Background music may seem harmless, but it can have a powerful effect on those who hear it. Recorded background music first found its way into factories, shops and restaurants in the USA. Very soon it spread to other parts of the world. Now it is becoming difficult to go shopping or eat a meal without listening to background music.
To begin with, background music was intended simply to create a soothing (舒适的) atmosphere. Recently, however, it's becoming a big business. An American marketing expert has shown that music can boost(提升) sales or increase factory production by as much as a third.
But it has to be the light music. Lively music has no effect at all on sales. Slow music can increase receipts(收入) by 34%. This is probably because shoppers slow down and have more opportunity to spot items they would like to buy. Yet, slow music isn't always the answer. The expert found that in restaurants slow music meant customers took longer to eat their meals, which reduced overall sales. So restaurant owners might be well advised to play faster music to keep the customers moving-unless, of course, the resulting indigestion(消化不良) leads to complaints.

Interviewing is a skill that can be learned and the key lies in the “three-Ps” of planning, practice and preparation. Here are some tips on making a successful interview.
1. |
Prepare as well as you possibly can, search the web and research the background of the company and the people who you think are going to be interviewing you. Learn exactly what it is they do and exactly how you would fit in with the company. Most importantly try to understand the “culture” of the company. You need to communicate in a way that mirrors their company standards; this will show you can fit in that organization. Understand a little of what their competitors are doing. This will show you’ve bothered to find out where their position in the market is.
2. |
Just as important is your own personal preparation. Think about the key things you want to communicate and why you would be ideal for the job. Think about you can sound enthusiastic, without sounding desperate; how you can sell yourself. If they ask you a question, such as “tell me about your CV”, and you can’t do it fluently, you will find the interviewers will lose interest and you won’t get the job.
3. |
During the interview, be a very good listener and if you can find some common ground with your interviewers, you will have a big advantage over your competitors. The interview is basically an interaction between two people, so how you come across as a person is of upmost importance. As soon as you enter the company building, make sure everyone you meet is left with the impression that you are a pleasant person. Sometimes an interview question might seem very simple but, don’t be deceived, there is always a reason for them asking that question.
4. |
Generally wear a suit and tie, but it does depend on the job you are going for. You should have discovered, when you studied the company culture, what is expected. For media companies, for example, being smart but casual might be the style they want. They are looking for someone who is comfortable with himself or herself. In this case you should dress for who you are.
5. |
It is natural if you are nervous, in fact it is a good sign; it shows you are taking the interview seriously. However try to avoid nervous mannerisms, such as tapping your foot or playing with your hair. Positive body language is important, so adopt a good posture. If you slouch in your chair the interviewer will think you could be sloppy in your work as well. Positivity is essential in all aspects of your interview.

A story from the Bible tells of old Babylon, where the men decided to build a tower that would touch the sky.But God was unhappy, and he made them speak different languages. They couldn’t understand each other, so their dream never came true.
Yet the dream remains alive: if all men speak the same language, they can do anything.L.L.Zamenhof from Poland was among the men who pursue this dream. He developed Esperanto(世界语)between 1877 and 1885.
As the most successful man-made world language, it is spoken by over two million people around the world.Last month, the World Esperanto Congress(大会), dealing with language rights, ended in Sweden. The 2004 conference will be held in Beijing. Most Esperanto speakers are in Central and Eastern Europe and in East Asia, particularly Chinese mainland.
Esperanto has two advantages.First, it’s easy. Each letter has exactly one sound and there are just 16 basic grammar rules. The second advantage is that it belongs to no one country. But Esperanto has only reached a small number of people compared with natural languages widely used around the world-such as English or Chinese. While these languages are deeply connected with their nations and cultures, Esperanto doesn’t have this background.

