14.The"melting pot"in American cuisine(菜肴.烹饪法) is a myth,not terribly unlike the idea of a melting pot of American culture,notes chef Dan Barber."Most cultures don't think about their cuisine in such monolithic(统一的) terms,"he says."French,Mexican,Chinese,and Italian cuisines each consist of dozens of distinct regional foods.And I think‘American'cuisine is moving in the same direction,becoming more localized,not globalized."
American cuisine is shaped by the natural wealth of the country.Having never faced agricultural hardship,Americans don't have to rely on rotating crops,such as the Japanese,whose food culture now showcases buckwheat (荞麦) alongside rice,or the Indians,or the French and Italians,who feature beans alongside wheat."That kind of negotiation with the land forced people to incorporate(接受) those crops in to the culture,"says Barber.And so eating soba noodles becomes part of what it means to be Japanese,and eating beans becomes part of what it means to be French.
So if what we eat is what we are,what are Americans?Well,meat."If Americans have any unifying food identity,I would say we are a mostly white meat culture,"says Barber."The protein-centric dinner plate,whether you're talking about a boneless chicken breast,or a 16-ounce steak,as an everyday expectation is something that America really created,and now exports to the rest of the world."
Every single culture and religion uses food as part of their celebrations,says Ellen Gustafson,co-founder of the FEED Project and The 30Project,which aims to deal with both hunger and overweight issues globally."The celebratory nature of food is universal.Every season,every harvest,and every holiday has its own food,and this is true in America as well.It helps define us."

11.Being Left-handed in a Right-handed World
The world is designed for right-handed people,but why does a tenth of the population prefer the left?(71)D
The answer to it remains a bit of a mystery.Since scientists have noticed that left-handedness tends to run in families,it's assumed that left-handedness has a genetic(基因的) component to it.
(72)A In fact,identical twins,who share the same genes,can sometimes prefer to use different hands.There are also plenty of theories on what else might determine which hand you write with,but many experts believe that it's kind of random.
Historically,the left side and left-handedness have been considered a negative thing by many cultures.(73)CIn some areas, the left hand became known as the"unclean"hand. In many religions, the right hand of God is the favored hand. For example,Jesus sits at God's right side.God's left hand, however,is the hand of judgement.Various activities and experiences become rude or even signs of bad luck when the left hand becomes involved. In some parts of Scotland,it is considered bad luck to meet a left-handed person at the start of a journey.(74)FA person giving directions will put their left hand behind them and even physically try to point with their right hand if necessary. In some Asian countries, eating with the left hand is considered impolite.
(75)G People come to realize that left-handedness is natural.People even noticed that many famous people are left-handed,including Benjamin Franklin,Leonardo Da Vinci,and Charlie Chaplin.Some researchers find out that lefties are more creative and can deal with abstract thinking better.The left-handedness is more easily adaptable to the right-handed world as well.Being left-handed is no longer a sad story now; instead,it is a wonderful gift or maybe it is something you should take pride in.

A.In other words,left-handers are born that way.
B.Left-handedness used to be regarded as a disability.
C.The unfavorable associations of the use of the left hand among cultures are varied.
D.Why do they prefer to use their left hand rather than their right hand for routine activities?
E.Why do some parents force their left-handed children to become right-handed when writing?
F.In Ghana, pointing, gesturing, giving or receiving items with the left hand is considered rude.
G.Fortunately,nowadays most societies and cultures no longer reject left-handedness like before.

1.The longer a teenager spends using electronic devices such as computers and smartphones,the worse their sleep will be,a study of nearly 10,00016-to 19-year-olds suggests.
More than two hours of screen time after school was strongly linked to both delayed and shorter sleep.Almost all the teens from Norway said they used the devices shortly before going to bed.Many said they often got less than five hours sleep a night.
The teens were asked questions about their sleep routine on weekdays and at weekends,as    well as how much screen time they clocked up outside school hours.On average,girls said they    spent around five and a half hours a day watching TV or using computers,smartphones or other    electronic devices.And boys spent slightly more time in front of a screen around six and a half hours a day,on average.Playing computer games was more popular among the boys,whereas girls were more likely to spend their time chatting online!
Any type of screen use during the day and in the hour before bedtime appeared to disturb    sleep-making it more difficult for teenagers to nod off.And the more hours they spent on these devices,the more disturbed their sleep became:When daytime screen use totalled four or more hours,teens had a 49%greater risk of taking longer than an hour to fall asleep.These teens also tended to get less than five hours of sleep per night.
Dr.Hysing said her findings had suggestions for the wider population as so many people  use these devices."We know that sufficient sleep is essential for good physical and mental health.Logging off may be one important step toward securing a good night's sleep."
Prof Rnssell Foster,an expert the University of Oxford,said,"This is an important study  as it provides practical evidence that the use of electronic devices before bed does indeed reduce sleep duration."He said teenagers should be warned of this.
28.What is stressed in the first two paragraphsB?
A.Teens now tend to have more problems with studies.
B.Teens get harder to fall asleep with more screen time.
C.Teens addicted to screen are likely to be more energetic.
D.Teens'sleep duration has nothing to do with their screen time.
29.By asking questions,the study findsC.
A.boys are more likely to chat online than girls
B.girls are more frequent on the screen than boys
C.teens are attracted by different electronic devices
D.teens use the screen for the same purpose
