For a long time being happy was considered something that just happened, and there was nothing special about it. Now we know that getting along with other people is something that we can work at. It is possible to act in such a way that other people will like us better. One way is being unselfish, not wanting everything from our friends. Another way is to look for good points, not bad ones in other people. It is surprising how successful this treasure hunt can be.

You don’t have to be spineless(没有骨气的) in order to be popular. In fact, you will be liked and respected if you are not afraid to stand up for your rights. But do it politely and pleasantly. Being friendly and polite to your group, to other people and to strangers and especially to those who do not look important or do not interest you is one way to develop a good character.

You can not expect to be perfect, and you must learn not to be unhappy when you make mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes, and no one is to be blamed unless he refuses to learn from them. Many young people become discouraged when they know in themselves qualities that they do not like—selfishness, laziness, and other unpleasant qualities. Just remember that we all have some of these faults and have to fight against them.

At the same time, it is important to remember that, while you are probably no worse than others, the best way to be happy is to think yourself above other people. When something is wrong, it is good sense to try to make it right. Perhaps you don’t like a teacher or a classmate. Try to see why and look at yourself, too, to be sure that you are not doing anything to make that person dislike you. Some day, things may turn out all right and then you will have to learn to get along the best with situation, without thinking too much about it. Worrying never helps in a situation you can’t change.

When my friend went to Europe last summer, instead of snapping photographs of the Louvre or the Eiffel Tower or Stonehenge, she brought back 32 rolls of ... Cathedral(大教堂的) ceilings. Ceilings. For the 10 years I’ve known her I had never suspected that she was this passionate about stained glass.

Still one of the best things about such pictures — despite their obvious narrow appeal — is that they can’t help but tell us a great deal about the people who took them.

So I shouldn’t have been surprised when I got the roll of film back from my 5-year-old son’s first camping trip. I opened the envelope, naively expecting to see pictures of the nightly campfire, the sun setting over the forest, and possibly even a deer or two.

Instead, I saw an off-center picture of tennis shoes. Not even his tennis shoes, mind you, but a pair someone had lost and left in the cabin. Mystery shoes. And that’s not all.

As I went through the stack, I found that my son had also taken a picture of his sleeping bag, a penny he found in the gravel next to the car, a leaf, an orange sock, a close-up of his father’s ear, a burned hot dog, his thumb, a piece of gum, and many other similar things.

There was barely one sign of nature in the whole stack. I couldn’t help thinking that if he’d wanted pictures of assorted junk, it would’ve been cheaper had he spent the weekend in our back-yard.

AT LEAST that is what I thought until I showed the photographs to my ceiling-snapping friend, the mother of three teenagers, who said simply, “There’s nothing wrong with these.”

But of course, this is just the type of answer you’d expect from someone who photographs ceiling.

Then she told me about the time her daughter went to Yosemite Valley and returned with rolls of photographs of the hotel, restaurant, and gift shop. She also told me about the time her son took his camera to a Major League Baseball game and returned with 24 pictures of cloud formations.

I had a feeling she was just trying to make me feel better.

Then again, to a 5-year-old boy, finding a penny is more exciting than seeing a squirrel. And why would he waste good film on something like, say, some endangered water buffaloes, when he could take a picture of cool tennis shoes? Or his shiny new green sleeping bag?

Face it: Things like beautiful sunsets and campfires can’t compare to a bag of extra-large marshmallow.

So I did what any good mother would do: I marked the date on the back of the pictures and slid them into our family vacation photo album — right after the five pages of ice sculptures I took last year on our cruise to the Bahamas.

1.Who might have taken a picture of the back seat of the family car in his or her trip mentioned in this passage?

A. The author’s friend.

B. The author’s son.

C. The author.

D. The author’s friend’s daughter.

2.The author changed her mind on her son’s picture taking because______ .

A. her friend persuaded her to do so

B. her son’s pictures finally struck her

C. she realized the truth by herself inspired by the surrounding examples

D. it suddenly occurred to her that she herself had also taken unique pictures before

3.What can we infer from this passage?

A. Different people perceive the world from different angles, which may vary according to their age, gender, life experiences and so on.

B. The author’s friend is a better mum in terms of educating children.

C. The author will educate her son to take pictures of nature instead of some boring things.

D. The author will take vacation pictures of different kind from her past ones.

Too much eating. Too many unhealthy foods. Too many ads for food. Too few activities. Different reasons are given for America’s weight problem---a problem increasingly shared by other countries. Almost one-fifth of American children and teenagers are overweight.

Schools have been asked to increase physical education, an important tool for public health. However, a recent study has shown an increase in the number of injuries in P.E. classes.

Researchers say one possible reason for this is a decrease in the number of school nurses. Schools without a nurse on duty may be more likely to send an injured child to a hospital.

Another possible reason for more injuries is a change in the traditional idea of physical education. This “New P.E.” expands the kinds of sports that are taught. But activities that some schools offer now, like rock climbing and skateboarding, can also increase the risks, says Cheryl Richardson, who is with the National Association for Sport and Physical Education(NASPE).

She also says not all states require P.E. teachers to be specially trained. Untrained teachers could be less likely to recognize unsafe conditions.

Cheryl Richardson points to one of the study’s findings –that injuries are often the result of contact with a person or a structure. This tells her that the teachers were not giving each student enough space to move around safely.

Six activities produced seventy percent of all injuries: running, basketball, football, volleyball, rugby and gymnastics.

The researchers say larger class sizes are another possible reason for the increase in injuries. Larger classes can mean less supervision(监督). The National Association for Sport and Physical Education says twenty to thirty students in a P.E. class should be the limit.

1.What does the passage mainly discuss?

A. What leads to the weight problem in America.

B. Whether students should have more P.E. classes.

C. Why there have been more injuries in P.E. classes.

D. What kinds of activities are safe for school students.

2.We can know from the third paragraph that__________.

A. nurses are paid more in hospitals than in schools in America.

B. many nurses in American schools don’t have good skills.

C. fewer people choose to become a nurse in America.

D. American schools need more school nurses at present.

3.Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A. P.E. classes become more dangerous for students now in America.

B. Fewer and fewer students are interested in P.E. classes in America.

C. The number of P.E. teachers in schools must be increased now.

D. P.E. classes follow the traditional ideas in physical education.

4.According to Cheryl Richardson,____________.

A. students should do more exercise when they are at school

B. teachers are partly responsible for injuries in P.E. classes

C. the equipment for P.E. classes must be improved in all schools.

D. P.E. teachers should give students more freedom in their classes
