It was the hottest time of the year in southern California. Steve, a star basketball player at the University of California, with his cousin Zach, had planned a camping trip in the Great National Forest for their summer vacation.

The boys gathered clothes and supplies, and began their great adventure with Brady the dog early in the morning. Upon arrival, Steve pulled over to the side of the road along the bank of the river. "A wonderful place for fishing," Steve exclaimed in delight. Zach nodded in agreement.

At high noon, the sun was scorching hot. With a good harvest of fish, the boys marched into the forest with Brady following them. After a long walk, they found a clearing that was ideal for a campsite. The camp was set up immediately as Steve knew all the tricks of an experienced wilderness camper.

An afternoon nap was absolutely a special treat in mid-summer. However, the boys were waken up by the fierce barks of Brady. Outside, heavy smoke filled the air and wind-blown flame was skipping from the top of one tree to another. The long dry summer turned the forest into a tinderbox. In a little while, Steve and Zach were inside their tent packing their belongings.

“Let's go! We can make it back to the river!" They headed down against the fire-wind in the direction of the river. But Brady barked a sharp warming. Ahead of them lay a thick curtain of smoke across the track. They would never make it through that. Steve was uneasy for it was hard to find a safe way to escape in the heavy smoke.

Brady lifted his head and snuffed(嗅)the smoke-laden wind. Next moment, the dog bounded away and disappeared down a sharp slope(坡). The boys shouted for him, but he didn't come back. Steve couldn't blame Brady for panicking. He himself wanted to run even though he didn't have a clue which way.

Paragraph 1:

Steve and Zach hadn`t gone far when there was a familiar bark.

【答案】Paragraph 1:

Steve and Zach hadn't gone far when there was a familiar bark. Brady came bounding, stopped directly in front of Steve and hit him with his head, pushing him back toward the slope. But Steve didn't get it. "Then Brady grabbed the boy's jeans and started pulling. The message was clear, but Steve hesitated. Of course he remembered Brady saving his uncle's life when the dog was much younger. Was he still sharp enough to get them through this?

Paragraph2

Brady puled again, in spite of the boy's disbelief, urgently. “OK, big guy, "seeing the fire was touching underbrush nearby, Steve made up his mind. Brady led them back down the slope and into the trees. Several times the big dog stopped. Often he changed directions to find the right way. The boys were so tired but the dog bullied both boys to go on. Steve was almost numb when he heard it-the wonderful sound of rushing water! They made it back to the river.

【题目】 From kindergarten to graduate school there is a nearly unlimited supply of learning resources (资源) for students. These resources come in a variety of forms, all serving a single purpose—to improve learning outcomes for students.

1Educators spend a good deal of time searching for learning resources and are in a position to be approached by educational publishers and software developers. Educators may use open source material from well-known universities like Harvard and MIT or offer learning resources from independent publishers to their students.

While there are a variety of learning resources for all education levels, early-childhood learning resources are probably the most common. A wide range of websites, software and mobile applications are aimed at children and serve as learning resources in math, reading, science, writing, etc. 2

Learning resources for students in high school and college are also abundant. 3While there may be a large number of websites and computer applications that serve as an ancillary (辅助的) resource for a given subject, a teacher may recommend a reference book, biography, or literary work as a resource relevant to the specific area of study.

Many learning resources are designed to reinforce (充实) material taught in the class or simply provide additional help for struggling students. 4The American Disability Act provides the requirements for educational resources for disabled students in the United States, just as the Special Educational Needs and Disability Act in the UK provides for its special needs students.

5Libraries, teachers and other educators, higher learning institutions, and the Internet are all excellent sources for learning resources in nearly every area of study and educational development.

A.Learning resources help teachers save preparation time.

B.Discovering learning resources for students is not difficult.

C.Many of these products are used in classrooms across the globe.

D.But there are also learning resources for students with disabilities.

E.Students can’t learn from one type of instructional material alone.

F.Teachers and professors are the leading experts on learning resources.

G.They often consist of a balance of technology and traditional textbooks.

【题目】 The first study to examine generational differences in perfectionism over the past three decades reports that young people's desire to be flawless has sharply increased over the past thirty years. Today's college-age students are much more likely to have perfectionism than prior generations, according to the new report.

