We live a life surrounded by robots. Nearly every robot has been made in some way1 up to a certain level or temperature. The machine will wait for “feedback” about the water2or temperature before it begins the washing cycle. In this way, a washing machine has been patterned after humans. We depend on 3from our five senses to find out what is happening around us and then make decisions about our actions.
Of course, some machines perform functions like humans, but much 4 than we do, such as calculators. A pocket calculator works faster than a human, never makes mistakes, and doesn’t get 5or bored.
Other robots are very similar to humans in their ability6 new things. In factories, robots can learn to do many different tasks, as they are shown by a human operator. For example, in a car factory, a person will guide a robot’s “arm” and “ 7” through the steps of the new job. The robot’s electronic “brain” will 8the information away, memorizing the steps so the next time it9can repeat the movements without a human operator. When the robot must be moved to a new job, its memory is 10so it is ready to learn the next job. Of course, at any time if there is anything 11in the process, different from the original task, the robot cannot 12 with it. It will signal for an engineer to come for repairs.
Some robots are considered very intelligent because they have more human abilities than others, such as “seeing” 13 cameras for eyes or “feeling” with metal fingers that can14shapes and even temperatures. However, no machine has 15been able to copy the complexity of the simplest, most common person.

(4)根据下面一句的works faster than a human, never makes mistakes可知讲述的是robots的“优势”,排除B项和C项, 选择better修饰前面的动词perform。 (6)根据后面一句的“learn”和下文所举的例子选择“learn”,又根据ability的搭配“the ability to do sth” 故选B。 (11)“if there is anything in the process”与后面的“different from the original task”说的是同一层含义,所以强调的是与“原先设置的任务”的“不同”,故选unusual最妥当。 (12)deal with意为“处理”;而do sth with sth意为“处理”时常与what疑问句连用,如“I don’t know what to do with all the leftovers.” (13)根据后面的“or”,说明空格处与“feeling”with metal fingers并列,故选with,表示手段,意为“用”。 (14)本句与首段提到的“depend on feedback from our five senses”呼应,又根据空格前面的“seeing”和“feeling”等感官进一步证明B选项正确。

Robert Ballard is probably the most famous deep-sea explorer in the past 100 years. While he is best known for his historic discovery of the wreckage(残骸) of the R.M.S. Titanic which sank to the bottom of the sea in 1912, he also discovered the wreckage of the Bismarck and the Yorktown. Over his career, Dr. Ballard has completed over 120 deep-sea journeys and continues to push exploration to new depths with new technologies and strategies. His new high-tech Inner Space Center at the University of Rhode Island links scientists all over the world and makes it possible to identify new discoveries in realtime.

Reporter: What were you like as a kid?

Ballard: I was a very “active” kid with lots of interests including sports (football, basketball, and tennis), fishing, and studies.

That summer, I went to sea on two separate expeditions in Baja California with various oceanographers(海洋学家). During one of those expeditions, I met Dr. Robert Norris, a Scripps graduate with a Ph. D. in marine geology, who invited me to come to the University of California, Santa Barbara where I ended up getting my undergraduate degree in Geology and Chemistry with minors in Math and Physics.

Reporter: What’s the best piece of advice that anyone has ever given you that you can share with us?

Many kids help out around the house with chores(家庭杂务) such as emptying the dishwasher, putting laundry away, and taking out the trash. In exchange, some kids get allowances(补贴) or other rewards such as extra computer time.

But some people do not think that kids should get rewards for doing chores. Susie Walton, a parenting educator and family coach, believes that by rewarding kids, parents are sending a message that work isn’t worth doing unless you get something in return. "Running any kind of household is a team effort," Susie said. "A home is a living space for everyone in the family. It’s important for kids to see that we all have responsibilities in the house, and that families decide together how they want their home to look, and how they are going to keep it looking like everyone wants it to look."

Other people believe that getting a cash allowance or other rewards motivates kids to do chores, and it also teaches them real world lessons about how we need to work to earn money. There are also new applications that give kids points and digital gifts that can be redeemed(兑取) either online or in the real world. With the ChoreMonster app, kids earn digital points by completing chores that they can turn in for real-life rewards such as extra Xbox time or a trip to the mall. "Our goal is to encourage kids to earn rewards," says Chris Bergman, founder of ChoreMonster. "Kids need positive reinforcement(强化) to help motivate them."

What do you think? Should kids be rewarded for doing chores? Or should kids help out around their homes without getting anything in return?

Write a 200-word response. Send it to tfkasks4you@timeforkids.com. Your response may be published in a future issue of Time For Kids. Please include your grade and contact information of your parent or teacher if you want your response to be published. The deadline for responding is February 18.

