A
When I was a child , I remember that my mother decided that we would take a trip to visit my Aunt Sandy who lived in Mammoth Lakes, California. I was about 7 at the time but my memory does not fail me because I can recall my personal details .
We were sitting in the kitchen getting ready to have peanut butter and suddenly without warning the room started shaking. I remember thinking that it was weird(怪异)that construction workers must have been moving the house or something, but that it was weird that they would do it when we were still in it. I had a vivid imagination too. So everything started shaking and my aunt had this horrible look on her face as she dropped the knife of peanut-butter onto the ground and held on to the counter. My mom told me to get under the table, which as I think back was odd because what was happening was from the ground so what good was getting under a table going to do. The kitchen window soon broke out on its own from the force of all the shaking and I started getting pretty scared(害怕). I don’t think my aunt moved the entire time. My mom had gotten under the table with me and was holding me to make sure I was OK I suppose. It seemed strange because no one really knew what to do.
So finally the shaking stopped. The power was out and it took minutes before anyone really even started to move and talk again. My mother decided that we would leave the next morning. I don’t remember if we were only planning to stay for one night or if we were just stopping by on our way to Fresno where my mom had friends.

My teenage son Karl became withdrawn after his father died. As a single parent, I tried to do my best to talk to him. But the more I tried, the more he pulled away. When his report card arrived during his junior year, it said that he had been absent 95 times from classes and had six falling grades for the year. At this rate he would never graduate. I sent him to the school adviser, and I even begged him. Nothing worked.
One night I felt so powerless that I got down on my knees and pleaded for help. “Please God, I can’t do anything more for my son.  I’m at the end of my rope. I’m giving the whole thing up to you.”
I was at work when I got a phone call. A man introduced himself as the headmaster. “I want to talk to you about Karl’s absences.” Before he could say another word, I choked up and all my disappointment and sadness over Karl came pouring out into the ears of this stranger. “I love my son but I just don’t know what to do. I’ve tried everything to get Karl to go back to school and nothing has worked. It’s out of my hands. “For a moment there was silence on the other end of the line. Karl’s next report card showed a marked improvement in his grades. Finally, he even made the honor roll. In his fourth year, I attended a parent-teacher meeting with Karl. I noticed that his teachers were astonished at the way he had turned himself around. On our way home, he said, “Mum, remember that call from the headmaster last year?” I nodded. “That was me. May 16th               Wednesday                                                  Sunny

They used to call her “the witch(女巫)”, but today I found things were different.

My legs were too short to reach the floor from up there on the big chair. I was so afraid. My legs started to shake.

It was the first time I had been to the principal’s(校长的) office. And I knew what she was going to ask me.

Why had I been running on the concrete(混凝土) in the playground? Why hadn’t I followed the school rules?

The principal’s secretary was sitting at her desk. She kept asking me questions like whether I liked school and what grade I was in. I didn’t want to talk to her, so I just gave one-word answers.

Then she asked what my dad did. But I didn’t really know what he did, so I made something up. “He plays basketball for the Boston Celtics,” I said.

The secretary just looked at me, and said nothing more.

Just then, the door to the principal’s office opened. There she was, the woman that everyone called “the witch”.

Was she really that bad? I was surprised to see her office walls were bright yellow, and there were some nice pictures on the desk.

She told me about the pictures. I was surprised that she had a family and a kid, just like me.

Then she asked how my family was. It turned out that she had known me since I was only a few weeks old. I was happy to hear that. If she knew my mum, then I wouldn’t get into much trouble.

She cleaned the cut on my knee and told me to be more careful. She also told me about the rules of the playground. But she didn’t punish or shout at me. And I forgot all the bad things I had heard about “the witch”. I had met her and I knew she was nice.

III  阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

April 27 is Take Our Daughters to Work Day in Britain. Started at first in the Unite States and brought to Britain in 1994, Take Our Daughters to Work Day has become a special day for girls between 11 and 15. On that day thousands of girls take a day off school and go together with one of their parents to their work places. The purpose of this day is to broaden girls’ horizons and raise their self-confidence.

For many years people have thought that boys can do better than girls in society. But actually, “girls can be whatever they want to be just like boys, whether it is a pilot, a nurse or a chief executive,” says the chairman of the Our Sons and Daughters Charitable Trust, an organization which supported the activity of the Day. “Now the girls have a close look at what their parents are doing and this may help them to be more self-confident when they are faced with a choice of work.”

Schools and many companies support the activity too. Palmers’ Green High School for girls, in north London, has made the day necessary part of careers education.

Zarina Bart, 15, from Palmers’ Green, went with her mother to her Lawyer’s office this year’s Take Our Daughters to Work Day. She found it interesting to see her mother at work. “It’s really strange seeing Mum at work--- running around, getting serious and telling people what to do.” She has always liked this idea of going into law and thinks it likely that she will follow in her mother’s footsteps. Having a chance to see how her mother works has given her more self-confidence.

Experts believe that girls with higher self-confidence aim higher and are more likely to be successful in life. Parents have most important effect on the confidence of teenage girls. If parents believe in their daughters and show examples both at work as well as at home for them, this will give a lot of help to girls. Take Our Daughters to Work Day is surely a step in the right direction.

3.According to the passage, which of the following statements is true?

A.Take Our Daughters to Work Day is British in origin.

B.On Take Our Daughters to Work Day, children are taken to their parents’ work places.

C.Palmers’ Green High School for girls favors Take Our Daughters to Work Day.

D.Parents always show good examples for their children both at work and at home.

4.After her experience on Take Our Daughters to Work Day, Zarina felt __________.

A.confident about her study

B.strange to work in a lawyer’s office

C.sure about what to choose as her future career

D.interested in following in her father’s footsteps

5.The writer’s attitude towards Take Our Daughters to Work Day is __________.
