I believe that families are not only blood relatives, but sometimes people who show up and love you when no one else will.
In May 1977, I was living in a Howard Johnson’s motel off Interstate 10 in Houston. My dad and I 21 a room with two double beds and a bathroom which was too 22 for a 15-year-old girl and her father. Dad’s second marriage was 23 and my stepmother had 24 us both out of the house the previous week. Dad had no 25_ what to do with me. And that’s when my other family 26 .
Barbara and Roland Beach took me into their home 27 their only daughter, Su, my best friend, asked them to. I 28 with them for the next seven years.
Barb washed my skirts the same as Su’s. She 29 I had lunch money, doctors’ appointments, help with homework and nightly hugs. Barbara and Roland attended every football game where Su and I were being cheerleaders. 30 I could tell, for the Beaches there was no 31 between Su and me; I was their daughter, too.
When Su and I 32 college they kept my room the same for the entire four years I attended school. Recently, Barb presented me with an insurance policy they bought when I first moved in with them and had continued to pay on for 23 years.
The Beaches knew 33 about me when they took me in – they had heard the whole story from Su. When I was seven, my mother died and from then on my father relied on other people to _34 his kids. Before I went to live with the Beaches I had believed that life was entirely 35__ and that love was shaky and untrustworthy. I had believed that the only person who would take care of me was me.
36 the Beaches, I would have become a bitter, cynical (愤世嫉俗的) woman. They gave me a(n) 37 that allowed me to grow and change. They kept me from being paralyzed(使瘫痪 ,使麻痹 ,使无能力)by my _38 , and they gave me the confidence to open my heart.
I 39 family. For me, it wasn’t the family that was there on the day I was 40 , but the one that was there for me when I was living in a Howard Johnson’s on Interstate 10.

A 因此; B 因为;C 直到;D 而;根据“Barbara and Roland Beach took me into their home 27 their only daughter, Su, my best friend, asked them to. ”是Barbara and Roland把我带到他们家中;后一句通过分析句子成分可知:主语“their only daughter”谓语为“asked”,是个完整句子,所以用because。

A 全部;B 很少,几乎不; C 一些; D 什么都没有/不,由下文“they had heard the whole story from Su.”
A 提供; B 教育,教; C 鼓励;D 抚养;根据上文“When I was seven, my mother died and from then on my father relied on other people”可知父亲要靠别人抚养他的孩子。
句中“would havebecome”是关键,它决定了前面的空是but for而不是“thanks to”;若选“thanks to”应为:幸亏了他们一家,我才没有变成一个……;很明显,thanks to是最具干扰性。

On Friday morning, I was waiting in the corridor with my class for the physics exam. Glancing back from the front of the queue, I found my best friend Terry, who was treating me like I didn’t exist during the past two weeks, 36 all my calls and messages.
With all the students seated in the exam room, Mr. Reed, our physics teacher, talked to the class and announced the exam. I hated physics and felt it hard to 37 my paper. I was just looking up when a 38 caught my eye. I could hardly believe it! Terry had her phone on her left knee and she was reading from it. Is that how Terry always got good 39 ? I almost put my hand up to tell the teacher, but what would everyone else think of her? However, it wasn’t 40 ! So I nodded to Mr. Reed. He walked 41 down the row of tables. Terry was busy with her phone so that she didn’t even find Mr. Reed had 42 her. She looked up from her phone with a frightened expression. Before she had a chance to explain, Mr. Reed took her 43 and told her to leave the room. Terry started crying as she walked to the door, looking back over her shoulder at me, sad and ashamed.
After the exam, I received a text message from Terry, saying “I’m really 44 that I’ve been avoiding you lately but it’s been the hardest two weeks of my life. My dad has a heart attack and he’s been in hospital. He has a(n) 45 today and I am really worried. I know it is stupid, but I was trying to send a text message to my mum to see how it was going. Then Mr. Reed caught me and thought I was 46 . I wish I’d told you what’s been happening. I know I shouldn’t 47 who my friends are. Will you forgive me?” At these words, from my deep heart sprang up a burst of guilt along with the belief: Friendship is an honor and a gift, and worth the effort to treasure.

Who is setting your standards for you ?
A true story has it that one elder man 36 to jog around the local high school football field. As he huffed and puffed(气喘吁吁) along, the team was 37 . The players soon started running sprints up and down the field. The man told himself “I will 38 keep running until they quit.”
So he ran. And they ran. And he ran some more. And they kept running. And he kept running until he 39 finally run no more. He stopped in 40 . One of the players, equally out of breath, approached him and said in a crying voice, “Boy, I am so glad that you finally stopped. 41 told us we had to keep running 42 the old guy who was jogging !” He was watching them. They were watching him. He was letting them set his 43 , on the contrary, they allow him to set 44 .
My question is this: Are you keeping 45 with somebody else in your daily life? Are you 46 people to set your standards for you? What about your standards, or 47 , for moral behavior or even your way of building up your own characteristics ? Or guidelines for what kind of life 48 you want? Negative or positive? Do you keep pace with those 49 you, or do you decided yourself just 50 you will live your life? The true is that only you are 51 to determine what your standards will be.
Set your standards too low, and you will know only 52 . But set high standards and you can live an immeasurably full and 53 life. For only when you 54 the best that is within yourself, will you experience great living. Just as an old saying goes: “Think big 55 , and win big success.”
Who is setting your standards?
