People who smoke could lose around one third of their everyday memory, researchers say.
A study by a team at the University of Northumbria has shown that smokers lose more of their memory when compared to non-smokers. And the research also found that those who kicked the habit saw their ability to recollect information restored to almost the same level as non-smokers.
The study involved more than seventy 18-to 25-year-old volunteers and included a tour of the university's campus. Those who took part were asked to recall(回忆;回想)small details, such as music acts listed to play at the students' union and tasks completed at various points---known as a real-world memory test.
Smokers performed badly, remembering just 59 percent of tasks. But those who had given up smoking remembered 74 percent and those who had never smoked recalled 81 percent of tasks.
Dr. Tom Heffernan, who leads Northumbria University's Collaboration for Drug and Alcohol Research Group, said the findings would be useful in anti-smoking campaigns. He said, “Given that there are up to 10 million smokers in the UK and as many as 45 million in America, it's important to understand the effects that smoking has on everyday cognitive function.”
This is the first time that a study has set out to examine whether giving up smoking has an effect on memory. We already know that giving up smoking has huge health benefits to the body, but this study also shows how stopping smoking can bring a series of benefits to cognitive function. The research will now investigate the effects of second-hand smoking on memory, while Dr. Heffernan will look into third-hand smoking, such as toxins (毒素) left on curtains and furniture.
(1)What would be the best title for the passage?

A.It needed young volunteers to complete some tasks.
B.It was about making a tour of the university's campus.
C.It needed volunteers to act at the students' union.
D.It involved a tour and a process of recalling some details.
(4)We can learn from the passage that ___________.

【题目】There are plenty of things you can feel positive knowing about Garfield—the cat who loves lasagna, hates Mondays and adores a teddy bear named Pooky. But last week, without warning, there rose a strange and sudden debate around a question about the famous cat that even creator Jim Davis needed to weigh in on: Is Garfield a boy, a girl, or no gender(性别)at all?

The argument appears to have begun when writer Virgil Texas came across a 2014 Mental Floss interview with Davis where he described his tabby creation Garfield as “not really male or female or any particular race or nationality, young or old.”

In response to the quote(引用),Virgil wrote on Twitter: “FACT:Garfield has no gender. This. Is. Definite.” So sure was he of Garfield‘s true gender status that Virgil even took it upon himself to update the Garfield character Wikipedia page with the information。

But it was quickly clear that not everyone agreed with Virgil‘s edits, and thus began a war over the Wikipedia entry edits. Some mentioned that Garfield is male. Others wrote that it shouldn’t matter at all whether Garfield is male or female. Washington Post reported that the battle took place over 60 hours and eventually ended when Wikipedia shut things down by locking the page.

It was a statement that soon appeared to have been made in hurry as Jim Davis indeed soon joined the debate, shutting everything down in one line to Washington Post: “Garfield is male.” The 71-year-old cartoonist also pointed out that Garfield has a girlfriend, Arlene, and claimed that his 2014 quotes had been “taken out of context”. “I’ve always said that I wanted to work with animals because they’re not regarded as being any particular gender, race, age or ethnicity,” he said. “In that sense, the humor could be enjoyed by a broader group.”

1What does the passage mainly discuss?

A. An argument about the gender of Garfield.

B. The interview between Jim Davis and Virgil Texas.

C. An update of Wikipedia entry edits about Garfield.

D. The popularity of the famous cartoon character Garfield.

2What does the underlined phrase “weigh in on” probably mean?

A. Agree with. B. Join in.

C. Put forward. D. Care about.

3The debate online upon the gender of Garfield was ended up by ______.

A. writer Virgil Texas B. Wikipedia

C. Washington Post D. creator Jim Davis

4What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A. Jim Davis’ 2014 quotes had been cut out.

B. Garfield becomes more famous than before.

C. Washington Post shut everything down in one line about Garfield.

D. The creation of Garfield is aimed at entertainment rather than anything else.

【题目】Young people in the United States do not have a strong understanding of the world and their place in it.

Two US-based groups, the Council on Foreign Relations and the National Geographic Society, conducted an online survey last year. They wanted to know what young people in American colleges knew about geography, U.S. foreign policy, recent international events, and economics.

The survey was given to over 1,200 Americans between the ages of 18 and 26 years. All of them presently attending, or having previously graduated from, a 2- or 4-year college or university.

The average test score, out of 75 total possible answers, was 55 percent. The study identifies a few important problems. For example, only 30 percent knew that the only part of the U.S. government that can declare war is Congress. Only 60% of those taking the survey could identify Brazil on a world map.

Part of the problem, argue the organizers of the survey, is the Internet. They say it is becoming harder to find high-quality information about world events amongst all the fake news and trivia which swamp the web. Forty-three percent of those questioned said they read about the news on Facebook.

Another problem is that most college courses do not require students to learn about international issues. If such information is not required, Richard Haass from the Council on Foreign Relations said, then the United States could have leaders like Gary Johnson. He was a recent presidential candidate who did not know about the Syrian city of Aleppo when a reporter asked him about it.

The survey results were not all bad. The young people also demonstrated a good understanding of climate change and renewable energy. And the majority of them said that international issues were becoming more important to them.

Haass says these findings suggest the need to find ways to get good information to students, both in school and online. To help, the Council on Foreign Relations is creating a new program called CFR Campus, designed to help build knowledge about global issues.

1What do we know about the survey?

