2.Testing new drugs for safety and effectiveness is a costly process in the United States.It also can take a lot of time.Some scientists are now designing silicon computer chips that act like human organs.The scientists think they have found a way to make the process faster and more economical.
The silicon chips are smaller than a child's hand.Each one has living cells that act and react like a human organ.The chips are being created as part of a program to test the safety of drug compounds.It is called the Tissue Chip for Drug Screening Program.It is a project of the US National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences,or NCATS.Danilo Tagle is the center's Associate Director.He says a three-dimensional computer chip can be designed to act like a human lung.He describes how such a device would operate.
Some computer chips contain very small models of the human digestive system. They copy the real function or duties of the human stomach and intestine,moving when breaking down food.Drugs are added to the tiny organs for testing through instruments known as micro-tubes.Experiments with the tissue chips have produced more detailed information than tests using animal or cell models.
Researchers at Columbia University are working on a project that would combine models of the heart,liver and circulatory system.The scientists hope to test how well some drugs work on diseases of the heart and liver.At Harvard University,researchers are developing a tissue chip modeled on the heart and lungs.
Researchers say they can safely test the effects of a drug on different organ systems.They can use the tissue chips to observe a drug's effect on the organ or organs it is designed to target.
12.What can we learn about the silicon chips?A
A.They have living cells acting like a human organ.
B.They can replace the bad organ of human.
C.They can find diseases of a human organ.
D.They can examine a human organ.

1.Many Chinese immigrants began crossing the Pacific to arrive in the United States in the mid-1800s.By that time,China's population had reached about 430million,and the country was suffering from severe unemployment,poverty,and famine(饥荒).The 1848discovery of gold in California began to tempt Chinese immigrants to the United States.Then,in 1850,the Taiping Rebellion broke out in their homeland.This rebellion against the Chinese government took some 20million lives and caused such suffering that thousands of Chinese left for the United States.In the early 1860s,as the Central Pacific Railroad began construction of its portion of the transcontinental railroad,the demand for railroad workers further increased Chinese immigration.
Chinese immigrants mainly settled in western cities,where they often worked as laborers or servants or in skilled trades.Others worked as merchants.Because native-born Americans kept them out of many businesses,some Chinese immigrants opened their own.
Another group of Asians,the Japanese,also immigrated to the United States.Until 1900,however,their numbers remained small.Between 1900and 1908,large numbers of Japanese migrated to the United States as Japan began building both an industrial economy and an empire.Both developments interrupted the economy of Japan and caused hardships for its people,thus stimulating emigration.
Until 1910 Asian immigrants arriving in San Francisco first stopped at a two-story shelter at the wharf (码头).As many as 500people at a time were often squeezed into this structure,which Chinese immigrants from Canton called muk uk,or"wooden house."In January 1910,California opened a few barracks on Angel Island to accommodate the Asian immigrants.Most of the immigrants were young males in their teens or twenties,who nervously awaited the results of their immigration hearings in dormitories packed with double or triple tiers of bunks.This unpleasant delay could last for months.On the walls of the detention barracks,the immigrants wrote anonymous poems in pencil or ink.Some even carved their verse into the wood.

41.Which of the following statements is NOT the reason of Chinese immigration to AmericaA?
A.The population explosion led to severe unemployment,poverty,and famine.
B.The discovery of gold in the United States was a great temptation to Chinese immigrants.
C.The great suffering caused by Taiping Rebellion forced many people leave China.
D.The United States needed great man power to complete its railroad construction.
42.When Chinese immigrants got to America,they usually took the following jobs exceptC?

5.Outside our hotel in Ho Chi Ming City,Vietnam,a seemingly ancient woman waited beside the door with her hand outstretched (张开的).Every day I put my hand in hers as our eyes met.She never failed to return my smile,my grasp, and my greeting.
On the last day of our visit,I found myself alone on a busy corner across the street from our hotel.Bicycles and motorbikes rushed in front of me.As I hesitated on the sidewalk,I felt a hand on my elbow and looked down to see the smile of my small beggar friend looking up at me.She nodded her head toward the street, indicating that she would take me across.Together,we moved slowly into the chaos.
Then we moved on toward the sidewalk, where she pulled my face down to hers, kissed me on both cheeks, and then left, still smiling and waving back to me.
Traveling in poorer nations,I have witnessed a variety of ways to deal with beggars. The most common response of tourists faced with the poverty-stricken is to ignore them and focus their eyes elsewhere.I have seen people push away an outstretched hand in angry annoyance.A few may drop a few coins into the hand in a hurry, hoping that other ragged pursuers won't immediately appear on the scene.
For many reasons, giving money is not the best response to an outstretched hand. Many world travelers have discovered that the greatest gift they can give is their time and respect.Everyone needs recognition,to be seen as worthy of being known,to feel appreciated and loved. And I believe that everyone is worthy and worth knowing.
