    Strong storms and high winds sometimes bring floods to coastal areas．But cities and towns along the US East Coast are flooding even in calm and sunny weather．Among them is Maryland's capital Annapolis．Tourists there must sometimes walk through water flooding downtown streets surrounding the habor．Sometimes water covers roads in Atlantic City，N．J．Even the yards and basements of coastal homes near New York City sometimes flood．

    Sea levels have climbed，on average，about 20centimeters（8inches） over the past 135years．And a sharp increase in tide flooding is one of the more visible impacts affecting many coastal areas，notes William Sweet，an oceanographer．
    Sweet and his co-workers recently analyzed data from 45tide gauges（计量表） along the US coasts．These tools record the changing heights of tides as they rise and fall．From these data，Sweet's team calculated the number of"troublesome floods"in various coastal cities．These floods，Sweet explains，typically occur when water level is about 30centimeters（1foot） above the historic level of the highest tides．In June 2014，the team reported finding a growing rise in these flooding events．
    In Charleston，S．C，from 1957to 1963，the city experienced troublesome floods an average of 4.6days per year．Bur from 2007 to 2013，the occurring rate of troublesome floods jumped five times．Annapolis city was even more serious．From 1957to 1963，troublesome floods were roughly 3.8days per year．From 2007to 2013，the average was 10times higher---39.3days a year．
    "Over the next few decades，climate change probably drives sea levels even higher，"Sweet says．"So today's flooding problems promise to become only more widespread and frequent．"

    2．In eighteen seventy-seven，the American government decided to move the Nez Perce Indians from their land．The government had set up a reservation for them in Idaho．Chief Joseph did not want to leave the land．It was holy ground．It contained the bones of his father and mother．
    But，like his father in earlier times，Chief Joseph knew it would be hopeless to stay and defend the land．There were too few Indians to win a war against the white men．
    And so in June of eighteen seventy-seven，the Nez Perce left their home in the Wallowa Valley．They left quickly．They were able to take only a small part of what they owned，and just a few cattle and Appaloosa horses．
    When the Indians reached the Snake River，the water was very deep and ran very fast with melted snow from the mountains．Chief Joseph and his people made boats from sticks and dried animal skins to cross the river．While the Indians were busy，a group of white men came and stole some of the cattle waiting at the edge of the river．
    The other chiefs demanded that Joseph call a meeting．Two of the chiefs，White Bird and Toohoolhoolzote，spoke for War，but Joseph held different opinion．
    Some of the young men in White Bird's group were very angry．That night，they rode into the countryside and killed eleven white persons．
    During all his years as chief，Joseph had tried to keep the peace．Now he saw there was no hope．Although he and his young men had taken no part in the killings，he knew that the white men would blame all of the Indians．Chief Joseph said，"I would have given my own life if I could have undone the killing of the white men．"
    Many Nez Perce fled．Chief Joseph remained，because his wife was about to have a baby．After she gave birth，he and his family joined the others in White Bird Canyon to the south．
    Joseph wanted to lead the people to safety in the flat lands of Montana．But the United States army quickly sent horse soldiers to follow them．
    They were extremely tired when they reached White Bird Canyon．An Indian-carrying a white flag-walked forward to meet them．A soldier shot him．
    With that shot，war between the Nez Perce and the United States began．

    17．Tokyo University laboratory has developed a robot that never loses at the game of Rock Paper Scissors．That is because its visual processing abilities and fingers work together faster than any human brain．A video of the undefeated robot has been watched by more than 3million viewers on YouTube since going online at the end of June．
    Tokyo University engineering professor Masatoshi Ishikawa has a good-natured response to frustrated human losers who accuse him of essentially creating a robot that cheats．"It is not cheating．Every one millisecond the image processor decides and recognizes the shape the human hand is going to make．And then the robot can make a winnable shape one millisecond later than a human being．Only one millisecond，but a human cannot see this difference because the human eye is very slow，"explained Ishikawa．
    At the Ishikawa Oku Laboratory there has been amazing progress which shows the near perfect accuracy of robotics．Such as a robot that can catch a falling egg without breaking it，another one that can tie a knot，and a robot that may not be quite ready for the NBA，but is able to dribble （连击） a ball．
    In sports such as baseball and cricket，the misses outnumber （比…多） successes for even the most skilled athletes．That is not so in this award-winning school laboratory．For instance，an intelligent robot is the result of five years of research and a lot of trial and error．And the cost of just one finger on the robot is equal to that of a mini car．
    The technology obviously has uses beyond fun and games．Corporations are eager to take advantage of the lab's technology for industrial and other practical uses．And there is talk of applying it to assist disabled people and improve human capabilities．
