In a world where comparisons happen non-stop, it is difficult to look outside yourself and to ever be ________ with who you are. There's always someone who's a bit ________. The only solution is to reach ________ and measure against what Warren Buffett calls your own inner yardstick. There is no more ________ measure for comparison than who you were yesterday, last week or last decade, when you were at your ________.

Nothing useful ever comes from comparison to others. ________ you see yourself as better than someone and you get ________, or you see someone else as better than you and you feel like all your hard work is for ________. It is a fool's game. Not one of us is ________ alike. The only direct and honest comparison is ________ yourself. Everything else is apples to oranges.

My opinion is that you are only ________ to compare yourself to someone else if their life ________ is the same as your own. Good luck finding that match. And one thing is for sure. No matter how hard you work and how ________ you are, there will always be someone who can run a little faster, jump a little higher, score a little better or look a little nicer in a swimsuit. And if there's not, you can ________ someone is coming up fast behind you. So how can you always win in life? Become your best ________.

Having an image of your most recent past limits is the perfect thing to ________ you to the next level. If you ran 7 flights of stairs yesterday, then do 8 today. Who ________ if the guy next to you did 15? It doesn't make a bit of ________. You are a more fit person today than you were yesterday. Your own ________ is all you need.

If you ________ to a slightly higher standard of yourself every day, you will always be at the top of your game.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

One of the common complaints we hear from the people around us are problems they are facing. Every day and everywhere there are problems. Many times we find it hard to stay happy. When one problem is solved, another one comes up. How to solve them? The answer is that we must equip ourselves to deal with different kinds of worries by learning the three basic steps of problem analysis. The three steps are:

Get the facts

Why is it so important to get the facts? Unless you have the facts, you can’t possibly attempt to solve your problem intelligently. Without the facts, all you can do is wondering around in confusion. It is not an easy job to get facts. When you are worried, your emotions are riding high. 1.

When trying to get the facts, you can pretend that you are collecting this information not for yourself but for some other person. 2. You can also pretend that you are a lawyer preparing to agree. Try to get all the facts both on your side and the other side of the case. You will generally find the truth lies somewhere in between.

3.

Whenever you are worried, write down the questions that make you worry. And write out all the various steps you could take and then the probable consequences of each step. For example, what am I worrying about? What can I do about it? Here is what I’m going to do about it. After carefully weighing all the facts, you can calmly come to a decision.

Act on that decision.

4. How can you break the worry habit before it breaks you? Crowd worry out of your mind by keeping busy. Plenty of action is one of the best ways to cure worry.

5. If you know a situation is beyond your power, say to yourself: “It is so; it can’t be otherwise.” Don’t permit little things to ruin your happiness. Try to cultivate a mental attitude that will bring you peace and happiness.

A. Analyze the facts.

B. Accept what can’t be avoided.

C. Decide how much anxiety a thing may be worth.

D. This will help you to take a cold and fair view of the evidence.

E. There comes a time when you must decide and never look back.

F. But here are two ideas that can help you see the facts in a clear and objective way.

G. Unless you take your action, all your fact-finding and analysis is a sheer waste of energy.

It was one of the hottest days of the dry season. We had not seen rain in almost a month. The crops were dying. Cows had stopped giving milk. The streams were long gone back into the earth. If we didn't see some rain soon we would lose everything.

I was in the kitchen making lunch for my husband and his brothers when I saw my six-year old son, Billy, walking toward the woods. He was obviously walking with a great effort... trying to be as still as possible. Minutes after he disappeared into the woods, he came running out again, toward the house.

Moments later, however, he was once again walking in that slow purposeful long step toward the woods. This activity went on for over an hour: walking cautiously to the woods, then running back to the house. Finally, my curiosity got the best of me. I crept out of the house and followed him on his journey.

He was cupping both hands in front of him as he walked; being very careful not to spill the water he held in them. Branches and thorns slapped his little face but he did not try to avoid them. He had a much greater purpose. As I leaned in to spy on him, I saw the most amazing site.

Several large deer appeared threatening in front of him. But Billy walked right up to them. I almost screamed for him to get away. And I saw a baby deer lying on the ground, obviously suffering from heavy loss of water and heat exhaustion, lift its head with great effort to lap up the water cupped in my beautiful boy's hand.

I stood on the edge of the woods watching the most beautiful heart I have ever known working so hard to save a life. As the tears that rolled down my face began to hit the ground, they were suddenly joined by other drops... and more drops... and more. I looked up at the sky. It was as if God, Himself, was weeping with pride.

The Greatest Navigational Journey

In 1787 Captain Bligh was given command of “The Bounty”, a three-year-old merchant ship. His mission was to transport breadfruit plants from the island of Tahiti to the West Indies. We know the popular story of this voyage and the rebellion, in which Bligh has been presented as hard, violent and thoroughly unpleasant captain. However, there is quite a lot of evidence to suggest that this picture is far from being true. He seems to have been unusually thoughtful about the health and welfare of his men. For example he made sure that his crew got exercise, insisted on cleanliness on his ship, and adopted the practice of giving them a drink which prevented scurvy every day.

When Captain Bligh arrived in Tahiti, it became clear that it would be some months before the breadfruit trees were ready to be taken to the West Indies. Instead of going off right away, he gave his crew extended shore leave. This may have been a mistake as many were unhappy about leaving when the time came. Finally, on the return journey the rebellion took place. The ship was under the command of the rebels and Captain Bligh had to leave in a small boat.

