阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

Many of us mistakenly believe that it's wrong to think we have any good qualities. We may spend a lot of time blaming ourselves for our negative qualities, thinking that self criticism is the key to improving our performance. However, a constant focus on our supposed shortcomings can stop our efforts to make friends with other people. How can we believe that others could like us if we believe our inner being is flawed(有缺陷)?

If someone seems to dislike you, the reason for that dislike might have little or nothing to do with you. The person who doesn't like you might be fearful, or shallow, or busy or shy. Perhaps you and that person are simply a mismatch for each other at this particular time.

Don't take yourself out of the game by deciding that your flaws are bigger than your good qualities. In fact, some of the very qualities you consider to be flaws may be irresistible to someone else. For all the factors that might cause one person to reject you, there are at least as many factors that will work in your favor with someone else.

You might be thirty pounds over your ideal weight, but you may have a wonderful laugh and a real enthusiasm for life. There are many people who don’t mind your extra pounds. You may drive a shabby car, but you might be a great dancer and a loyal friend. There are people out there looking for loyalty, or fun, or sweetness, or wisdom, and the package it comes in is not important. If you are worried that you are not beautiful enough to attract friends, keep in mind that not everyone is looking for physical beauty in their friends. You can decide to feel inferior(自卑) because you don't have much money and you don't drive a nice car. You can believe that this is the reason that you don't have many friends in your life. On the other hand, if you are very wealthy you may be suspicious that everyone is after your money and that nobody really likes you as a person.

The point is that you can focus on just about anything and believe it's the reason you do not have friends and cannot make any.

1.According to the author ___________ plays an important role in making friends.

A. admitting your shortcomings B. self criticism

C. modesty D. confidence

2.If you are not liked by a person, _________ .

A. you should find the reason in yourself

B. you’d better talk with the person face to face

C. you may not be the one to be blamed

D. you and that person misunderstand each other

3.We can learn from the third paragraph that ____________ .

A. your good qualities may turn out to be your flaws

B. your weakness may also be your strengths in some way

C. your negative qualities cause a person to reject you

D. you’ll have few friends if your flaws a re bigger than your good qualities

4. Which of the following is true according to the author?

A. It is important to lose weight.

B. It is easier for a wealthy person to make friends.

C. Inner qualities are more important than physical appearance.

D. If you are not beautiful enough, try to improve your physical beauty.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中, 选出最佳选项。

According to the US government, wind farms off the Pacific coast could produce 900 gigawatts of electricity every year.Unfortunately, the water there is far too deep for even the tallest windmills to touch bottom. An experiment under way off the coast of Norway, however, could help put them anywhere.

The project, called Hywind, is the world’s first large-scale deepwater wind turbine (涡轮发电机).Although it uses a fairly standard 152-ton, 2.3-megawatt turbine, Hywind represents totally new technology. The turbine will be fixed 213 feet above the water on a floating spar, a technology Hywind’s creator, the Norwegian company StatoilHydro, has developed recently. The steel spar, which is filled with stones and goes 328 feet below the sea surface, will be tied to the ocean floor by three cables ; these will keep the spar stable and prevent the turbine from moving up and down in the waves.Hywind’s stability in the cold and rough sea would prove that even the deepest corners of the ocean are suitable for wind power. If all goes according to the plan, the turbine will start producing electricity six miles off the coast of southwestern Norway as early as September.

To produce electricity on a large scale, a commercial wind farm will have to use bigger turbines than Hywind does, but it’s difficult enough to balance such a large turbine so high on a floating spar in the middle of the ocean. To make that turbine heavier, the whole spar’s center of gravity must be moved much closer to the ocean’s surface. To do that, the company plans to design a new kind of wind turbine, one whose gearbox (变速箱) sits at sea level rather than behind the blades.

Hywind is a test run, but the benefits for perfecting floating wind-farm technology could be extremely large.Out at sea, the wind is often stronger and steadier than close to shore, where all existing offshore windmills are planted.Deep-sea farms are invisible from land, which helps overcome the windmill-as-eyesore objection. If the technology catches on, it will open up vast areas of the planet’s surface to one of the best low-carbon power sources available.

1.The Hywind project uses totally new technology to ensure the stability of_________.

A.the cables which tie the spar to the ocean floor

B.the spar which is floating in deep-sea water

C.the blades driven by strong and steady sea wind

D.the stones filled in the spar below the sea surface

2.To balance a bigger turbine high on a floating spar, a new type of turbine is to be designed with its gearbox sitting_________.

