The teenage year from 13 to 19 were the most difficult time for me. They were also the best and worse years in my life. At the first, I thought I knew everything but could make decisions by myself. Besides, my parents didn¡¯t seem to think so. They always tell me what to do and how to do it. At one time, I even felt my parents couldn¡¯t understand me so I hoped I could be freely from them. I showed them I was independent by wear strange clothes. Now I am leaving home for college. At last, I will be on their own, but I still want to have my parents to turn whenever I need help.

That cold January night,I was growing sick of my life in San Francisco. There I was, walking home at one in the morning after a tiring practice at the theatre. With the opening night only a week away,I was still learning my lines.I was having trouble dealing with my part-time job at the bank and my acting at night at the same time.As I walked,I thought seriously about giving up both acting and San Francisco.City life had become too much for me.
As I walked down empty streets under tall buildings,I felt very small and cold.I began running, both to keep warm and to keep away from any possible robbers.Very few people were still out except a few sad-looking homeless people under blankets.
About a block from my apartment,I heard a sound behind me.I turned quickly, half expecting to see someone with a knife or a gun.The street was empty. All I saw was a shining streetlight.Still, the noise had made me nervous,so I started to run faster. Not until I reached my apartment building and unlocked the door did I realize what the noise had been.It had been my wallet falling to the sidewalk.
Suddenly I wasn¡¯t cold or tired anymore.I ran out of the door and back to where I¡¯d heard the noise.Although I searched the sidewalk anxiously for fifteen minutes,my wallet was nowhere to be found.
Just as I was about to give up the search,I heard the garbage truck pull up to the sidewalk next to me.When a voice called from the inside,"Alisa Camacho"I thought I was dreaming. How could this man know my name? The door opened, and out jumped a small red-haired man with an amused look in his eye."Is this what you¡¯re looking for" he asked, holding up a small square shape.
It was nearly 3 a.m. by the time I got into bed.I wouldn¡¯t get much sleep that night, but I had gotten my wallet back.I also had gotten back some enjoyment of city life.I realized that the city couldn¡¯t be a bad place as long as people were willing to help each other.

The Square
Jack Dorsey, the co-inventor of Twitter, is promoting his latest invention called the Square. The square is a small plug-in attachment to your mobile phone that allows you to receive credit card payments.
The idea starting from Dorsey's friend Jim McKelvey who was unable to sell some glass work to a customer because he couldn't accept a particular card being used.
Accepting credit card payments for something you're selling isn't always easy, especially if you are mobile like a tradesman, or delivery service at a trade show.
This latest invention uses a small scanner that plugs into the audio input item on a mobile device. It reads information on a credit card when it is swiped(Ë¢¿¨). The information is not stored on the device but sent over secure channels to banks. It basically makes any mobile phone a cash register for accepting card payments.
As a payer, you receive a receipt via email that can be instantly accessed securely online. You can also use a text message to authorize payment in real time. Retailers can create a payer account for their customers which speeds the payment process. For example, a cardholder can assign a photo to their card so their photo will appear on the phone for visual identity confirmation. Mobile devices with touch screens will also allow you to sign for goods.
There are no contracts, monthly fees, or hidden costs to accept card payments using Square and it is expected the plug-in attachment will also be free of charge.
As with Twitter, it's expected that Dorsey will direct the company based upon feedback from users. Square Inc. has offices in San Francisco, Saint Louis and New York and is currently beta testing the invention with retailers in the United States.
1.Why is Jack Dorsey promoting his latest invention?
A. To test a plug-in attachment.
B. To identify a particular credit card.
C. To sell some glass work to a customer.
D. To allow people to receive credit card payments.
2.What can we infer from Paragraph 4?
A. The service performs only on special mobile phones.
B. The latest invention is just a small scanner.
C. The Square contains information on a credit card.
D. It is safe for your information to be sent to banks.
3.How can a cardholder receive a receipt?
A. By email online.
B. By oral message.
C. By a payer account.
D. Over safe channels to banks.
4.What does the writer imply in the last paragraph?
A. The invention may be used in the future.
B. The Square has already put into use widely.
C. The invention hasn¡¯t been tested these days.
D. The Square is popular among people in the US.

