One day,I noticed the most beautiful Cadillac pull in the lot while waiting for my husband.A pretty female driver pulled into the spot beside our car. There was a striking resemblance to Liz Taylor. Her eyes were as blue as the sea,and teeth like an even row of pearls.A few minutes 1ater,a nice looking man entered her car, leaned over and kissed her and she drove away.

Sitting there,I wanted to cry.How could some people have it all?

Then it became almost routine to see her about once a week. She seemed friendly and always waved, flashing a big smile. My envy continued to exist long after she drove away.

A couple of weeks later, sitting in our usual parking lot,I was holding a book, watching her over the top of it.Her husband came to the car, took her arm and helped her out of the car.I could see very well as she moved to get out.She unsteadily walked around to the passenger side very slowly, leaning on a walking cane.Sitting sideways.she lifted one leg with her hands and then the other. The beautiful lady had a prosthesis(假肢) on the left Ieg and a brace(支持物) on the right leg.

I couldn’t watch them drive away as the tears were blinding me.Through my tears,I told my husband about the beautiful lady.He said he knew her husband and the story. The lady and her parents were in a car that got caught on the railroad tracks and was hit by a train. Both parents were killed and she was severely injured. She was only 12 years old.The railroad made a large settlement with her because the crossing had no signals. He explained her car was specially built for her needs as well as the home.

I prayed for forgiveness all the way home. The lady I thought had everything I didn’t.I realized how lucky I was to have my parents, the ability to walk, run or dance through life and many wonderful things money can’t buy.I would not have traded places with the beautiful lady for anything.

When you meet a person who seems to be much better off than you, don’t be fooled.

Thanksgiving Day is special holiday in the United States and Canada.Families and friends gather to eat and give thanks for their blessing.

Thanksgiving Day is really a harvest festival. This is why it is celebrated in late fall, after the crops are in.But one of the first thanksgivings in America had nothing to do with a good harvest. On December 4, 1619, the Pilgrims (清教徒) from England landed near what is now Charles City, Virginia. They knelt down and thanked God for their safe journey across the Atlantic.

The first New England Thanksgiving did celebrate a rich harvest. The Pilgrims landed at what is now Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1620.They had a difficult time and the first winter was cruel. Many of the Pilgrims died. But the next year, they had a good harvest. So Governor Bradford declared a three-day feast. The Pilgrims invited Indian friends to join them for their special feast.Everyone brought food.

In time, other colonies(殖民地)began to celebrate a day of thanksgiving. But it took years before there was a national Thanksgiving Day.During the Civil War, Sarah Josepha Hale persuaded Abraham Lincoln to do something about it.He proclaimed(宣布)the last Thursday of November 1863 as a day of thanksgiving.Today, Americans celebrate this happy harvest festival on the fourth Thursday in November.Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving Day in much the same way as their American neighbours. But the Canadian thanks-giving Day falls on the second Monday in October.

Tea drinking was common in China for nearly one thousand years before anyone in Europe had ever heard about tea.People in Britain were much slower in finding out what tea was like, mainly because tea was very expensive. It could not be bought in shops and even those people who could afford to have it sent from Holland did so only because it was a fashionable curiosity. Some of them were not sure how to use it.They thought it was a vegetable and tried cooking the leaves. Then they served them mixed with butter and salt. They soon discovered their mistake but many people used to spread the used tea leaves on bread and give them to their children as sandwiches.

Tea remained scarce and very expensive in England until the ships of the East India Company began to bring it direct from China early in the seventeenth century.During the next few years so much tea came into the country that the price fell and many people could afford to buy it.

At the same time people on the Continent were becoming more and more fond of tea.Until then tea had been drunk without milk in it, but one day a famous French lady named Madame de Sevigne decided to see what tea tasted like when milk was added. She found it so pleasant that she would never again drink it without milk.Because she was such a great lady that her friends thought they must copy everything she did, they also drank their tea with milk in it.Slowly this habit spread until it reached England and today only very few Britons drink tea without milk.

