Nodira, 18, lives in the Tashkent region of Uzbekistan. She was born with a rare disease and is now paralyzed(瘫痪)from the waist down. Her life is confined to a wheelchair but her dreams know no such boundaries. Her hopes for the future include attending university, riding in her father's car and being able to walk like other children.

Nodira, which means ‘unique' in Uzbek, is one of five children in a poor family.Every morning, after reciting her prayers, Nodira feeds the hens and goats from her wheelchair. The rest of her day is spent knitting for other people and helping her mother with the household chores.

Nodira has never been to school because it is too far from her home and inaccessible for her wheelchair.A local teacher used to come and tutor her at home and, as a result, she was able to finish third grade. After that, her parents moved to another town and the tutor could not visit as much.

Despite the many difficulties in Nodira's life she is lucky to be living with her family. The stigma(羞辱)attached to the children living with disabilities, combined with the lack of wheelchair access in schools and the economic difficulties faced by many Uzbek families, have led many parents to place children with disabilities in special institutions.

These days, Nodira does homework exercises at home and reads as much as she can.Still, it is unlikely that she will be able to finish her primary education, much less attend university. While missing out on an education is a great disappointment to Nodira, her greatest wish, for a true friend, can still come true.“What I want more than anything is a friend who also has a disability,”she says.“Somebody will not feel sorry for me or make fun of me, and will understand what my life is like.”

Mianzi(literally “face”)has long been observed by most Chinese. As a famous saying goes, “Men live for face as trees grow for bark.”

In a recent survey conducted by China Youth Daily, over 93 percent of the polled(接受测试的)people(1150)said they pay much attention to their mianzi, which concerns people’s decency, personality, and dignity.

When asked what the most humiliating(不光彩的)thing is, a heavy number accounting for 74.9 percent of the total chose public gaffes(失态)with the failed fulfillment of one’s promise coming in as second.More than a half of the people feel ashamed of being shown as ignorant before others.A total 47.5 percent of the polled considered it a loss of face to have no enough money on them when treating friends out to a dinner.

What would enhance one’s face then? In a ranking on this question, the survey revealed that doing what others cannot do topped the list, taking up a high proportion of 83.7 percent.Following at the second, with 53.9 percent, was being praised in public.Being outstandingly knowledgeable was third on the list for sharpening one’s mianzi, accounting for 51.7 percent.

According to the survey, face usually comes at a price. To pay or not to pay, it’s a problem.Deeply troubled with the face concept, many “fight” each other for the chance to foot the bill despite a barren pocket. Some 80.7 percent of those taking the poll thought it a tough life to always hold the face concept.Surprisingly, only 8.7 percent of the polled insisted that it tarnish(损害)a man’s authority and face in a family where the wife is the major breadwinner.

Armed to the teeth with the luxury name brand clothes, a limited 7.7 percent among all the polled prefer pricey cloths in order to gain more face.

Taking the social status into consideration, 82.9 percent of the polled nod at the opinion that those holding a superior position care far more than the general public about face.In another comparison, the manual labors pay less attention to face than brainworkers. The survey also revealed that men focus more on face than women and the senior more than the young.

While most people hold a neutral viewpoint about those who value mianzi a lot, nearly 80 percent of all the polled are willing to make friends with them.

(1)

According to the survey, which of the following most enhances one’s face?

[ ]

Jan 6, 2006-Randal McCloy JR., the sole survivor of the Sago Mine tragedy, has emerged from a coma(昏迷)but remains unconscious at Pittsburgh's Allegheny Hospital. He's in a critical but stable condition.

McCloy has responded to his wife's voice, even squeezing her hand. But doctors fear he may have suffered brain damage from carbon monoxide(一氧化碳)poisoning even though his initial tests did not reveal the presence of the lethal gas.

Since yesterday, he has been receiving hyperbaric oxygen treatments, which flood the body with 20 times the normal amount of oxygen. The hope is that it will flush the carbon monoxide from his brain and help his other damaged organs.

But his doctors admit it's a long shot.A recent study found little evidence that the treatments helped the brain to heal. And doctors warn that any improvement will take days or weeks.

His wife, Anna McCloy, and his mother, Tambra Flint, both said they saw him respond to their presence. They said M c Cloy would give them a knowing wink when he understood what they said and he also tried to nod his head to show his agreement.

“I know he knows when I'm there because when I'm there he gets excited and he lifts his eyelids to try to look at me,” Anna said.

“When we discuss things with him like going fishing and hunting, he gets excited too,” Flint said.

Anna said she also saw a response when she brought their children into the room.

There have been many theories as to how McCloy survived when the other 12 men did not. Some people say it's because McCloy, 26, was the youngest.Others-including his mother-speculate that other miners gave him their oxygen masks.

How do you feel after you've stayed up late to finish schoolwork? Or the day after a slumber party? Scientists now say that your answers to these questions may depend on your genes.

Genes are stretches of DNA that work like an instruction manual for our cells.Genes tell our bodies and brains what to do.People have about 40,000 genes, and each gene can have different forms. So, for example, certain forms of some genes make your eyes blue.Other versions of those genes make your eyes brown.

In a similar way, new research suggests that a gene called period3 affects how well you function without sleep. The discovery adds to older evidence that period3 helps determine whether you like to stay up late or get up early.

The period3 gene comes in two forms:short and long.Everyone has two copies of the gene. So, you may have two longs, two shorts, or one of each.Your particular combination depends on what your parents passed on to you.

Scientists from the University of Surrey in England studied 24 people who had either two short or two long copies of period3.Study participants had to stay awake for 40 hours straight. Then, they took tests that measured how quickly they pushed a button when numbers flashed on a screen and how well they could remember lists of numbers.

Results showed that the people with the short form of period3 performed much better on these tests than the people with the long form did.In both groups, people performed worst in the early morning. That's the time when truck drivers and other night-shift workers say they have the most trouble concentrating.

After the first round of experiments, participants were finally allowed to sleep.People in the group that performed well on the tests took about 18 minutes to nod off.

People with the long period3 gene, by contrast, fell asleep in just 8 minutes. They also spent more time in deep sleep. That suggests that people with the long form of the gene need more and deeper sleep to keep their brains working at top form.

(1)

We can know from the passage that genes can not ________.

[ ]

A.

tell our bodies and brains what to do

B.

make our eyes blue or brown

C.

decide how well you work without sleep

D.

ensure whether you're good at driving

(2)

Which of the following statements about the period3 is wrong?

[ ]

A.

It affects whether you like to stay up late or get up early.

B.

It comes in two forms:short and long.

C.

One has either two longs or two shorts of it.

D.

Your parents determine what particular combination you have.

(3)

People with the short form of period3 ________.

[ ]

A.

need to go to bed early and get up early

B.

can work better than the people with long form of period3 without sleep

C.

take less time to fall asleep after they stay up late

D.

need more and deeper sleep to keep their brains working at top form

(4)

What's the best title of the passage?

[ ]

A.

The Period3 Gene

B.

The Function of Genes

C.

Wake up, Sleepy Gene

D.

Stay up Late or Get up Early?