It is said that if you want to stay young, sit down and have a good think. This is the research finding of a team of Japanese doctors, who say that most of our brains are not getting enough exercise ¡ª and as a result, we are growing old unnecessarily soon.
Professor Taiju Matsuzawa wanted to find out why otherwise healthy farmers in northern Japan appeared to be losing their ability to think and reason at a relatively early age, and how the process of aging could be slowed down. With a team of colleagues at Tokyo National University, he set about measuring brain volumes of a thousand people of different ages and varying occupations. Computer technology enabled the researchers to obtain precise measurements of the volume of the front and side parts of the brain, which controls functions like eating and breathing, does not contract with age, and one can continue living without intellectual on economical faculties. Contraction of front and side parts ¡ª as cells die off ¡ª was observed in some subjects in their thirties, but it was still not evident in some sixty-and seventy-year-olds. Matsuzawa concluded from his tests that there is a simple way to the contraction normally connected with age ¡ª using the head.
The findings show in general terms that contraction of the brain begins sooner in people in the country than in the town. Those least at risk, says Matsuzawa, are lawyers, followed by university professors and doctors. White collar workers doing routine work in government offices are, however, as likely to have shrinking (ήËõ) brains as the farm worker, bus driver and shop assistant.
Matsuzawa's findings show that thinking can prevent the brain from shrinking. Blood must circulate properly in the head to supply the fresh oxygen the brain cells need. ¡°The best way to maintain, good blood circulation is through using the brain.¡± he says. ¡°Think hard and engage in conversation. Don¡¯t rely on pocket calculators.¡±

3.The doctors¡¯ tests show that _______.
A. our brains shrink as we grow older
B. the front section of the brain does not shrink
C. sixty-year-olds have better brains than thirty-year-olds
D. some people's brains have contracted more than other people's

Over the last week,a "poisonous kale£¨¸ÊÀ¶²Ë£©" theory has been going widespread after an article warned that the vegetable was associated with a variety of medical conditions. It's time to separate fear from fact on the health benefits of kale.
As a member of the cabbage family, kale is low in calories and rich in nutrients and minerals, especially vitamin A,C and K.Consumed for thousands of years,it's been a health plus for millions of eaters throughout the world.
However, numerous web articles have reported on some evidence offered by a medicine researcher. The researcher found that thallium£¨î裩was detected in a few people who were heavy consumers of kale.Thallium is a heavy metal often found in trace amounts£¨Î¢Á¿£©in soil and minerals. His conclusion was that these medical conditions were connected to the impact that trace amounts of thallium detected in some kale samples had on the body.
I don't think the conclusion is based on a strict scientific basis. It's essential to point out that the original report was in a web magazine, not a scientific journal which is subject to peer review by other scientists.A scientific review includes a careful evaluation of how the findings and conclusions were made.Certain factors are critical before an evidence-based conclusion can be made, such as: how many people were in a study;how well controlled were other factors;how much kale was consumed and for how long;how much thallium was in the kale.
It is a fact that kale and other vegetables can absorb thallium from the soil. But the ability for a plant to absorb traces of a chemical does not automatically make it harmful to your health. And even finding measurable amounts of thallium in someone's body doesn't imply that the thallium is causing an ill health effect, according to the CDC.
But we can still learn a lesson from this.Plants grow in soil.Growers must continue to be careful in monitoring the quality of their soil. And what about consumers?Eat your kale¡ªand include lots of other colorful fruits and vegetables. As with all things in nature, variety is key for good health.
1.What do you know about kale?
A. It is high in fat. B. It is low in calories.
C. It is poor m nutrients. D. It is rich in protein.
2.The medicine researcher made a conclusion that .
A. these medical conditions were related to thallium
B. trace amounts of thallium had little effect on the body
C. thallium was found in trace amounts in the minerals
D. kale had a lot of health benefits on human bodies
3.According to the writer,the original report m a web magazine is .
A. scientific B. essential
C. unreliable D. popular
4.The writer thinks that kale is .
A. safe to consume B. poisonous to eat
C. hard to conserve D. terrible to smell
