    But on this particular evening no one joined me at the stop； it seemed that everyone had suddenly decided not to travel by bus．Of course I heard plenty of buses pass，or I thought I did．But because I had given up stopping them for fear of making a fool of myself，I let them all go by．I stood there alone for half an hour without stopping one．Then I gave up．I decided to walk on to the next stop．

    6．The future of written English will owe more to Hollywood films than Dickens or Shakespeare，if the findings of a study into children's writing are anything to go by．Researchers who looked at the entries to a national competition found they were increasingly using American words such as garbage，trash can，sidewalk，candy，sneakers，soda，and flashlight．
    The stories，written by pupils aged 7to 13，show how fairy cakes are referred to as cupcakes and a dinner jacket has become a tuxedo．"Smart"is now often used for"clever"and"cranky"for"irritable"．
    Television also has a powerful influence on children's work，with Lady Gaga and Argentinean footballer Lionel Messi among the famous names from TV cropping up repeatedly．
    But pupils are let down by basic spelling，punctuation and grammar，according to the study by Oxford University Press （OUP），which looked at the entries to BBC Radio Two's"500Words"competition．
    Children struggled to correctly spell simple words such as"does"and"clothes"and often failed to use the past tense correctly，frequently writing"rised"instead of"rose"or"thinked"instead of"thought"．
    Researchers also found that punctuation was underused，especially semi-colons and speech marks．Some did not know how to use capital letters．However，exclamation marks were overused．Researchers found 35，171examples in total，with some young writers using five at a time！
    Popular US fiction such as the Twilight novels and films is thought to be fueling the increasing use of American vocabulary and spelling．Meanwhile，fears that texting was corrupting children's written work were  unfounded，they said，with youngsters only using text language when they were referring to a text message．
    Samantha Armstrong from OUP said："Perhaps we are catching a glimpse of the language of the future．"Chris Evans，whose radio show runs the competition，said the results were"fascinating"，adding："Who'd have thought that Messi and Gaga would be some of the most used names？"

    13．I've often wondered if I might do more good as a travel agent rather than as a psychologist．It seems that I have been more dramatically affected by certain kinds of travel experiences than I ever have．
    My trip to Iceland is a fine example of that．The plan was to spend two days in a remote mountain hut in Iceland．I was working on a photographic book about winter in Iceland and needed to capture images of this amazing region of high mountain peaks，smoky volcanoes，and lakes with floating icebergs．
    The moment after we arrived，the weather turned extreme making visibility impossible．It snowed so much and the wind blew so hard that we couldn't leave the tiny hut．To stay warm，we walked around in circles much of the day inside the tiny hut．We tried to call for help but the radio did not work．Day after day，we watched our supplies of food and fuel grow dangerously short．We got acute cabin fever （幽居病） and started going for walks and ski expeditions outside．Even when the weather finally broke，nobody came to get us even though it was three days beyond our scheduled pickup．By the time the rescue team came to pull us out，we had all given up hope．
    From then on，the world looks different to me，as does my life．It would have taken me years of psychotherapy to get to the same point．
    Almost everyone has a story to tell，and interestingly，most of these experiences were not altogether pleasant at the time．In fact，it appears that the most constructive life-changing journeys were those that involved some sorts of awful and uncomfortable events that forced the person to develop new resources，increase confidence，and solve problems in new ways．