A.on the sea floor

B.on the spar top

C.at sea level

D.behind the blades

3.Wide applications of deepwater wind power technology can_________.

A.solve the technical problems of deepwater windmills

B.make financial profits by producing more turbines

C.settle the arguments about environmental problems

D.explore low-carbon power resources available at sea

With around 40,000 students, the Politecnico di Milano is the largest and most technical university in Italy, offering undergraduate, graduate and other courses in engineering, architecture and design. Founded in 1863, just two years after Italy was united, Milan Polytechnic is international famous. Many of its graduates now work in big companies abroad like M.I.T., Caltech and Oxbridge.

Yet the Politechnic has a problem. As you know, here in Italy people speak Italian. Beautiful though the language may be, it is not a good choice for engineers when they’re building a way in Norway or designing a bridge in Vietnam. For better or worse, the global tongue of engineers is English. Hoping to attract more international students, the Politechnic decided to run its doctor’s courses in English only. Over 100 teachers went to court to block the plan, referring to a 1933 law that makes Italian the official language. For some teachers, all that matters is that they don’t feel comfortable teaching in English. In 2013, the court said they were right. Teaching English was out.

But there was more to come. They then went on a nationwide campaign against their university’s decision. Unwisely, the defenders of the Italian language backed them, saying, “we note with regret and concern the ignorance and abandonment(放弃) of Italian in the university education.”

The leaders at the Politechnic refused to be frightened, and asked for the ruling. Last month the Council of State said, “Art and science are free, and teaching them is free.” The question is whether teaching in English prevents students acquiring knowledge. But one could put it differently, and ask whether universities should be free to teach in whatever way they think best serves their students.

Interestingly, the people one might expect to be most against English-only teaching, the students themselves, have taken it easy. The president, Giovanni Azzone, told me: “Students write to me about everything from the lack of parking spaces to washrooms that don’t work. Not one has ever complained about the courses in English.”

1.The main idea of the passage is that the Politechnic decision to run its doctor’s courses in English only ________.

A. attracts more international students

B. sends more students to work abroad

C. makes some teachers out of work

D. meets with different responses

2.Which statement is NOT the reason why the Politechnic decided to use only English in class?

A. Many graduates work abroad.

B. Italian is widely used.

C. English is the global language.

D. The Politechnic is an international university.

3.Those who agree with the new change in the Politechnic are ________.

A. the Politechnic leaders B. over 100 teachers

C. the Council of State D. the defenders of Italian

4.The students’ attitude towards English-only teaching in doctor’s courses is _________.

A. indifferent(漠然的) B. disapproving

C. skeptical D. approving

The parents of a troubled teen may feel unsure as to whom to turn to in order to find help for their child. They may feel as if they have exhausted all of their options, and sometimes they are on the verge of giving up. But there is hope. Schools for troubled teens offer discipline and in some cases, drug treatment programs that can provide important life skills, and more importantly, a fresh start.

The following is a list of the most effective types of schools for troubled teens. Not every facility is a match for every child, but by knowing the differences between them, parents can make a better educated decision about where to send their teenager.

Boarding Schools

When a child is unable to deal with the relative freedom of a standard school day, boarding schools might be a good choice. At boarding schools, the child lives in a dorm setting, where almost every minute of the day is scheduled by school administrators.

Treatment Centers

When a teenager has an addiction to drugs or alcohol, a residential center that specializes in young people is an outstanding way to help them break the cycle of addiction. Treatment centers feature individual and group counseling to help identify the root causes of the drug problem and help develop the life skills needed to stay clean when the program is over.

Wilderness Programs

Designed to help improve the discipline and self-reliance of the child, wilderness programs send kids back to nature. By placing them in a foreign and sometimes uncomfortable setting, wilderness programs hope to improve children’s behavior. Programs generally include hikes, exercise programs and team building exercises.

Boot Camps

Boot camps are the most extreme style of school for troubled teens. These facilities are modeled after actual military boot camps, where the individual must get into shape, work as part of a team, and follow a long, hard set of rules and regulations. However, boot camps might not be the best choice for a teen with a drug addiction.

1.Who would be the intended readers of the passage?

A. Teachers. B. Parents.

C. Students. D. Experts.

2.As the author suggests, schools for troubled teens______.

A. can be a good choice for some desperate parents

B. can completely help and change troubled teens

C. are becoming popular with teens in trouble

D. care more about discipline than life skills

3.According to the passage, boarding schools_____.

A. provide children with more freedom

B. have their students’ time managed carefully

C. pay much attention to team building exercises

D. can make children feel safer