This study was recently published in the journal Psychological Bulletin. For this study, lead author Thomas Curran and co-author Andrew Hill, analyzed data from 41,641 college students in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. They also used the Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale to measure generational changes in perfectionism from the late 1980s to 2016. During their analysis, Curran and Hill investigated three types of perfectionism:

l. Self-oriented perfectionism: having an irrational desire to be perfect on oneself.

2. Other-oriented perfectionism: Placing unrealistic standards of perfection on others.

3. Socially-perfectionism: Feeling excessive expectations of perfection from others.

The statistics are alarming: Between 1989 and 2016, self-oriented perfectionism scores increased by 10 percent, other-oriented perfectionism increased by 16 percent, and socially-perfectionism increased largely by 33 percent.

The rise in perfectionism among college students is driven by a variety of factors, according to Curran. The raw data suggests that the growing use of social media could be fueling the pressure young adults feel to perfect themselves in comparison to others. That said, Curran emphasizes that more research is needed to confirm the relation between an increase in social media usage and increased perfectionism.

Curran also assumes that college students' drive to perfect their grade point average represents a rise in meritocracy (精英教育) among the new generation.

“Today's young people are competing with each other in order to meet societal pressures to succeed and they feel that perfectionism is necessary in order to feel safe, socially connected and of worth.” Curran said.

Andrew Hill sees these findings as a strong call for colleges and policymakers to increase their efforts to control unnecessary competition among young people in order to preserve their mental health. Unfortunately, this may be easier said than done.

1What does the underlined word “flawless” in the first paragraph probably mean?

A.without effortB.without competition

C.without weaknessD.without strength

2What can you infer from the passage?

A.All college students of this generation have serious perfectionism.

B.Self-oriented perfectionism increased the most according to the latest study.

C.The increase in perfectionism is completely driven by some obvious factors.

D.It is uncertain whether increased social media usage causes more perfectionism.

3What's the writer's attitude toward the effect of the study on the change of the situation?

A.Concerned.B.Negative.

C.Positive.D.Critical.

【题目】What it does

The self-cleaning door handle is combining with advanced photocatalytic ( ) and blacklight technology. A light source activates the door’s handle coating, telling it to start cleaning. It can minimize the risk of infection by contact and improve the cleanliness of a space.

How it works

The working principle of the product is that a thin advanced photocatalytic coating can effectively decompose bacteria ( ) on the surface of a substance. A consistent UV light source—inside a transparent glass door handle—is required to activate the door’s handle coating on the outer surface for disinfection, so a generator is used to provide electricity to light up a UV LED lamp by the motion of an opening and closing door. Then, the door handle can clean by itself.

Design process

We made the first version by using stainless steel. However, it caused the door handle to be heavier. Then, we tried aluminum, which made it light and easy to fix. We also improved the generator output which effectively turned energy from door movement into a light source.

How it is different

Our innovative design is simple, effective, and attractive. It has an elegant smooth shape, and its minimalist appearance stands out in today’s world of inventions. Nowadays, people use chemical cleaning materials to clean up public areas but it harms the human body. Our design can be used for a long time and is effective. It can self-clean after each use. In the door lock and door handle market, it is a unique design because there are no similar products.

Future plans

In the future, we will commercialize the product and hope that it can compete on the market with similar products. We are going to connect with public properties, for example, shopping malls, hotels, hospitals and public restrooms, where the risk of spreading infection is higher.

Awards

In addition to winning the James Dyson Award, it has also received the Gold Award, and in 2016, it was featured in the 44th International Geneva Inventions Exhibition.

1How does the self-cleaning door handle function?

A.It controls the door movement automatically.

B.It minimizes the risk of infection by less contact.

C.Chemical cleaning materials are used to clean it up.

D.The light source tells the door handle coating to clean itself.

2Compared with the first version of the product, the present one is ______.

A.safer and cheaperB.cleaner and easier

C.less heavy and more effectiveD.more attractive and expensive

3What do we know about the new invention according to the passage?

A.It has been widely used in public areas.

B.It has received recognition for its innovation.

C.It is quite competitive among similar products.

D.It will replace traditional chemical cleaning materials.
