    1．Scientists in Mexico have just begun a new study of one of the world's biggest pyramids（金字塔）：the Pyramid of the Sun，north of Mexico City．They're putting lots of small，high-tech machines under the pyramid to try to unlock some of its secrets．For thousands of years，people have tried to uncover the secrets of the pyramids．
    The people who built the pyramids made lots of secret doors and rooms to stop robbers from finding the treasures inside．However，there always have been some smart thieves in history．Now，almost all of Egypt's pyramids have been robbed，including the Great Pyramid of Khufu，which is the largest pyramid in the world．It is the only one of the ancient wonders of the world that is still standing．
    In AD 820，an Arab king named Abdullah AL Manum got a group of workers to dig their way into the Great Pyramid and have a look．Inside the pyramid，they found three rooms-the Queen's Chamber，the Grand Gallery and the King's Chamber．But to their surprise，the men didn't find the treasures they wanted．The Queen's and King's Chambers were both empty!Where were the King's mummy and his treasures？Had someone already taken them away？The huge stone doors at the pyramid's entrance were still closed when AL Manum's men went inside．How had the thieves got in and out？
    Since then，many people have gone inside the Great Pyramid to have a look or to try to take things．But still，no other chambers or walkways have been found．
    In 2002，an American team made the most recent visit to the Great Pyramid．Scientists sent a robot into the pyramid，but they only found a mysterious locked stone door．

    17．The Gunpowder Plot was conspiracy （阴谋） to kill King James I，as well as the members of the House of Lords and Commons at the re-opening of Parliament．It was designed by a group of Catholics in protest against the anti-Catholic laws that were being introduced by the king．
    Robert Catesby was the leader of the group．It was he and his cousin，Thomas Wintour，and two other friends，Thomas Percy and John Wright，who formed the center of the group．They were joined by nine more men； among them was Guy Fawkes，from the city of York in the north of England．
    Fawkes found a store room directly under the House of Lords and rented it out under the false name of John Johnson．The conspirators stored thirty-six barrels of gunpowder there，and Fawkes，who was an explosives expert，was to light the fuses （引信） on 5th November 1605．
    The plot failed because one of the conspirators，Francis Tresham，sent a letter to his relative，who was a member of the House of Lords．The letter warned him not to attend the opening ceremony of Parliament．The letter was passed on to the authorities，who took action．
    Guy Fawkes was found in the cellar on the night of 4th November with the thirty-six barrels and a number of fuses．He was imprisoned and ill-treated，eventually giving away the names of the conspirators．
    Soldiers of the king surrounded Holbeach House，in the Midlands，where they knew the conspirators to be hiding．In the fight that followed，four of them were shot dead，including Catesby and Percy，who were actually killed by the same bullet．The others were imprisoned and hanged along with Guy Fawkes on 31st January 1606．
    These days，on 5th November，children all over Britain celebrate Guy Fawkes Night by building huge bonfires and lighting fireworks．It's a family tradition and an occasion to eat potatoes baked by the flames．There is always a'guy'on top of the fire，a model of Guy Fawkes，dressed in the clothes of the 17th century．

    9．When my daughter Sally was five，I bought Grimm's Fairy Tales and read Snow White to her one night．At the end of the original Grimm tale，Snow White's stepmother is made to put on red-hot iron shoes and dance until she falls down dead．

    Nicobobinus，the boy who could do anything，came out of my desire for a more innocent world．He lived a 1ong time ago，in a city called Venice．Only his best friend，Rosie，knew he could，and nobody took any notice of anything Rosie said，because she was always having wild ideas anyway．
    Nicobobinus was so different that it turned out to be an instant hit．The Times called me"an author setting out to rival the classic fairytales"．I asked Sally what she thought of Nicobobinus．She said it was her favourite．

    After the college entrance examination，most students will face a seriously question：Should they choose a good major and a good university first？Some students preferred to consider majors first so that they can learn which they are interested in．This will make it possible for them to take their most favorite job in the future．Therefore，those who think differently believe that the learning environment is important and that graduates from a leading university is more likely to find good jobs．
    In my opinion，the best choice is good major at a good university．If we cannot obtain all，the first thing to consider is a good major，because wherever they study，we can still achieve a lot in a certain field if we try our best．

    There is no doubt whether scores are important for students．So today when I see the score，

    90，on my test paper，my happiness was beyond words．I believed Mom was sure to praise for

    me．On getting home，I raised a test paper before her and said proudly，"Mom，look at my