A. The participants were all recent university graduates.

B. It was an online survey conducted by two US universities.

C. It was given to over 1,200 American people aged from 18 to 26.

D. It aimed to find out what the young people know about America.

2What’s one reason survey organizers give for young people’s lack of knowledge?

A. The poor quality of the US university system.

B. Young people’s unwillingness to travel abroad.

C. The sources from which they get their information.

D. Their lack of interest in knowing more about the world.

3What topic did the young Americans understand best according to the survey?

A. Government organizations. B. Geographic information.

C. Foreign relations. D. Environmental matters.

4In which column of a newspaper could we find this article?

A. Economics. B. Education.

C. National Politics. D. Entertainment.

Dear Mandy,
I'm not doing well in my lessons at school, especial in maths. My dad says I must try hard because he wants me go to university. He thinks I'm lazy, but it's not true. I work really hard, often study late into the night! I've tried to talk to my mother, but she always said I have to work as hard like my brother does. My brother doesn't study very hard, and he always gets excellent grades. It's not fair! The only thing I like it is art. My teacher says I'm the best student she's had for year. When I told my dad,all he said was,“ You mustn 't waste your time in art. You must focus your mind on your lessons! ”I'm feeling quite puzzling as to what to do now. Would you please help me out?
Thanks a lot!
Yours sincerely,
Lisa

【题目】根据短文理解,选择正确答案。
When I was a child, I had to go to church and obey many other rules, though these rules at times caused resentment (怨恨). Perhaps the most extreme parenting decision my parents made for my four brothers and sisters and me was to create a home environment without a television.
We hated this decision at that time, because there was seemingly no way to keep this embarrassing fact a secret at school. Naturally, simple pleasures like cartoons, football games, and movies became huge novelties (新奇事物). I would go over to friends' or relatives' houses for that access alone.
When I reached high school, my parents bought a television, though it had no cable. However, I did spend most of my childhood in a home without a television. In fact not having a television did contribute a great deal to my skills, and it also forced me to develop other valuable interests. We grew up in a small town, so my brothers and sisters and I spent time exploring streets, fields and woods. And of course I read and wrote and studied, which pushed me toward a career path.
So would I give a similar situation to my own children if I had them? I doubt it, at least not in the most extreme sense. I'm too much of a football fan, not to mention the TV serials (连续剧) like The Wire. But television or almost anything for that matter is unhealthy for kids. It can prevent them from living a full life. So maybe a reasonable answer is no cable or no video-game systems or simply setting the time limit, but I haven't exactly worked out how to confine it yet. Although some people are against my idea, we do need limits after all.
(1)From the text we can learn that ________.
A.the author didn't like watching TV as a child
B.the author's family seldom went to church
C.not having a TV set brought the author many benefits
D.few homes had a TV set when the author was a child
(2)From the last paragraph we can learn the author thinks that ________.
A.children shouldn't watch TV too much
B.children should be forbidden to watch TV
C.children should only watch serials and sports on TV
D.watching TV is unhealthy for both adults and children
(3)Which of the following can replace the underlined word “confine” in the last paragraph?
A.Limit.
B.Punish.
C.Reject.
D.Support.

【题目】根据短文理解,选择正确答案。
Imagination Stage is a children's theater in the state of Maryland. A special performance is put on for children with autism (自闭症) each day. People with autism have difficulty communcating and socializing with other people. Children in the theater are allowed to move around during the performance. It's OK if they shout out or hold their ears when the music is too loud. These special performances are sometimes the only thing that a family can go to the theater together to see if a child has autism.
That is the same idea with Autism on the Seas. This company organizes vacations for families of children with autism, especially vacations on cruise ships. Jamie Grover is director of group development in Autism on the Seas. He said, “With our staff on board, parents know that they are going to be able to relax, enjoy their vacation, and participate in ship activities. They know that their children are well taken care of.”
The benefit of such vacations organized by Autism on the Seas is not waiting in huge lines on departure day. The company has staff to help in the ports. Waiting in long lines or being in the middle of big crowds can cause problem behavior in children with autism. Autism on the Seas helps families avoid situations like that.
Autism on the Seas works with the help of cruise companies like Royal Caribbean. Special times or places are arranged for families to play video games, go skating or rock climbing, or eat dinner. Autism on the Seas also directs families to organizations that can help them pay for these vacations.
Bambi Van Woert from the state of Michigan went on a cruise with her 7-year-old Ben, who has autism. She said, “I would never do something like this myself. I cannot take Ben shopping by myself at this point, so for me to try to do a cruise without help would be absurd.”
(1)What makes the children's theatre Imagination Stage special?
A.That it only allows children with autism to enter.
B.That it puts on plays performed by people with autism.
C.That it mainly puts on plays about people with autism.
D.That it puts on special performances for kids with autism.
(2)What do we know about the company Autism on the Seas?
A.It helps families of children with autism pay for vacations.
B.It was started with the help of the cruise company Royal Caribbean.
C.It organizes vacations for families of children with autism.
D.It takes care of kids with autism while their parents are away.
(3)The third paragraph mainly tells us ________.
A.some occasions that kids with autism should avoid
B.some behavioural problems of children with autism
C.some activities children with autism can take part in
D.the benefit of vacations organized by Autism on the Seas
(4)Bambi Van Woert is mentioned in the last paragraph to show that ________.
A.parents of a child with autism don't want such trips
B.parents of a child with autism live a very difficult life
C.children with autism don't like doing anything with their parents
D.such cruise trips can really help families of children with autism
