We all hate speed cameras, don’t we?They’re not there to slow drivers down and lower the road accidents;they just make money for the government. They trick us,cost us cold hard cash, disturb us from driving properly and are unfair.
Well, here’s a surprising thing:what if there were facts that the boring cameras actually saved lives? It’s a conclusion difficult to ignore when you look at what’s happening in France,a country with a historically poor record of road safety.
There were 16,617 road deaths in 1972 in France for example, but that dropped to 8412 by 1995 following rules such as compulsory(强迫的)seat belt wearing in 1990 and a lowering of the blood alcohol limit to 0.05 in 1995.
Last year, the road deaths dropped below 5,000 for the first time,or 4.9 percent less than2004.Comparing road deaths to populating in 2005,that’s about 817 per million people compared with Australia’s 806.
And guess what?Last year the number of speed cameras on French roads reached 1,000 and the government plans to double that within the next three years.
Okey, you know the arguments on the increased traffic safety and cameras. for-inco me, but in seems in France there’s been a major cultural change brought on by radars and other laws. A theer-hour, wine-soaked lunch with a quick rush back to the office is no longer on.
Traveling on the highways,it is rare to see anyone breaking the 130km/h speed limit when one few traveled below it. The speed cameras are clearly signed so drivers know when they are coming There’s even all official web site listing fixed and mobile camera locations and it is updated regularly
Maybe it is because of such transparency by government, rather than the secrecy too often used by authorities in many other countries that more French can enjoy their life thanks to speed cameras

In the 1950s, a family that owned a farm near Beulah, Michigan kept a bull chained to an elm (榆树). The bull paced around the tree, dragging the heavy iron chain, which led to a groove (槽) in the bark . The groove deepened over the years. Though for whatever reason, it did not kill the tree.

After some years, the family took their bull away. They cut the chain, leaving the loop around the tree and one link hanging down.

Then one year, agricultural disaster struck Michigan in the form of Dutch Elm Disease. All of the elms lining the road leading to the farm became infected and died. Everyone thought that the old elm would be the next.

The farm owners considered doing the safe thing: pulling it out and cutting it up into firewood before it died. But they simply could not bring themselves to do it. It was as if the old tree had become a family friend. So they decided to let nature take its course.

Amazingly, the tree did not die. Nobody could understand why it was the only elm still standing in the county!

Plant experts from Michigan State University came out to observe the tree. They observed the scar left by the iron chain, now almost completely covered by bark. The experts decided that it was the chain that saved the elm’s life. They reasoned that the tree must have absorbed so much iron from the chain that it became immune to the virus.

It’s said that what doesn’t kill you will make you stronger. Or, as Earnest Hemingway put it, "Life breaks us all, but afterwards, many of us are strongest at the broken places."

A. They invited plant experts to observe it.

B. They pulled it out and chopped it up into firewood.

C. They prevented it from being infected by the disease.

D. They did nothing and just let it be.

2.Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A. A groove formed because of natural forces.

B. The family decided to keep the tree because they had become attached to it.

C. All of the elms in Beulah, Michigan died of the disease.

D. The plant experts advised the family to chop it down.

3.What actually saved the elm?

A. The bull.   B. The groove.    C. The iron chain.  D. The experts.

4.What would be the best title for the passage?

A. Let nature take its course

B. Strengthened by our wounds

C. Constant dripping wears away a stone

D. Bend, but don’t break

I was painfully shy as a child. In high school I would avoid participating in class discussions. I was too afraid to talk to anyone but my closest friends~ I would think about being less shy, wanting the courage not only to ask a girl out, but to speak up in class and say what I was thinking. Yet, it never happened. Fears showed themselves in such self-conscious questions as, " What will other people think?  What if she says no?" I felt a dark presence in my mind holding me back.

This shyness continued into college. One day, the question occurred to me: Is life shy?

The thought surprised me ! Think of the leaves bursting out in the spring time, the bird singing at dawn, the sheer number of different forms of life, all expressing the wideness and scope of divine life. There's nothing shy about it. Life is everywhere and attention-grabbing (引人注意的). So, if my creator isn't shy about all the life that needs expressing, I don't need to be either.

I realized that if I wanted to overcome fear and shyness, I would have to put this law of life into practice~ Shyness, fear, and loneliness were hindering me from living my life as life: God wanted me to live it. Therefore, I decided to live how life saw me.