Barcodes(条形码) aren’t given much thought by the majority of consumers, but these codes were fairly recently applied in a working fashion in 1970.
A small food store owner decided one day that keeping records of the inventory(存货) of his stock and the associated prices were an extremely laborious process, and so, in 1948, he contacted The Drexel Institute of Technology in a bid to work towards a solution. Bernard Sliver rose to the challenge and set out to study the problem and began working on a solution involving an automatic way of keeping track of items that had been sold. Sliver and a group of students from the institute realized their answer in the form of ultraviolet light (紫外线), ink and a scanner.
The system worked initially, but possessed some negatives. It was incredibly costly to carry out on a large scale and the system was also unstable. If the invention was to become commonplace(寻常的事)in grocery stores, these two problems had to be solved.
The patent (专利) for the bar code system was filed by Sliver and one of his students, Woodland. The patent was not granted immediately; in fact, it took three years for the patent agency to grant their invention patent for the barcode, occurring on 7th October, 1952.
Despite the patent being issued, the system was still not welcomed by the majority of store owners. It was not until 1966 that the system began moving its way into more and more grocery stores. This system was soon criticized, as there was no central mechanism for controlling uniformly(统一地)coded items. In 1970, Logicom developed the Universal Grocery Products Identification code( UGOIC), soon shortened to Universal Identification Number (UPC). It was Marsh’s superstore, in Troy, which was the very first store to install this complex barcode reading system, and its popularity has soared(升温) ever since, and is obviously now commonplace in all types of stores worldwide.
1.What is stressed in the second paragraph?
A.The heavy work of store owners.
B.The function of ultraviolet light, ink and a scanner.
C.The origination of barcodes.
D.Bernard Sliver’s education background.
2.Which of the following was NOT a drawback of Sliver’s system?
A.It was expensive to be applied on a large scale.
B.It was a laborious process.
C.The system was not stable.
D.It lacked a central mechanism.
3.The popularity of the barcode rose quickly after .
A.1948 B.1952 C.1966 D.1970
4.What is the purpose of the text?
A.To tell people that failure is the mother of success.
B.To praise scientists’ efforts in making people’s lives easier.
C.To describe shop owners’ opinions of barcodes.
D.To provide information about the development of barcodes.

If there is one thing I’m quite sure about, it is that in a hundred years from now we still be reading newspapers. Not those newspapers are a necessity. Even now some people get most of the news from the television or have the radio switched on in the background or in the car. Many buy a paper only on Saturday or Sunday. But for most people a newspaper has become a habit passed down from generation to generation.
The basic British character won’t change, and one of the characteristics of the British is that we don’t much like talking to each other when we get up. So what better way is there to keep yourself thinking in the morning than to wrap yourself in a newspaper?
Over the past couple of centuries, human beings have developed a close relationship with the newspaper. It has become as natural as breathing or enjoying the sun. And it is not just the British who love newspapers. On suburban trains in Calcutta, for instance, just one person in the whole car will buy a newspaper and read aloud the best bits to his fellow passengers, much to everybody’s enjoyment.
The nature of what is news may change. What essentially (本质上) makes news is what affects our lives and the big political stories, the coverage of the wars, earthquakes and other disasters, will continue much the same. I think there will be more coverage of scientific research, though. It’s already happening in areas that may directly affect our lives, like genetic engineering. In the future I think there will be more coverage of scientific explanations of why we feel as we do, whether it’s love or depression. We develop a better understanding of how the brain operates and what our feelings really are.
It’s quite possible that in the next century newspaper will be transmitted electronically from the national equivalents of Fleet Street (伦敦的舰队街,以报馆集中而著称) and printed out in our own homes. In fact, I’m pretty sure that that is how it will happen in future. You’ll be probably selecting from a menu, making up your own bespoke newspaper by picking out the things you want to read and say. You might even have an intelligent screening device (装置) to do the job for you.
I think people have got it wrong when they talk about the competition between the different media. They actually have a relationship, feeding off each other. It was once predicted that television would kill off newspapers, which hasn’t happened. What is read on the printed page is more enduring (持久的) than pictures on a flickering screen or sound lost in the sky. And as for the Internet, it’s never really satisfying to read something just on a screen.
1.The author of the passage is most probably from _______________.
A. Russia B. India C. Britain D. America
2.According to the passage, the future of newspapers ____________.
A. will be mainly connected with scientific research
B. will report more important political activities
C. will directly cover more on scientific research
D. will build a bridge between different people
3.The underlined part “bespoke newspaper” of the passage probably refers to _____________.
A. a newspaper which dares to report the truth
B. a newspaper edited to one’s own interest
C. a newspaper edited and published for the public
D. a newspaper which only covers the life of family members
4.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. It was centuries ago that newspapers came into being .
B. Televisions have taken the place of newspapers .
C. The Internet will gradually take the place of newspapers.
D. The nature of news may remain the same over generations.