A
I was never very neat, while my roommate Kate was extremely organized. Each of her objects had its place, but mine always hid somewhere. She even labeled (贴标签 ) everything. I always, looked for everything. Over time, Kate got neater and I got messier. She would push my dirty clothing over, and I would lay my books on her tidy desk. We both got tired of each other.
War broke out one evening. Kate came into the room. Soon, I heard her screaming, "Take your shoes away! Why under my bed!" Deafened, I saw my shoes flying at me. I jumped to my feet and started yelling. She yelled back louder.
The room was filled with anger. We could not have stayed together for a single minute but for a phone call. Kate answered it. From her end of the conversation, I could tell right away her grandma was seriously ill. When she hung up, she quickly crawled (爬 ) under her covers, sobbing.
Obviously, that was something she should not go through phone. All of a sudden, a warm feeling of sympathy rose up in my heart. Slowly, I collected the pencils, took back the books, made my bed, cleaned the socks and swept the floor, even on her side. I got so into my work that I even didn't noticed Kate had sat up.
She was watching, her tears dried and her expression one of disbelief. Then, she reached out her hands to grasp mine. I looked up into her eyes. She smiled at me. "Thanks."
Kate and I stayed roommates for the rest of the year. We didn't always agree, but we learned the key to living together: giving in, cleaning up and holding on.

A.She couldn't find her books.
B.She heard the author shouting loud.

C
In her outstanding book, “Choose the Happiness Habit”, Pam Golden wrote, “Take the story of two twin brothers for example. One grew up and became an alcoholic (酒鬼), while the other became a successful businessman. When asked why he became an alcoholic, the alcoholic replied, “Because my father was a drunk.” However, the successful businessman's answer was also “Because my father was a drunk.” when asked why he succeeded. The same background. The same upbringing (培养). However, the results were quite different. Why? The reason is that they had different choices. The brothers chose different thoughts which formed the situations they found themselves in at last, so they had different experiences.
There was a time in my life when I thought difficulty was due to “bad luck”. Have you ever heard the saying “When it rains, it pours”? That was my answer when others asked me how things were going on when I was in trouble. So what do you think I got? “RAIN”. More and more “RAIN”. I couldn't understand why bad luck was always with me.
Pam Golden says, “You're either living in the problem or you're living in the solution.” Now, when I'm faced with what I used to think was a negative (消极的) situation, I use a different way to think about it. I force myself to replace those negative thoughts that make me lose heart in my mind with positive thoughts which encourage me to fight against the difficulty bravely. Sometimes I write down some ideas that may be a solution, which I combine with the lessons I have learned from the bad situations and the difficulties that troubled me in the past, and often, I find a solution to the problem soon. It seems that I should thank the difficulty I met with. The RAIN that poured in my world has become great experiences that provide me with valuable experience, from which I can benefit.
Now, it doesn't “rain” as much in my life as it used to. In fact, most days are beautiful, cloudless and sunny! Sometimes I do get a rain, but I think it makes me stronger just like the rain helps plants grow up.
(1)The example of the twin brothers shows that ________.
A.making good choices is the most important
B.education decides a person's future
C.upbringing makes a big difference
D.it is luck that leads to success
(2)What does “RAIN” mentioned in the second paragraph refer to?
A.Water.
B.Good luck.
C.Success.
D.Difficulty.
(3)What is talked about in the third paragraph?
A.How the author collects useful experience.
B.How the author deals with difficulty now.
C.How the author gets help from others.
D.How the author lives in the problem.
(4)Which of the following agrees with the author's attitude now in the text?
A.All things are difficult before they are easy.
B.Meeting with difficulty is not a bad thing.
C.Misfortunes tell us what fortune is.
D.Things at the worst will mend.

A
Teens don't want to be seen with their parents, much less talk to them or do anything with them. That's what we hear all the time. I don't believe it. Oh, sure, when my daughter and my son were in their teens, they wanted to spend most of their free time with their friends. But there were always those special times planned when we enjoyed being alone with each other, when we connected deeply, and when we were reminded again how much we loved one another.
I recall how delighted my 14-year-old daughter, Alisa, felt when I asked her for a date to see a movie. It was a bittersweet Italian movie, Cinema Paradiso, and I wanted this story to give her a sense of how I grew up as an Italian boy in a small town, where life was simple and where everyone knew one another. I wanted her to know how her father had been brought up and shaped.
We both laughed and cried during the same scenes in the movie. She was attached to the movie. I decided we should complete our evening with some lively conversation at a nearby bakery. I told her the movie was now so much more special for me because I had shared it with her. She smiled. She understood. We made a memory that night.
From our living room window, I saw my 13-year-old son, Jason, tearfully searching our vegetable garden for a place to bury his pet boa constrictor (蟒蛇). Because my son had suffered from asthma (哮喘) and allergies, he could never have a dog, a faithful friend that he wanted so much. Every pet he owned—lizards, fish, or snakes—had died.
I was at his side as we searched for the best gravesite (墓地). We dug the grave, said our goodbyes and then he cried. He cried hard and he asked me why every pet he had owned died so soon. I could feel his heart break against my chest. I just held him close. He let me hold his aching soul. He needed me while he was confused. Share your heart with your teens. Show them repeatedly that you know and love who they really are. There are tender memories waiting to be made.

A.Disliked
B.Loved
C.Missed
D.Complained of
(4)It can be inferred that________.
A.at some moments, children want to be with parents
B.the author's children cannot take care of themselves
C.it is hard for parents to know the inside of their children

(5)From the last paragraph we know that________.
A.setting a good example to children is important
B.the author advises people to make memories with their teens
