    20．Meeting people from another culture can be difficult．From the beginning，people may send the wrong signal．Or they may pay no attention to signals from another person who is trying to develop a relationship．
    Different cultures emphasize （强调） the importance of relationship building to a greater or lesser degree．For example，business in some countries is not possible until there is a relationship of trust．Even with people at work，it is necessary to spend a lot of time in"small talk"，usually over a glass of tea，before they do any job．In many European countries-like the UK or France-people find it easier to build up a lasting working relationship at restaurants or cafes rather than at the office．
    Talk and silence may also be different in some cultures．I once made a speech in Thailand．I had expected my speech to be a success and start a lively discussion； instead there was an uncomfortable silence．The people present just stared at me and smiled．After getting to know their ways better，I realized that they thought I was talking too much．In my own culture，we express meaning mainly through words，but people there sometimes feel too many words are unnecessary．
    Even within Northern Europe，cultural differences can cause serious problems．Certainly，English and German cultures share similar values； however，Germans prefer to get down to business more quickly．We think that they are rude．In fact，this is just because one culture starts discussions and makes decisions more quickly．
    People from different parts of the world have different values，and sometimes these values are quite against each other．However，if we can understand them better，a multicultural （多元文化） environment will offer a wonderful chance for us to learn from each other．

    Last year a crowd of bargain-hunters killed a Wal-mart worker in a New York suburb．This year，many stores are increasing security while they slash prices．"This is a huge time for the retail stores，"said Fred Joutz from George Washington University．"This is when they begin making their profits for the year．"
    Economics professor Fred Joutz says how Americans spend the weekend after Thanksgiving is a good indication of how consumers feel about the future．
    With the unemployment rate above 10 percent，Joutz says Americans are saving more and spending less．Some retailers are attracting consumers by opening on Thanksgiving Day，when shops are traditionally closed．Other stores open their doors anywhere from midnight to four in the morning．
    And shoppers will be lining up in front of the doors in order to be one of the first ones to walk through and get a big discount．Electronics like flat screen TVs are usually the first items to go．Sandy Thomas says it's an annual family tradition and well worth it．"I just save maybe half of what I would have spent on a regular，you know，shopping trip，"she said．

    11．The UK government is considering removing"Best Before"dates on food packaging in the country，in order to prevent throwing away of million tons of eatable produce worth£6bn each year．
    According to the Waste and Resources Action Program，British families throw away 8.3million tons of food and drink a year，while most of it ends up in garbage sites．It is reported that more than 5million tons of the thrown-away food still remains eatable．
    "Best Before"（BB） is not the same as"Use By"（UB）．BB is about quality not safety．UB is the key date in terms of safety．"Best Before"indicates the date before which a product provides the most satisfying experience for the consumer．It's safe to eat，but it just won't be at their best．By contrast，"UB"dates show when food is no longer safe and should be thrown away．One exception is eggs，which should not be eaten after their"BB"dates because they can contain salmonella bacteria，which could multiply．By law，pre-packed food must show a"BB"date．
    The government will set down new policies that will provide better information for shoppers and stop them from throwing away food before it is even opened．Under the new policies，sellers will have to produce labels （标签） that will give accurate information of the health risks associated with foods that remain on shelves，or in the fridge for a certain period before being eaten．Seafood and eggs，for example，would be more likely to carry warnings of potential risks of food poisoning if they were eaten after a certain date．Bread，however，where risks would be smallest，would carry much simpler labels．

    I would surely still go to college if I had that much money，but I would not be competing for a scholarship on collegenet．com．I would probably still discuss things here and I would create other scholarships to help other people to go to college as well．
    With﹩50million，I would not have to worry about getting a loan（贷款）from Chase Bank or finding scholarships to study abroad．I would have published several books by now as well，but I would still pursue my education．Going to undergraduate school is something that I really want to do because I want to become a Pediatrician．Money may buy a lot of things，but it does not necessarily give you knowledge and knowledge is what I am hunting for now．
    I am not just going to school to get a better job； I am going to school to realize all of my dreams．﹩50million is a lot of money，but no amount of money can keep me from my dreams．

    I would still go to college．The only difference is with that much money to go to college I probably would stay in college longer and pursue a few extra degrees while I am there．I am looking for knowledge not money．The only problem is I need money to pursue knowledge．
