A study involving8,500 teenagers from all social backgrounds found that most of them are ignorant when it comes to money. The findings, the first in a series of reports from NatWest that has started a fiveyear research project into teenagers and money, are particularly worrying as this generation of young people is likely to be burdened with greater debts than any before.

University tuition fees (学费) are currently capped at £3,000 annually, but this will be reviewed next year and the government is under enormous pressure to raise the ceiling.

In the research, the teenagers were presented with the terms of four different loans but 76 per cent failed to identify the cheapest. The young people also predicted that they would be earning on average£31,000 by the age of 25,although the average salary for those aged 22 to29 is just£ 17,815. The teenagers were expected to be in debt when they finished university or training, although half said that they assumed the debts would be less than £l0,000. Average debts for graduates are£ 12,363.

Stephen Moir, head of community investment at the Royal Bank of Scotland Group which owns NatWest, said, "The more exposed young people are to financial is?sues, and the younger they become aware of them, the more likely they are to become responsible, forwardplan?ning adults who manage their finances confidently and ef?fectively."

Ministers are deeply concerned about the financial pressures on teenagers and young people because of student loans and rising housing costs.   Mona Lisa, the mysterious woman in Leonardo da Vinci's 16       th century masterpiece, had just given birth to her second son when she sat for the paint?ing,a French art expert said on Tuesday. The discovery was made by a team of Canadian scientists who used special infrared (红夕卜线的) and threedimen?sional (三维的) technology to study the paint layers on the work, which now sits in the Louvre Museum in Paris.

Bruno Mottin of the French Museums' Centre for Research and Restora?tion said that on very close examination of the painting it became clear that Mona Lisa's dress was covered in a thin transparent gauze veil (透明面纱) .

"This type of gauze dress was typical of the kind worn in early 16th cen?tury in Italy by women who were pregnant or who had just given birth. This is something that had never been seen up to now because the painting was always judged to be dark and difficult to examine," he told a news conference.

"We can now say that this painting by Leonardo da Vinci was painted in memory of the birth of the second son of Mona Lisa, which helps us to date it more precisely to around 1503. " The young woman with the ambiguous half smile has been identified as Lisa Gherardini, wife of Florentine merchant Francesco del Giocondo. She had five children.

"People always wrote that Mona Lisa had allowed her hair to hang freely over her shoulders. This greatly surprised historians because letting your hair hang freely during the Renaissance was typical of young girls and women of poor virtue (美德) ”,he said.

The team had hoped to discover more details about Leonardo's painting tech?niques, which the artist used to create a hazy (朦胧的) effect. But scientist John Taylor said the team had been disappointed by the lack of brush stroke detail on the painting.
