full not half empty.”

Sailors used to speak of a “Jack”when they meant a flag which was set near the bow of a sailing ship. The flag showed the country to which the ship belonged. The Union Jack became the flag of Great Britain. Australia's flag has the Union Jack in the top left hand corner together with the stars of the Southern Cross. They have kept this small part of Britain on their flag because their country was first settled by people from Britain.

Australia's flag is the same color as the Union Jack—red, white and blue. The act of joining together is called a “Union”. The Union Jack was the name of the flag made when England, Scotland and Ireland joined together to make one country.

It all began in 1707 when England and Scotland joined together to become one nation. A flag was made using two crosses—one for the patron saint of each country. The word “patron” means protector. Many centuries before the English had taken St George as their patron saint, his emblem (标志) was a red cross on a white background. The Scottish patron saint was St Andrew. In memory of him, they used a white cross on a blue background. This cross was shaped like the letter “X”. The new flag was a mixture of both flags with two sets of crosses. When Ireland joined England and Scotland in 1800, another cross was added. St Patrich's cross of Ireland was red and also shaped like an “X”. All three flags now made up the Union Jack.

2.Why does Australia have the Union Jack in its flag?
