My First Visit to China
As a famous British professor, I was invited to visit China and give lectures there at the end of October in 2000. During my visit, I was warmly welcomed everywhere. During that period, I gave lectures, visited several middle schools and universities, and visited the Great Wall, the Summer Palace and some other places of interest.
After returning to Britain, I will tell my friends and my family that China is a country with the largest population in the world, and that she has achieved great progress. The ¡°open-to-the-word¡± policy has done much good to ChinA.
I hope I will be given a chance to visit China for the second time.

Years ago in Scotland Clark and his wife worked and saved, making plans for their family to travel to the United States. Finally they had saved enough money and gotten passports. The entire family were filled with excitement. However, before their departure, the youngest son was bitten by a dog. The doctor sewed up£¨·ìºÏ£© the boy but hung a yellow sheet on the Clarks¡¯ front door. Because of the possibility of rabies(¿ñÈ®²¡), they were separated for fourteen days.
The family¡¯s dream was dashed(ÆÆÃð). They would not be able to make the trip to America as they planned. The father, filled with disappointment and anger, wept bitter tears and cursed£¨ÖäÂboth his son and God for their misfortune.
Five days later, the tragic(±¯¾çµÄ£¬±¯²ÒµÄ) news spread throughout Britain ¡ª Titanic, which was on her maiden(Ê״εÄ) voyage on April 14,1912, had sunk, taking hundreds of lives with it. The Clark family should have been on that ship, but because the son had been bitten by a dog, they were left behind.
When Mr. Clark heard the news, he hugged his son and thanked him for saving the family. He thanked God for turning what he had felt was a tragedy(±¯¾ç£¬²Ò¾ç) into a blessing(´Í¸££¬ÐÒÊÂ).

A) Suppose you are Sally. You borrowed from Sophie a travel guide-book which you are now returning. Please write a thankful letter of about 80 words, in addition to those given. Use your imagination in creating details.
Dear Sophie,
Thank you for the guide-book you lent me six months ago. With the help of this book I was able to visit many places.
Yours,
Sally

The use of advertisement is certainly great both to the producer and the consumer. There is a great deal of truth in the saying that good quality and honest workmanship are best advertisement. Of course, people know that the manufacturers would have done better if they have used the money for advertising in making better products to sell. But in these days of far-extended trade, there is no doubt that advertisement is necessary to make the existence of even first-class goods known. And even goods that are already well known must still be advertised. Some manufacturers are aware of the value of it, for, when they try to save money by stopping their advertisements, their sales go down at once.
But advertising has its abuses. Many advertisements are meant to cheat, and do at times cheat the public by raising the price of worthless goods. There is only one comfort in this aspect that a lying advertisement cannot sell worthless goods for long, for the people who buy it will not buy it a second time. As an old saying goes, ¡°You can take in all people part of time; and you can take in some people all the time; but you cannot take in all the people all the time.
