　　TAIBEI－Increasing numbers of Taiwanese students are joining the island's“China rush”, seeking education on the Chinese mainland．

　　According to official Chinese figures, the number of Taiwanese students admitted into college and postgraduate programmes on the mainland to talled 461 in 1996, 928 in 1997 and 839 in 1998．Although no latest official numbers were available, Netbig.com said this number had risen between 30 to 50 percentannually in the past two years with well over 1,000 entering mainland campuses last year．

　　The Internet site, based in the Chinese city of Shenzhen, provides education service and information on Chinese mainland colleges and universities．“Many Taiwanese believe a Chinese education giving more knowledge about the people and culture in the mainland will increase their chances in the Chinese job market,”Netbig.com vice-president Ingrid Huang said．“I believe it will give me hands-on experience in the business field in the Chinese mainland and a better understanding of the Chinese mainland people,”said Lydia Chang, a 19-year-old majoring in journalism at Shih Shin University．Chang plans to go on to get a master's degree in business administration in Shanghai, which she says offers the best environment for such studies．

　　A journalism graduate student, sumamed Lin, at the National Taiwan University said he would like to study law on the Chinese mainland since“there will be better career prospects for me now that more Taiwanese companies are going there”．Some business executives were sending their children to study in the Chinese mainland．“They hope the children could build up connections which could later become useful in their business operations,”said Yang Chingyao, professor of the Chinese mainland studies．

　　A Netbig.com survey showed the campuses favoured by Taiwanese students included Beijing, Qinghua and Renmin universities in Beijing, and Jinan and Zhongshan universities in Guangzhou．The most popular studies were law, business and Chinese medicine．

　　At present, Chinese Taibei doesn't recognize diplomas earned in the Chinese mainland nor help with any inquiries about studying there．But recognizing the trend, education authorities are giving a final form to a policy accepting certificates(iiE45)from selected universities．

     More than half of rich Americans have not shown their full wealth to their children, a new survey
showed last Tuesday.
     The survey, published by the Bank of America, studied the rich with $ 3 million or more in assets. It
found that "surprisingly few of those surveyed have well－developed plans to preserve and pass on their
assets to their children."
     The majority of the 457 people surveyed are self－made, first－generation rich. Fifty－two percent of parents have chosen not to tell their children just how wealthy they are, and 15 percent have given away

    More than three billion people are at risk from indoor air pollution because of the heating or cooking
fuels they use. Most live in Africa, India and China. They use wood, crop waste, animal waste or coal.
These solid fuels may be the least costly fuels available. But they are also a major cause of health
problems and death.
    The Aprovecho Research Center has been designing cooking stoves for the developing world.
People having less money use wood or biomass for cooking; the richer people use oil and gas. It's
estimated that wood is running out more quickly than oil and gas.
    The group has made stoves using mud, bricks, sheet metal, clay, ceramics and old oil drums. Most
of the stoves look like large, deep cooking pots. They have an opening at the bottom for the fire and

    In the late 1970s, Aprovecho produced a popular stove called the Lorena. The Lorena was good
at reducing smoke and warming homes. But new tests years later found that it was not efficient. The
Lorena used twice as much wood as an open fire, and it took much longer to heat food. Since then,
they have experimented with countless other designs.
    Their goal is to make an inexpensive stove-let's say five dollars-that makes little smoke, and it's safe
for health and reduces global warming and deforestation(采伐森林).
    Aprovecho has now partnered with a stove manufacturer in China. The company is making
Aprovecho's first mass produced stoves. They are said to use 40%-50% less wood than an open fire,
and produce 50%-70% less smoke. A company called StoveTec is selling them through its website for
less than ten dollars. Dean Still says that more than one hundred thousand have been sold so far.