One example: I wrote a note to a girl, asking her out on a date. Even as I was writing it, the fears of disaffirmation and unworthiness came to me. This time however, instead of shrinking back and hiding from the fear, I put the note in the campus mail in spite of myself. I thought: whether she says yes or no, it's still right for me not to be shy. I can live with the confidence sent from the source of my life. The girl saw me in class the next day and told me that she would love to go out with me. I should not have been so surprised!

Bit by bit, I was proving that the limited view of myself no longer had control over me.  After college, I worked as a newspaper reporter, earned an advanced degree in theater, became a productive writer (a lifelong dream), met a special woman whom I married, and even got a job teaching at a university.

1.The writer was shy as a child because of______.

A.awareness that life is shy

B.lack of courage to speak out in public

C.fear of others' attitude and reaction

D.failure in his participation in class discussion

2."The law" in Paragraph 4 refers to the fact that______.

A.life is attention-grabbing and divine

B.God treats everything and everyone fairly

C.everything in nature is in the favour of God

D.the creator of life which needs expressing isn't shy

3.It can be learnt from Paragraph 5 that the writer______.

A.didn't hesitate before sending the note

B.wouldn't regret sending the note despite the result

C.was not surprised when the girl agreed to go out

D.believed in God and felt encouraged by the wideness of life

4.The underlined word "disaffirmation" in Paragraph 5 probably means______.

A.rejection          B.laughter           C.regret            D.horror

5.The purpose of writing the text is to______.

A.blame those who are shy and unconfident

B.persuade people to have confidence in their career

C.share the personal experience with the readers

D.prove that the overcome of shyness helps achieve success

The young boy saw me, or rather, he saw the car and quickly ran up to me, eager to sell his Hunches (串) of bananas and bags of peanuts.Though he appeared to be about twelve, he seemed to have already known the bitterness of life.“Banana 300 naira.Peanuts 200 naira.” He said in a low voice.I bargained him down to 200 total for the fruit and nuts. When he agreed, I handed him a 500 naira bill.He didn’t have change, so I told him not to worry. He said thanks and smiled a row of perfect teeth.

When, two weeks later, I saw the boy again, I was more aware of my position in a society where it’s not that uncommon to see a little boy who should be in school standing on the corner selling fruit in the burning sun.My parents had raised me to be aware of the advantage we had been afforded and the responsibility it brought to us. I pulled over and rolled down my window. He had a bunch of bananas and a bag of peanuts ready.I waved them away.“What’s up?” I asked him.“I … I don’t have money to buy books for school.” I reached into my pocket and handed him two fresh 500 naira bills.

“Will this help?” I asked. He looked around nervously before taking the money. One thousand naira was a lot of money to someone whose family probably made about 5,000 naira or less each year.

“Thank you, sir,” he said.“Thank you very much!”

When driving home, I wondered if my little friend actually used the money for schoolbooks.

What  if he’s a swindler (骗子)? And then I wondered why I did it.Did I do it to make myself feel better? Was I using him? Later, I realized that I didn’t know his name or the least bit about him, nor did I think to ask.

Over the next six months, I was busy working in a news agency in northern Nigeria. Sometime after I returned, I went out for a drive. When I was about to pull over, the boy suddenly appeared by my window with a big smile ready on his face. “Oh, gosh! Long time.”  “Are you in school now?” I asked. He nodded. “That’s good,” I said.A silence fell as we looked at each other, and then I realized what he wanted.“Here,” I held out a 500 naira bill.“Take this.” He shook his head and stepped back as if hurt.“What’s wrong?” I asked.“It’s a gift.” He shook his head again and brought his hand from behind his back. His face shone with sweat. He dropped a bunch of bananas and a bag of peanuts in the front seat before he said, “I’ve been waiting to give these to you.”

1.What was the author’s first impression of the boy?

A.He seemed to be poor and greedy.        B.He seemed to have suffered a lot.

C.He seemed younger than his age            D.He seemed good at bargaining.

2.The second time the author met the boy, the boy _____.

A.told him his purpose of selling fruit and nuts

B.wanted to express his thanks

C.asked him for money for his schoolbooks

D.tried to take advantage of him

3.Why did the author give his money to the boy?

A.Because he had enough money to do that.

B.Because he had learnt to help others since childhood.

C.Because he held a higher position in the society.

D.Because he had been asked by the news agency to do so.

4.Which of the following best describes the boy?

A.Brave and polite.                      B.Kind and smart.

C.Honest and thankful.                    D.Shy and nervous.