At first, tea was usually drunk after dinner in the evening. No one ever thought of drinking tea in the afternoon until a duchess(公爵夫人)found that a cup of tea and a piece of cake at three or four o’clock stopped her getting “a sinking feeling” as she called it.She invited her friends to have this new meal with her and so, tea-time was born .

B.it tasted more pleasant

C.it became a popular drink

B.the ancient Chinese

C.the upper(上层的) social class

D.people in Holland

The morning had been a disaster. My tooth was aching. And I’d been in an argument with a friend. Her words still hurt: “The trouble with you is that you won’t put yourself in my place. Can’t you see things from my point of view?” I shook my head stubbornly—and felt the ache in my tooth.I’d thought I could hold out till my dentist came back from holiday, but the pain was really unbearable.I started calling the dentists in the phone book, but no one could see me immediately. Finally,at about lunchtime,I got lucky.

“If you come by right now,” the receptionist said,“the dentist will fit you in.”

I took my puree and keys and rushed to my car.But suddenly I began to doubt about the dentist. What kind of dentist would be so eager to treat someone at such short notice? Why wasn't he as busy as the others?

In the dentist's office,I sat down and looked around.I saw nothing but the bare walls and I became even more worried. The assistant noticed my nervousness and placed her warm hand over my ice-cold one.

When I told her my fears, she laughed and said,"Don't worry. The dentist is very good."

"How long do I have to wait for him?" I asked impatiently.

"Come on,he is coming.Just lie down and relax. And enjoy the artwork," the assistant said.

"The artwork?" I was puzzled.

The chair went back.Suddenly I smiled. There was a beautiful picture, right where I could enjoy it: on the ceiling. How considerate the dentist was! At that moment,I began to understand what my friend meant by her words.

What a relief!

3.Why did the author suddenly smile?

A.Because the dentist came at last.

I had worried myself sick over Simon’s mother coming to see me. I was a new teacher, and I gave an honest account of the students’ work. In Simon’s case, the grades were awfully low. He couldn’t read his own handwriting. But he was a bright student. He discussed adult subjects with nearly adult comprehension. His work in no way reflected his abilities.

So when Simon’s mother entered the room, my palms (手掌心) were sweating. I was completely unprepared for her kisses on both my cheeks. “I came to thank you,” she said, surprising me beyond speech. Because of me, Simon had become a different person. He talked of how he loved me, he had begun to make friends, and for the first time in his twelve years, he had recently spent an afternoon at a friend’s house. She wanted to tell me how grateful she was for the self-respect I had developed in her son. She kissed me again and left.

I sat, stunned, for about half an hour, wondering what had just happened. How did I make such a life changing difference to that boy without even knowing it?What I finally came to remember was one day, several months before, when some students were giving reports in the front of the class, Jeanne spoke quietly, and to encourage her to raise her voice, I had said, “Speak up. Simon’s the expert on this. He is the only one you have to convince, and he can’t hear you in the back of the room.” That was it. From that day on, Simon had sat up straighter, paid more attention, smiled more, and became happy. And it was all because he happened to be the last kid in the last row. The boy who most needed praise was the one who took the last seat that day.

It taught me the most valuable lesson over the years of my teaching career, and I’m thankful that it came early and positively. A small kindness can indeed make a difference.

1.We can infer that when Simon’s mother entered the room, the writer felt ______.

A. satisfied B. nervous C. happy D. surprised

2. The following words can be used to describe Simon before he met the writer except ______.

A. unconfident B. lonely C. outgoing D. clever

3.What the teacher said in paragraph 3 is intended to ______.

A. encourage Jeanne to speak louder

B. encourage Simon to work hard

C. ask Jeanne to convince Simon

D. tell the students that Simon was expert on that

4.The purpose of the passage is to ______.

A. tell the story of Simon

B. tell teachers how to be kind to students

C. advise the readers to be kind to others

D. share a valuable lesson with readers