Captain Bligh’s achievement was to get to dry land successfully. It is one of the supreme examples of seamanship. Apart from Bligh there were 18 members of his crew sailing in an open boat about 23 feet long and 7 feet wide. They took with them 25 gallons of water, 150 pounds of bread and 30 pounds of pork. They had no guns or other weapons. The boat was so low in the water that it seemed likely to sink at any time. On one occasion Captain Bligh tried to land on an island to get more water. He and his men were attacked by hostile natives and one of the crew was killed. At this point Bligh decided to sail directly to the Dutch settlement on the island of Timor without stopping. The distance was about 4,000 miles. The voyage took about 42 days and he had no advanced navigational equipment. However, his skill and commitment proved equal to the task and amazingly no one else died. It was truly a remarkable achievement.

1.What is the popularly held view of Captain Bligh according to Paragraph 1?

A. He was skillful.B. He was thoughtful.

C. He was determined.D. He was unpleasant.

2.It may have been a mistake that Bligh gave his crew extended shore leave because it caused ________.

A. the lack of drink

B. the death of the tress

C. the unhappiness about leaving

D. the challenges facing the small boat

3.What problem did Bligh and his 18 men face after the rebellion?

A. The threat from the rebels.B. Conflicts with local people.

C. Attacks from marine animals.D. The possible sinking of the boat.

4.What made Bligh’s 4000-mile voyage successful?

A. The rebels’ abuse.

B. His great seamanship.

C. The crew’s decision.

D. Modern navigational equipment.

Different kinds of soil conservation methods are used by farmers to protect their land from damage by farming and the forces of nature. One important form of soil conservation is the use of windbreaks.

Windbreaks are barriers (屏障) formed by trees and other plants with many leaves. Farmers plant them in lines around their fields. Windbreaks stop the wind from blowing soil away. They also keep the wind from destroying or damaging crops. They are very important for growing grains, such as wheat.

There have been studies done on windbreaks in parts of West Africa, for example. They found that grain harvests can be twenty percent higher in fields protected by windbreaks compared to fields without such protection.

However, windbreaks seem to work best when they allow a little wind to pass through. If the wall of trees and plants stops wind completely, then violent air motions will take place close to the ground. These motions will lift soil into the air where it will be blown away. For this reason, a windbreak is best if it has only sixty to eighty percent of the trees and plants needed to make a solid line.

There should be at least two lines in each windbreak. One line should be large trees. The second line, right next to it, can be shorter trees and other plants with leaves. Locally grown trees and plants are best for windbreaks.

1.What is a windbreak according to the passage?

A. A windbreak is a concrete wall to prevent the strong winds.

B. A windbreak is a wood with different kinds of trees.

C. A windbreak is a wall of trees to hold soil in place.

D. A windbreak is a wall of wind to fight wind from the opposite way.

2.When can windbreaks be most effective?

A. The trees are planted one by one.

B. The trees and plants grow in a line.

C. The trees grow as high as they can.

D. Windbreaks allow a little wind to blow through.

3.Which of the following statements is NOT true?

A. A windbreak is one of the best forms of soil conversation.

B. A windbreak is very good for growing grains such as wheat.

C. One line of trees is enough for soil protection.

D. Locally grown trees and plants are the top choice for a windbreak.

Now scientists believe that global warming affects hibernating(冬眠的) animals, causing them to wake up earlier. While this may seem a little concern, it is in fact a significant environmental problem. The shortened hibernation (冬眠) period could actually lead to significant declines in the populations of several species.

Some of the first concrete evidence of the phenomenon came from Colorado, where researchers at the Rocky Mountain Biological lab have been observing marmot(旱獭) hibernation behavior since the 1970s. In the early days of their studies, marmots generally hibernated several weeks into the month of May. Nowadays, however, temperatures in the area have risen by 2.5 degrees Fahrenheit(华氏度), and the marmots are waking up about a month earlier.

At least the marmots are still hibernating. Several other animals have not been hibernating at all recently. Brown bears in the Spanish Cantabrian Mountains did not hibernate last year. In parts of the United States, chipmunks (花鼠) also skipped the hibernation period. The bears seem to have survived without losing many individuals. The chipmunks, however, were not so lucky. Many of the animals died of starvation during the winter.

The problem with animals waking up early, or skipping hibernation altogether, lies with the creatures’ metabolism(新陈代谢). When an animal hibernates, their metabolism drops significantly. The animals’ heart rate slows, and they require very little energy to live. When the animals awake from their winter slumber, their metabolism returns to normal.

But while their metabolism may be as active as it was before hibernation, food sources aren’t as available as they were before. A marmot may wake up when temperatures get warmer, thinking it’s spring, but plants will not have gotten the amount of sun they need to signal their spring period of growth. So until the plants grow, the marmots have no reliable food source.

Many scientists believe the problem will continue to get worse. In addition to changes in hibernation patterns, some believe that other animals will also begin to change their migration patterns or begin to give birth earlier. For many biologists, that’s a scary prospect. Terry Root, an animal expert at Stanford University, said: “I do think what we will be facing is the extinction of many species."

1.What is the viewpoint of the writer?

A. Global warming will continue to get worse as time goes on.

B. Global warming will lead to shortened hibernation of some animals.

C. Shortened hibernation will result in declines in the population of animals.

D. Some animals will skip hibernation altogether.

2.The writer sets the example of the marmot so as to ________.

A. explain that global warming influences animals’ hibernation

B. indicate that the weather gets warmer and warmer now

C. show that the weather in the United States is quite different

D. say some animals do not hibernate now due to warm weather

3.Why can’t marmots find enough food when they wake up?

A. Because there are too many marmots in the wild now.

B. Because plants haven’t received enough sunlight for spring growth.

C. Because winter days end much earlier than before.

D. Because more and more animal species skip hibernation now.

4.Terry Root holds a(n) ________ attitude towards the future of animals.

A. optimisticB. doubtfulC. pessimisticD. sensitive
